Use an OBS Profile for stream, video, and output settings; use a Scene Collection for scenes and sources. For one dedicated stream with a stable service and layout, one of each is usually enough. They are complementary settings sets—not a special 24/7 mode or an uptime guarantee.
What does an OBS Profile save?
A Profile saves stream settings, including the connected account, plus Video and Output settings. That makes it the place for configuration such as the streaming service, resolution, and output arrangement. OBS explicitly says Profiles do not store scenes; see the OBS Profiles guide.
What does a Scene Collection save?
A Scene Collection saves scenes and sources, as well as Global Audio Sources configured in Settings → Audio. Sources are the elements used to build a scene, such as audio, browser, image, media, and video capture sources. Collections do not store output settings; see the OBS Scene Collections guide and Sources Guide.
Which one should you use for a 24/7 stream?
For a stream that keeps the same service, video setup, and output configuration, keep one clearly named Profile. Put the always-on presentation—its scenes, media, graphics, and other inputs—in a clearly named Scene Collection. Creating extra Profiles just because a broadcast is continuous does not add an uptime feature.

Save additional configurations when there is a real difference to preserve:
- Another Profile: use one when the service, resolution, or output configuration differs, such as settings for another service or network conditions.
- Another Scene Collection: use one when the presentation differs, such as a separate podcast or game-stream layout, or a recording-only layout without streaming overlays.
The two sets are independent: switching Profiles does not select or save scenes, and switching Scene Collections does not configure output settings.

Check the active setup before going live
- Check the Profile: confirm the intended service or account, video configuration, and output settings.
- Check the Scene Collection: confirm the expected scene is present and selected, sources are correct and visible, and global audio sources are appropriate.
- Test the configuration: OBS recommends double-checking settings and making a test stream or recording before the real session. That recommendation is not a validated 24/7 endurance procedure. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
Moving a Profile or Scene Collection to another computer
OBS documents Profile settings export and import as JSON. Scene Collection import supports OBS Studio collections and migration from certain other broadcast applications. OBS says imported collections created on other operating systems are adjusted for the current OS. After importing, check the result on the destination computer rather than assuming devices, files, plugins, or external services transferred automatically.
