To configure a controller in RPCS3, connect it to your computer, open the Pads or Gamepad Configuration screen, choose the player slot and a handler that matches how your operating system exposes the controller, select the device, test or assign its inputs, and save. For a DualShock 4, use RPCS3’s dedicated handler when available; for an Xbox or compatible pad, use XInput when it appears in your build.
Configure a controller in RPCS3
- Connect or pair the controller with your operating system first.
- In RPCS3, open the Pads or Gamepad Configuration screen. Menu wording can differ between versions.
- Select the player slot you want to configure.
- Choose the handler that matches the way RPCS3 detects the controller. Use the dedicated DualShock 4 handler for a DS4 when available; use XInput for an Xbox or XInput-compatible controller when that handler is offered.
- Select the detected device, then test buttons and sticks. Assign or correct mappings if the inputs do not register as expected.
- Save the configuration and test the controller in a game.
A handler choice alone does not guarantee that RPCS3 has selected the right device or mappings. If the controller connects but does nothing, check the handler, selected device, and input response before installing additional drivers or controller-wrapper software. Set up a DualShock 4
Windows
The RPCS3 Wiki says Windows users can use a DualShock 4 through HIDAPI over USB or Bluetooth with RPCS3’s dedicated DualShock 4 handler and no additional setup steps. If RPCS3 does not detect the controller, temporarily disable tools such as DS4Windows or ScpToolkit while troubleshooting; they may interfere with native detection.
Linux
The RPCS3 guide describes setting up udev rules for the controller’s USB or Bluetooth identifiers. Follow the current instructions for your controller and Linux distribution, then reload the rules or restart as directed and reconnect the controller. These permissions and identifiers are system-specific, so an old shortened rule from another tutorial may not be appropriate.

Set up an Xbox or XInput-compatible controller
Choose the XInput handler and the detected Xbox or XInput-compatible device if your RPCS3 build offers them. Check the mapping, test the inputs, and save. The RPCS3 Wiki describes these controllers as broadly supported for PC use and notes that they generally do not require extra third-party software.
There are two important feature differences: Xbox/XInput controllers do not provide PS3 motion controls or pressure-sensitive buttons, and their printed button labels do not match the PlayStation symbols shown by many PS3 games. If a game depends on motion or pressure input, use a controller that supports the required feature and verify the inputs. The RPCS3 guide points to the GamePad Test homebrew for visualizing motion and pressure-sensitive data.

Which controller should you use?

The right choice depends on your operating system and the features a particular game uses. If your current controller works and supplies the inputs you need, there is no reason to replace it just for RPCS3.
Fix common controller problems
The controller connects, but RPCS3 gets no input
- Check that the selected handler matches the controller interface RPCS3 can see.
- Confirm that the intended device is selected, then test the buttons and sticks.
- Correct any mappings that do not respond and save the configuration.
RPCS3 does not detect a DualShock 4 on Windows
Choose the dedicated DualShock 4 handler and temporarily disable DS4Windows or ScpToolkit if installed. Those tools can conflict with RPCS3’s direct detection.

A DualShock 4 is inaccessible on Linux
Follow the current udev instructions in the RPCS3 controller configuration guide, reload the rules or restart as directed, and reconnect the controller.
A game needs motion or pressure-sensitive input
A standard Xbox/XInput controller does not supply those features. Check the game’s input requirements and use the GamePad Test homebrew, linked from the RPCS3 guide, to visualize motion and pressure-sensitive data.

A tutorial uses different menu names
RPCS3’s wording can change between builds and platforms. Use the options shown by your installed version and consult the live controller guide for current instructions.

If you are configuring an original PS3 controller on Windows, the RPCS3 guide covers dedicated-handler methods using DsHidMini or Sony’s driver, as well as an older XInput route using ScpToolkit. Follow the guide for your operating system and controller. Do not assume an online DS3 listing is genuine or will support every feature based on its appearance.
