To keep a YouTube stream running without leaving your home computer on, run an encoder such as OBS on a Windows cloud PC, feed it a persistent video source, and connect it to a YouTube Live event using the event’s stream key. The VM removes the home PC from the chain, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming: the media, encoder, VM, network and YouTube ingest still need to work.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A Windows cloud VM with a Windows licence, persistent storage, sufficient compute for your encoder and outbound network capacity for the selected stream settings.
- An encoder such as OBS, which YouTube lists as software for recording and live streaming.
- A video source that remains available to the VM. For a prerecorded stream, configure the media to loop or advance as intended.
Provider availability, Windows licensing, regional capacity and the full always-on cost vary. Check current India-region offerings and charges directly with the host; there is no established basis here for naming one provider as best or quoting a typical price.
Configure the stream step by step
1. Enable live streaming and create an event
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Enable live streaming if the channel has not used it before. Allow for the possible first-time activation wait of up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule a stream. Scheduling is useful if you want a watch page to share before going live.
- In the event’s stream settings, obtain the server destination and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your event.
2. Set up the Windows cloud PC
- Select a VM region based on your audience, availability and the host’s network options. For viewers in India, a nearby region may be worth considering, but actual availability and latency depend on the provider and route.
- Choose compute capacity for the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to encode. Check that storage persists across restart and that the VM can sustain the required outbound bitrate.
- Connect to the Windows VM using the host’s remote-access method. Install system updates and OBS or another encoder listed by YouTube.
- Place your source video on persistent VM storage, or otherwise ensure the encoder can access it after reboot. In OBS, add a media source and set it to loop if the stream should repeat one file; for a sequence, prepare a playlist or scene arrangement that advances through the intended videos.
- For a camera-based production, add the relevant capture hardware and audio inputs only if the setup actually requires them. They are not core requirements for a prerecorded feed.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. If YouTube is available as the service, select it and follow the connection or stream-key workflow shown by OBS.
- If configuring a custom destination, copy the server URL from YouTube Live Control Room into OBS’s server field, then paste the event’s stream key into the key field.
- Save the settings and confirm the correct event is selected. Never publish or share the stream key.
4. Choose stable video and audio settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use a supported combination in your encoder, and choose bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one number fits every stream.
| Example H.264 target | YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations for ingest, not a guarantee of the minimum connection speed your VM needs. Leave headroom for network variation and test that the VM can sustain the chosen bitrate. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guide for the applicable codec and resolution row; do not transfer an H.264 figure to a different codec without checking that guidance.

5. Test the broadcast, then verify it after restart
- Run a speed test from the VM and test a representative section of the actual source, including its motion and audio. YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Start the encoder and check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, stream health and any warnings. A running OBS window or scheduled VM alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
- Confirm audio is present at an appropriate level and that the image does not freeze, drop frames or exceed the VM’s capacity.
- Restart the VM as a recovery test. Confirm Windows starts, the source remains available, OBS opens with the right event settings, and the feed returns to YouTube. Plan how you will detect and respond if any part fails.
Plan around 24/7 failure points
A cloud PC avoids dependence on your home computer and home connection, but continuous delivery still depends on the source file, encoder process, VM, outbound network, YouTube ingest and recovery procedure. A VM being on is not an uptime guarantee. Decide how you will monitor the Live Control Room and restart or reconnect the encoder if it stops.
- Source unavailable: keep media on persistent storage and check its path and permissions after a restart.
- Encoder exits or stalls: verify the process is running and that the correct scene and media source remain active.
- Network or ingest interruption: check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the VM’s outbound connection, then reconnect using the event’s current settings.
- VM restart or host issue: test your recovery procedure and confirm whether the provider’s restart and recovery options fit your needs.
Copyright, monetization and replay considerations
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use on YouTube. A continuously available feed does not make copyrighted music, gameplay footage or other material safe to rebroadcast; review YouTube’s current copyright rules and the permissions for every source. Monetization eligibility is a separate matter: reused or repetitive material may be treated differently under YouTube’s policies, so do not assume that keeping a stream live makes it eligible.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete archive for one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. If a replay matters, check YouTube’s current behavior and arrange a separate recording or plan shorter sessions.
Do not confuse a Windows VM with Google Cloud Live Stream API
A Windows VM running OBS and sending RTMPS to YouTube is different from Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API. Google Cloud documents that a channel in an active streaming state may be restarted after 24 hours; that lifecycle condition applies to its API product, not to the runtime of a Windows VM pushing an encoder feed to YouTube. See Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation for that product’s quotas and lifecycle details.
