BEC is a third-party automated RCon utility. Its maintainer says it was built for ArmA 2 and ArmA 3 and continues to work with DayZ Standalone because the RCon protocol has not changed substantially; that is maintainer documentation, not a compatibility guarantee from Bohemia Interactive. Public-hive servers also face restrictions on several BEC/RCon functions, so check the current server rules before automating enforcement.

What BEC does on a DayZ server
BattlEye Extended Controls provides an automation layer over BattlEye RCon. Once connected, it can read the server’s RCon responses, issue administrative commands through the BattlEye interface, send timed messages, and run scheduled shutdown or restart tasks. BEC does not replace the DayZ server, BattlEye, or the provider’s control panel; it is a separate process that must be able to reach the BattlEye RCon endpoint.
The important distinction is between the game port and the RCon port. Players connect to the DayZ game port, while BEC connects to a separate BattlEye RCon port. The two services can run on the same machine, but they still need their own correctly matched settings. Every BEC instance also needs the path to the BattlEye directory used by the running DayZ instance, not a similarly named folder left over from an older installation.

The BEC project README documents DayZ use as a continuation of the ArmA RCon protocol. Treat that as practical guidance rather than a Bohemia Interactive support statement: updates to DayZ, BattlEye, or a hosting provider’s wrapper can change behavior.
Prerequisites and the correct file locations
Run the DayZ dedicated server at least once before configuring BEC. A first launch creates or reveals the active BattlEye directory, which is where BattlEye configuration, logs, and RCon-related files are stored. Bohemia Interactive’s server-configuration material identifies this BattlEye area as the working location; do not assume that a manually created folder is the one the server actually reads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrepare the server
- Start the DayZ server with BattlEye enabled and allow it to finish initialization.
- Stop it cleanly after confirming that the expected BattlEye directory exists.
- Record the full path. You will use that exact path for BEC’s
BePath. - Choose an RCon port that is not used by any DayZ game port or another service. If several DayZ instances share the host, assign a different RCon port and password to every instance.
- Copy the BEC distribution to a separate folder, such as
C:ServersDayZBEC, rather than mixing its executable with the server binaries.

When a managed host exposes only a control panel, the names and paths may be presented as editable fields rather than ordinary Windows folders. The same relationships still apply: the server’s active BattlEye path, the BattlEye RCon port, and BEC’s matching port must refer to one instance.
Set the BattlEye RCon port and password
Open BEServer_x64.cfg in the active BattlEye directory and add the two required directives documented by BattlEye:
RConPort 2305
RConPassword change-this-to-a-long-unique-secret
RConPort is required and must differ from the DayZ game-server port(s). The value 2305 is only an example; confirm that your chosen port is unused and reachable in your own network and hosting layout. Replace the example password with a long, unique secret. Do not reuse a game-admin password, a control-panel password, or the sample text.
Multiple instances on one machine
For each DayZ instance, use a separate BEServer_x64.cfg in that instance’s active BattlEye directory. Give each instance its own RCon port and password, and later give its BEC process the corresponding BePath. A common cause of cross-instance administration is starting BEC with the right port but the wrong BattlEye directory.

Protect the credential
- Restrict access to the configuration file to trusted server administrators.
- Keep the password out of public scripts, screenshots, and chat.
- Change it if the file has been exposed, then update BEC’s connection settings or any provider-side secret field.
Configure BEC’s Config.cfg
In BEC’s Config directory, create or edit Config.cfg. The maintained example uses the following core settings:
[Bec]
Ip = 127.0.0.1
Port = 2305
BePath = C:ServersDayZServerNameBattlEye
Admins = Admins.xml
Commands = Commands.xml
[Misc]
Scheduler = Scheduler.xml
Timeout = 10
Change the values to match your installation. The settings are case-sensitive in meaning even when the file itself accepts flexible spacing.
Connection settings
| Setting | What to enter | Important check |
|---|---|---|
Ip |
127.0.0.1 when BEC runs on the same host as DayZ |
Use a deliberately configured reachable address only for a remote BEC deployment; do not expose RCon unnecessarily. |
Port |
The same number as RConPort in BEServer_x64.cfg |
A mismatch prevents connection even when both programs are running. |
BePath |
The full path to the active BattlEye directory | It must be the directory used by the running instance, not a backup or another server’s folder. |
Admins |
The administrator file name or valid path | Keep Admins.xml where BEC expects it, or replace the value with the correct path. |
Commands |
The command file name or valid path | Use the same rule for Commands.xml. |
Scheduler |
The scheduler file name or valid path | The example names Scheduler.xml; ensure the file is in the expected BEC configuration location. |
Timeout |
The connection timeout value, such as 10 in the example |
Change it only when you understand the effect on your network and host. |
The example also exposes optional controls such as AutoLoadBans, KickLobbyIdlers, ChatChannelFiles, and SlotLimit. Enable optional controls one at a time, record the policy they implement, and test them with a small administrator group before applying them to every player.
Place the BEC support files
BEC must be able to resolve every file named in Config.cfg. Keep Admins.xml, Commands.xml, and Scheduler.xml in the configuration location expected by your BEC package, or change the settings to explicit valid paths. A typo in a file name can look like a connection problem because BEC may start but fail when it loads a feature.
If BEC logs a missing bans file, follow the project README’s instruction to create bans.txt in the active BattlEye directory. Create it only in the directory used by this instance; putting it beside Bec.exe does not satisfy a path lookup that targets BattlEye.
Keep one configuration set per server instance
When several instances run on one host, give each BEC process its own configuration folder or an unambiguous configuration file. Each set should point to its own BattlEye directory, RCon port, password, admin file, command file, and scheduler. This prevents a restart schedule or ban action intended for one instance from being sent to another.

Start BEC with the required flags
Open a command prompt in BEC’s own directory and launch it with the flags shown in the project README:
cd /d C:ServersDayZBEC
start "BEC" Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dsc
The -f Config.cfg argument selects the configuration file, while --dsc is required by the documented launch method. Starting Bec.exe by double-clicking it, or omitting either flag, can leave BEC running without the settings you edited.
Choose a startup order
- Start DayZ and wait until BattlEye has created or opened the active directory.
- Confirm that
BEServer_x64.cfgcontains the intended RCon settings. - Start BEC from its own folder with
-f Config.cfg --dsc. - Read the BEC log and the DayZ/BattlEye console for a successful RCon connection.
- Only after the connection is confirmed, enable scheduler actions or automated kicks and bans.
The README describes both a dedicated batch file and an integrated start-script approach. Whichever method you choose, preserve the same working directory and required flags. If a provider starts processes for you, place the equivalent arguments in its startup field rather than relying on an interactive desktop shortcut.
Schedule messages and restarts with Scheduler.xml
The BEC scheduler can send timed server messages and perform shutdown-related tasks. The project README includes a sample schedule with restart warnings. Treat those times and messages as examples: replace them with the schedule, timezone, warning intervals, and maintenance window appropriate for this server. Do not assume a sample noon/midnight schedule matches the host’s clock or your community’s play hours.
Build a safe restart sequence
- Use warning messages that tell players the exact action and expected timing.
- Leave enough time for players to log out safely; choose intervals that fit your server’s population and provider shutdown speed.
- Schedule the maintenance action only after confirming that BEC can connect reliably.
- Check the host’s timezone and daylight-saving behavior so a recurring schedule does not drift from the published timetable.
- If the control panel already owns restart operations, decide whether it or BEC is authoritative. Running both schedules can produce duplicate shutdowns.
Keep scheduler changes small. Add or alter one event, watch the BEC log through a complete cycle, and then add the next event. A message-only test is safer than beginning with an automated shutdown.

Why BEC will not connect
The port values do not match
Compare RConPort in BEServer_x64.cfg with Port in BEC’s Config.cfg character by character. A correct password cannot overcome a wrong port. Also verify that the chosen RCon port is not the DayZ game port and is not already claimed by another process or another DayZ instance.
BePath points to the wrong directory
This is especially common after a server move or an update that changes the installation layout. Locate the BattlEye directory opened by the running DayZ process, then replace BEC’s BePath with that full path. The BEC README explicitly warns that BePath must match the BattlEye directory.
BEC was started without its configuration
Close BEC and relaunch it from its own directory using the documented command. Check the process or service definition for both -f Config.cfg and --dsc. If a provider uses a startup template, ensure the template passes these arguments instead of silently launching the executable alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DayZ has not initialized BattlEye
Stop BEC, start DayZ with BattlEye enabled, and wait for the active directory and logs to appear. Starting BEC before BattlEye is ready can produce a misleading connection failure.
The host blocks a remote connection
For a same-host deployment, use 127.0.0.1 and avoid exposing RCon externally. For remote BEC, use only the deliberately configured address, confirm that the host permits the RCon connection, and verify routing and firewall policy for the selected port. Do not open more access than the deployment requires.
A required file is missing
Read the BEC log for the exact file name. Restore the file in the expected configuration location or change the corresponding setting. If the message specifically names bans.txt, create it in the active BattlEye directory as directed by the BEC README.

|---|---|---|---|
| BEC location | Same host as DayZ | Separate, deliberately configured host | Local placement is simpler; remote placement adds routing and access-control work. |

| Restart owner | BEC scheduler or provider panel | BEC scheduler or provider panel | Choose one authoritative scheduler to avoid duplicate restarts. |
| Hive type | Private or public | Private or public | Public-hive rules can limit enforcement and restart behavior regardless of placement. |
For most administrators, local BEC with Ip = 127.0.0.1 minimizes network exposure and makes path troubleshooting easier. A remote arrangement can be appropriate when the game host cannot run auxiliary software, but it should be treated as a security and networking project rather than a simple copy of the local configuration.
Public-hive restrictions you must check
Bohemia Interactive’s public-hive rules state that “Several BEC/Rcon functions are restricted on Public Hive servers.” The listed restricted functions are whitelist, ban, kick, autokick, and slot reserve. If your server is on the public hive, do not assume that a successful RCon connection authorizes every BEC feature.
The same rules limit restart behavior: no more than five restarts per day, and no restart for loot farming or character-integrity protection. The cited rules document is version 12.18. Rules can change, and a game-server provider may impose additional conditions, so verify the current Bohemia Interactive rule set and your provider’s terms before enabling automated enforcement or a recurring restart schedule.
Practical policy steps
- Identify whether the instance is public-hive or private-hive.
- List every BEC action you intend to automate.
- Remove or disable actions that the applicable public-hive rules restrict.
- Count planned daily restarts and document their operational purpose.
- Have an administrator review the scheduler after every policy or hosting change.
Security, maintenance, and recovery
Keep configurations recoverable
Back up BEServer_x64.cfg, BEC’s Config.cfg, the admin and command files, the scheduler, and relevant logs. Store backups somewhere that ordinary game processes cannot overwrite. When restoring, re-check absolute paths because a backup may preserve an old server name or drive letter.
Monitor after updates
After a DayZ, BattlEye, BEC, or hosting-platform update, perform a manual connection test before allowing scheduled actions. Protocol compatibility is based on the BEC maintainer’s documentation, not a formal Bohemia Interactive guarantee, so logs are the practical signal that the current combination still works.
Recover from a bad schedule
- Stop BEC or disable its scheduler entry before the next event fires.
- Keep DayZ running if players are connected and the server itself is healthy.
- Correct the time, message, path, or action in
Scheduler.xml. - Restart BEC with the required flags and confirm a successful RCon connection.
- Test a notification-only event before restoring a shutdown or restart action.
Complete setup runbook
- Run DayZ once with BattlEye enabled and locate the active BattlEye directory.
- Create or edit
BEServer_x64.cfgin that directory. - Set a free
RConPortand a uniqueRConPassword; use separate values for every instance. - Copy BEC to its own folder and place the support files where its configuration expects them.
- Edit
Config.cfg: use127.0.0.1for same-host operation, matchPorttoRConPort, set the exactBePath, and name the admin, command, and scheduler files. - Create
bans.txtin the active BattlEye directory if BEC reports it missing. - Start BEC from its own directory with
Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dsc. - Read BEC and BattlEye logs until they show a successful RCon connection.
- Test a harmless administrative message or command, then enable optional controls individually.
- Replace the scheduler sample with your own timezone-aware warning and maintenance plan.
- For public-hive servers, confirm that every planned action and restart complies with the current rules.
When these relationships are correct, BEC has a predictable path to BattlEye, a matching RCon endpoint, and a controlled place to load administrative and scheduling data. Most failures can be isolated by checking those three relationships in the logs before changing anything else.
