Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can use NVENC for a continuous FFmpeg stream to YouTube only if your Linux VPS exposes a compatible NVIDIA GPU to the guest and its FFmpeg build includes the NVENC encoder you need. A GPU listing alone does not prove either condition. Verify both on the actual VPS, then set the stream to YouTube’s codec, bitrate, keyframe and network requirements—and test the long-running setup before relying on it.
What you need before using NVENC
NVENC is NVIDIA hardware video encoding. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guidance demonstrates the h264_nvenc encoder, but that example does not establish compatibility for every GPU, driver, FFmpeg build or virtual machine. The Linux image itself does not provide NVENC: the VPS must expose supported NVIDIA encoding hardware to the guest.
- A VPS provider that confirms the Linux guest can access a compatible NVIDIA GPU and NVENC.
- An installed NVIDIA driver and an FFmpeg build that exposes the encoder for your chosen codec.
- A recording or playlist to send, plus the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
- Sustained outbound capacity for the full stream bitrate, with additional headroom.
No specific VPS provider, GPU model, Linux distribution or driver combination is established here. Check those together with the host before buying or configuring an instance.
Check GPU and FFmpeg access on the VPS
Run these checks after connecting to the VPS. They are diagnostic commands, not installation instructions; driver installation and package commands depend on the distribution and the host’s GPU setup.

Check whether the guest can see an NVIDIA device:
nvidia-smiIf the command is missing or reports no accessible device, the guest is not ready to use NVENC. Ask the host to confirm GPU passthrough or instance configuration; do not assume that a GPU shown on a product page is available inside your VM.

Check the encoders in the FFmpeg binary you will actually run:
ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders | grep nvencLook for the encoder matching the intended output, such as
h264_nvenc. If it is absent, that FFmpeg build cannot use it. A different FFmpeg binary may have different capabilities, so repeat the check using the path or container that will run the production stream.Rank #2

Do not proceed on the assumption that NVENC is working merely because FFmpeg starts. Verify that the video reaches YouTube and that the Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream.
Choose YouTube-compatible video settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the recommended secure ingest option. Select settings for the codec, resolution and frame rate you will actually send rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
These are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 video bitrates; the page also gives recommendations for other codec, resolution and frame-rate combinations. Match your chosen output to that table rather than applying the H.264 figures to HEVC or AV1. The two-second keyframe target is also from YouTube Help.
For a two-second GOP, set the encoder’s keyframe interval to twice the output frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Keep the output frame rate stable so the interval means what you intend. Account for audio and any other stream data when estimating the total bitrate: YouTube’s upload headroom advice applies to the total, not just the video track.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and obtain the ingest URL and stream key. The URL is the destination; the key authorizes the feed for that stream.
- Use the RTMPS option when available and suitable for your encoder. Copy the URL and key from YouTube’s stream settings; follow the URL format shown there rather than guessing how the key should be appended.
- Keep the stream key out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories and shared logs. Treat it like a password. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset flow as a channel owner or manager, then update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Set the stream’s visibility and schedule in YouTube according to whether you are testing privately or broadcasting to viewers. Confirm the correct stream is selected before sending the feed.
Build an FFmpeg command for a looping recording
The following is a starting template for looping a local video file with H.264 NVENC. It is not a universal production command: the input, available encoder options, audio tracks, chosen bitrate and YouTube ingest URL vary by deployment. Replace every placeholder with a value that matches your file, actual FFmpeg build and stream settings.

Use it only after confirming that encoder is available in the FFmpeg binary being run.-rc cbrrequests constant-rate control. SetVIDEO_BITRATEto YouTube’s recommendation for your selected H.264 mode, and setGOP_FRAMESto twice the output frame rate for the recommended two-second keyframe interval.-c:a aacencodes audio as AAC. Choose an audio bitrate that fits your source and stream; YouTube’s video bitrate recommendation is not an audio bitrate.YOUTUBE_INGEST_TARGETmust resolve to the destination in the format YouTube provides for your stream, including the key in the location expected by that ingest setup. Do not put a live key into a public command example or shell history.
This template does not force a resolution or frame rate. If the source differs from the intended YouTube output, decide whether to scale or change frame rate, then verify the resulting stream. NVENC may not expose the same options across all driver and FFmpeg combinations; check the installed encoder’s help output before adding tuning flags. Avoid copying a command tuned for a different GPU or FFmpeg build without validating it.
For a playlist or multiple files, the input and transition logic must be designed for that playlist; -stream_loop -1 repeats one input file, not a folder or a multi-item schedule. Test transitions, audio continuity and the stream’s final output before leaving it unattended.
Keep the stream running and verify it
A command that connects once is not, by itself, a 24/7 service. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or equivalent service manager that can report failures and restart the process, and keep its logs available for diagnosis. Configure restart behavior deliberately: a bad input or incorrect key will not be repaired by restarting the same failing command forever. Protect the key in the service configuration and restrict access to files and logs that may contain it.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Check that the VPS has sustained outbound throughput above the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate; include audio in that total.
- Start a representative test with the same media, encoder, bitrate, frame rate and network path planned for production.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and health messages. Confirm the public or private watch page shows both picture and sound as intended.
- Review FFmpeg output and supervisor logs for disconnects, encoder errors, repeated restarts or input ending unexpectedly. If you record locally too, verify that recording separately.
- Leave the test running long enough to expose the failures you are trying to prevent, then check the stream again after any change to the VPS, driver, FFmpeg build, input or settings.
A 24/7 channel and a single 24-hour live event are not the same operational plan. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish the archive behavior of one event longer than 12 hours. If preserving archives matters, verify YouTube’s current handling for your workflow and consider whether periodic stream transitions are acceptable. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour event will be archived in the same way as a shorter stream.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
nvidia-smi cannot see a GPU |
The VPS guest does not have working GPU access, or its driver setup is incomplete. | Ask the VPS host to confirm guest GPU access and supported driver setup. Do not try to solve absent passthrough by changing FFmpeg flags. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder | The active FFmpeg build does not include the requested NVENC encoder. | Check the encoder list for the exact binary, container or service command used in production. Install or select a build appropriate to the host’s supported driver and GPU. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The ingest URL or key may be wrong, the wrong stream may be selected, or network access may be unavailable. | Re-copy the destination and key from the intended Live Control Room stream, check for an exposed or reset key, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error and VPS network policy. |
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient input | The stream bitrate may exceed sustained VPS egress, or the network may be inconsistent. | Measure or verify sustained outbound capacity for the selected VPS plan. Compare it with total video-plus-audio bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Stream health warns about settings | Codec, bitrate, frame rate or keyframe interval may not match YouTube’s guidance for the selected mode. | Check the current YouTube encoder recommendations for the actual codec and output mode. For the listed H.264 modes, use the matching bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. |
| Video plays but audio is missing | The source may have no audio track, the wrong track may be mapped, or the encode may not match the media. | Inspect the input streams, confirm the map selects the intended audio track, and test the output on the watch page with sound enabled. |
| The stream ends or loops incorrectly | The input may not be the file expected, or a one-file loop may have been used for a playlist. | Confirm the exact input path and duration. Use playlist logic designed for multiple media items and test transitions rather than assuming -stream_loop -1 handles a playlist. |
| It reconnects but repeatedly fails again | A supervisor may be restarting a persistent configuration, key, input or compatibility error. | Read the first failure in FFmpeg logs, correct its cause, then test a clean run before relying on automatic restarts. |
| The long stream has no expected archive | The session may exceed YouTube’s documented automatic-archive threshold. | YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Verify current handling for longer events and plan stream transitions if your archive workflow requires them. |
Cost and operating trade-offs
DIY cost depends on the specific VPS plan, GPU access, storage, outbound network allowance and how long the process runs. The available evidence does not establish current provider prices or a particular instance that supports this workload, so compare plans directly and get GPU access confirmed before paying. An instance with a GPU listed is not sufficient unless the Linux guest can use NVENC.
NVENC changes where video encoding happens; it does not remove the need for stable VPS egress, correct YouTube settings, a protected stream key, process monitoring or an archive plan. If you are deciding between a GPU VPS and running the feed from a local machine, include the cost and operational burden of keeping that machine and connection available.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube without operating FFmpeg on a GPU VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video in the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from StreamNeo’s cloud, so your computer can be off.
- Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
See StreamNeo for the service details, or start the free first day.
