Estimate a 24/7 YouTube stream’s outbound data from the encoder’s actual output bitrate and runtime: decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds ÷ 8,000. At a constant 1 Mbps, the stream sends about 10.8 decimal GB per day, or 324 GB in a 30-day month, before overhead and other instance traffic. That estimates data volume—not whether an EC2 instance can sustain the stream or what AWS will charge.
Calculate how much data the stream sends
Use the bitrate the encoder actually sends, not just a resolution or quality label. If video and audio rates are listed separately, add them. For variable-bitrate output, use the average bitrate over the period or measured byte totals rather than multiplying a short peak rate across the whole month.
- Find the encoder’s configured output bitrate in Mbps.
- Set the runtime in seconds. A 30-day month is 2,592,000 seconds; a 31-day month is 2,678,400 seconds. Account for planned downtime if the stream is not continuous.
- Calculate decimal payload GB:
bitrate in Mbps × runtime in seconds ÷ 8,000. - If useful, add a clearly labeled operational margin for protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, or other instance traffic. This is your planning allowance, not an AWS rule.
The formula uses decimal GB, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A binary GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. AWS metering and billing definitions may differ from a simple payload calculation, so treat the result as an estimate rather than an exact bill.

These are arithmetic estimates of stream payload before operational margin and unrelated traffic. Monthly volume scales linearly with bitrate and runtime.

Choose a realistic bitrate input
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not measurements of your encoder’s actual average network use. Check the encoder configuration and, after launch, measure traffic.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into formats for viewers. The broadcaster’s outbound traffic to YouTube is the ingest stream, not the sum of all viewer playback renditions. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Separate data volume, network capacity, and cost
Volume: how many bytes leave the instance?
Use the bitrate-and-runtime calculation for a first estimate. It addresses transferred volume, not the instance’s ability to send the stream or the resulting charge.
Capacity: can the instance sustain the outgoing rate?
Check the selected instance type’s baseline network bandwidth and applicable flow limits. AWS describes some smaller instance types with “up to” bandwidth and network I/O credits that allow bursts above baseline. Burst is best effort, and AWS says available burst time varies by instance size; its documentation describes limited burst periods typically ranging from 5 to 60 minutes depending on size. A 24/7 stream needs sustained capacity, so an “up to” number alone does not establish suitability.

Available bandwidth also depends on instance type, vCPU count, destination, traffic-flow characteristics, and instance-level network allowances. A YouTube ingest connection may be a single flow, so assess applicable single-flow behavior as well as total instance capacity. Do not infer actual throughput from a nominal network label alone. Consult AWS EC2 instance network bandwidth documentation, and leave headroom above the target bitrate.
Cost: what AWS will bill for the traffic
Apply the current data-transfer-out pricing and any eligible allowances for your region and account, then account separately for compute and other services. Rates, billing definitions, free-tier eligibility, and commitment discounts can change or vary. The AWS pricing page captured for this estimate showed a US East (Ohio) example with tiered internet data-transfer-out pricing and a 100 GB monthly allowance aggregated across eligible AWS services and regions, subject to exclusions. Validate the estimate after launch
- Review the stream’s configured bitrate and runtime over the same interval you will measure.
- Use CloudWatch’s EC2
NetworkOutmetric to inspect outbound instance traffic. - Compare billing usage separately. AWS distinguishes
NetworkOutfromDataTransfer-Out-Bytes, the metric used in Cost Explorer reports; summingNetworkOutalone does not necessarily reproduce a bill. See AWS guidance on calculating EC2 network usage. - Check stream health and relevant network performance metrics as well as monthly totals. Instance metrics are aggregated over configured periods, so short microbursts that exceed allowances or drop packets may not appear at ordinary metric granularity.
For a continuous stream, test before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended content, then monitor stream health while it runs. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
