How to Configure an AWS Elemental MediaLive HLS Input for YouTube Live

A MediaLive HLS input pulls a playlist from an upstream source; YouTube’s ingest URL belongs in a separate channel output. Here’s how to configure both sides without confusing them.

An AWS Elemental MediaLive HLS input pulls a live HLS playlist from an upstream HTTP or HTTPS source. It is not where you enter YouTube’s ingest URL. You configure the input for the source, attach it to a MediaLive channel, and configure a separate channel output for YouTube using the ingest protocol and stream details shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

Understand the source and destination before configuring anything

The word “HLS” can refer to two different parts of this workflow:

  • MediaLive HLS input: MediaLive fetches a playlist from an upstream server. You need the playlist URL and, if the source requires them, credentials.
  • YouTube HLS ingest: YouTube receives a stream from an encoder or output. YouTube supplies an HTTPS ingest URL and an HLS-protocol stream key when you select HLS ingestion in Live Control Room.

These are opposite directions: MediaLive pulls from the HLS input source; a channel output sends media to YouTube. Do not paste a YouTube ingest URL into the MediaLive HLS input field unless YouTube is actually the upstream HLS source you intend MediaLive to pull from. For ordinary encoder streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS; HLS is a distinct ingest choice.

Before creating the HLS input

Get the upstream source details

Ask the source operator for the live HLS playlist URL or URLs and any authentication details required to access the server or an encrypted HLS license server. Confirm that the playlist changes as the live event progresses; a static VOD playlist is not a live source.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the input class to match the channel

A standard MediaLive input uses two source URLs; a single-class input uses one. For a standard configuration, use two genuinely available, redundant upstream endpoints. Repeating the same URL does not create source redundancy. Choose the input class to fit the planned channel topology rather than entering duplicate URLs to fill a field.

Create the MediaLive HLS input

  1. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, open Inputs and choose Create input.
  2. Enter a name for the input and set Input type to HLS.
  3. Choose the input class appropriate to the channel: standard for two source URLs or single-class for one.
  4. Enter the upstream HLS playlist URL or URLs provided by the source operator. If the source server or encrypted HLS license server requires credentials, configure them for the input. AWS stores these credentials using Systems Manager Parameter Store password parameters.
  5. For an HTTP or HTTPS HLS live source, set Buffer segments to a value from 3 through 10 inclusive. A blank value or a value of 11 or more causes MediaLive to treat the input as VOD rather than live.
  6. Create the input. Then open the MediaLive channel and add the input under Input attachments.

AWS does not recommend Amazon S3 as a live source. Use a live, changing playlist served in a way supported by the input configuration, and verify that the chosen URLs and credentials are reachable before troubleshooting the channel.

Configure the YouTube destination separately

For the usual encoder workflow, select RTMPS

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the intended stream and obtain its stream key and RTMPS server URL.
  2. Configure the MediaLive channel’s output for YouTube only if the required output mode is supported for your channel and the URL and key requirements match. The input setup above does not create or configure that output.
  3. Keep the stream key secret. YouTube uses it to identify where the encoder should send the feed and to accept that feed.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for ordinary encoder streaming. The stream URL and key are account- and stream-specific, so use the values displayed in Live Control Room rather than copying a generic endpoint.

If the YouTube stream is set to HLS ingestion

  1. In Live Control Room, create or select a stream and choose the HLS protocol for its stream key.
  2. Copy the HTTPS stream URL YouTube provides and follow YouTube’s instructions for placing the key. Use the URL exactly as supplied, including its query fields; substitute the stream key only where YouTube’s instructions specify.
  3. Configure a channel output only after confirming that the intended MediaLive output mode supports the selected YouTube HLS requirements.

YouTube’s published constraints for its HDR-over-HLS workflow are specific to that workflow: segments must be 1–4 seconds, use TS format, and be sent with a rolling playlist containing no more than five outstanding segments. Byte range is unsupported; HTTPS POST or PUT is required; encryption is unsupported except HTTPS. Do not assume those HDR/HLS details apply to every YouTube HLS mode—check the requirements for the stream you selected.

Check encoder settings against YouTube’s requirements

YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS protocols, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and sets a maximum of 4 seconds. These are YouTube encoder requirements, not evidence that a particular MediaLive-to-YouTube output configuration has been tested or will work without validation.

Use the protocol-specific requirements shown for your YouTube stream, then verify the corresponding MediaLive channel output settings and supported output mode in the AWS console. Keep the input’s HLS source settings separate from the destination’s protocol, URL and stream key.

Validate the configuration and troubleshoot common failures

  • MediaLive cannot read the input: Confirm the URL is the upstream playlist, not the YouTube destination URL. Check that it is reachable and that any server or license-server credentials are correct.
  • The source behaves like VOD: For HTTP/HTTPS live HLS, check that Buffer segments is set from 3 to 10. A blank setting or 11 and above is treated as VOD. Also confirm the playlist is changing rather than static.
  • The input class or source count does not match: Standard inputs require two source URLs; single-class inputs use one. For redundancy, verify that both standard-input endpoints are independently available upstream sources.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Recheck that the output uses the same protocol selected in Live Control Room and that you copied that stream’s current server URL and key accurately. An HLS URL/key pair is not interchangeable with an RTMPS destination.
  • The output protocol or fields are unclear in MediaLive: Do not infer support from YouTube’s encoder requirements. Confirm current MediaLive channel output support and the requirements of the specific YouTube stream before deploying.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as a secret. If it is disclosed, replace or reset it using the controls available in Live Control Room and update the output configuration.

Console labels, protocol options, URLs and keys can change. The values in your current AWS and YouTube consoles take precedence. The documented input and YouTube ingest workflows explain the distinction, but they do not establish that a particular MediaLive channel can publish successfully to every YouTube endpoint without configuration checks and validation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different, simpler route than configuring a MediaLive input and output: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
