Configure the primary zone, delegate the domain to that server, allow UDP and TCP port 53, validate the zone, increment its SOA serial, reload BIND, and query the authoritative address directly. The wildcard catches names that have no closer explicit record; it does not make the bare apex match and it does not override records such as www, mail, or ACME challenge names.

What a BIND9 wildcard actually does
A DNS wildcard is a resource-record owner name whose leftmost label is an asterisk. In a zone for example.com., the usual form is *.example.com.. If a client asks for an otherwise-unmatched name such as app.example.com., BIND can synthesize an answer from that wildcard record.

It is written in the zone file and interpreted by the authoritative server. A wildcard at *.example.com. does not make example.com. itself match. The apex needs its own A, AAAA, or other record.
Wildcard processing is also conditional. An existing node closer to the queried name, a delegation, or another authoritative record can stop the wildcard from supplying the answer. Treat wildcard coverage as a rule at a particular DNS label boundary, not as an unrestricted recursive pattern. Test the exact names your application will create, including deeper names, rather than assuming every possible depth is covered.

Prerequisites before editing BIND
- A registered domain, for example
example.com, with access to its registrar. - A Linux VPS with a stable public IPv4 address and, if you will publish IPv6, a stable public IPv6 address.
- Administrative access to install and configure BIND9 and to read the zone files.
- UDP and TCP port 53 permitted in both the VPS firewall and the hosting provider’s security group. Authoritative DNS uses both transports.
- Registrar delegation to the nameserver hostnames that will answer authoritatively. If a nameserver hostname is inside the delegated domain, create the required registrar glue record.
A single VPS can be authoritative, but it is a single failure domain. For production resilience, operate a primary and a secondary on separate networks or use another authoritative service as the secondary. The configuration below is a Debian/Ubuntu-style example; paths and service names differ on other distributions.
Choose the record design before using a wildcard

Use explicit records for names that must be different or must remain stable, such as www, mail hosts, service discovery records, and ACME challenge names. The wildcard should be the fallback, not a replacement for those records.
Declare the primary zone
BIND must be serving the domain as a primary zone before a wildcard record can answer authoritatively. In /etc/bind/named.conf.local, add a zone statement like this:

};type primary is also called master in BIND documentation. The file option tells BIND where to load the primary zone data. allow-query { any; }; permits public DNS queries, which is appropriate for an Internet-facing authoritative zone; configure recursion and query ACLs deliberately rather than accidentally exposing an open recursive resolver. allow-transfer { none; }; keeps AXFR and IXFR transfers closed until you have a secondary to authorize.
Create the zone directory if your distribution has not already created it, and make sure the BIND service account can read the file. Keep ownership and permissions consistent with the distribution’s packaged layout; a syntactically correct file that BIND cannot read will still fail to load.
Build the zone file with explicit exceptions first
Create /etc/bind/zones/db.example.com with an SOA record, an authoritative NS record, the server address, explicit exceptions, and the wildcard:

The owner * expands relative to the zone origin, so it represents *.example.com.. The explicit www record remains authoritative for www.example.com.; BIND does not replace it with the wildcard. Keep exceptions above the wildcard in the file for readability and maintenance, although matching is determined by DNS names rather than line order.
Add IPv6 only when the VPS is ready
If the service is reachable over IPv6, publish a separate explicit AAAA record for the apex and a wildcard AAAA record. Do not add an address that is not routed and firewalled correctly, because clients preferring IPv6 will then receive an unusable destination.

Mail routing belongs in an explicit MX record and usually an explicit host address. TXT records for SPF, DKIM, verification, and ACME challenges should be created at their exact owner names. A wildcard A record does not create an MX, TXT, CNAME, or other record type automatically. If a service needs several record types, define each one intentionally and test it.

Delegate the domain and open the network
- At the registrar, set the domain’s authoritative nameservers to the hostnames served by your BIND installation.
- If
ns1.example.comis itself insideexample.com, register its address as glue at the registrar. Without glue, the parent zone may not be able to find the nameserver needed to resolve the domain. - Allow inbound UDP 53 and TCP 53 on the VPS firewall and the provider’s security group. Check both protocols from a network outside the VPS.
- Confirm that the public address in the zone is the address actually assigned to the VPS and that any provider-level NAT or floating-IP mapping is correct.
Changing delegation does not instantly replace cached information. Recursive resolvers retain NS and address data according to their TTLs, so verify the authoritative server directly while the change propagates.
Validate the configuration before reloading
Run checks as an account that can read the BIND configuration and zone file:
sudo named-checkconf
sudo named-checkzone example.com /etc/bind/zones/db.example.comnamed-checkconf checks BIND configuration syntax. named-checkzone checks the zone’s syntax and integrity; it returns status 0 when no errors are detected and status 1 when errors are found. Read warnings as well as the exit status. BIND also performs post-load integrity checks for primary zones, while named-checkzone is useful for explicit checks involving out-of-zone names and glue.
If a deployment generates or compiles zones, named-compilezone can validate integrity and write a selected output format. Do not run it on untrusted zone text: the $INCLUDE directive can cause files accessible to the invoking user to be read.

Fix every error before reloading. A failed reload leaves the old zone active, which can make it appear that a change was ignored when BIND actually rejected the new file.
Reload BIND and confirm the loaded zone
After validation, reload only the affected zone when possible:
sudo rndc reload example.comOn distributions that support it, a service reload is an alternative:

sudo journalctl -u bind9Look for file-permission errors, malformed records, duplicate or conflicting data, missing NS information, and messages about an invalid serial. A successful command means BIND accepted the reload request; authoritative queries are still needed to prove that the intended data is being served.
Test the wildcard, exceptions, and apex directly
Query the VPS’s authoritative address with dig. Direct queries avoid confusing a cached recursive answer with the data currently loaded by BIND:

*.example.com.. - The deeper query demonstrates how your actual zone behaves at another label boundary. Do not infer coverage for every nested name from a single successful test.
Repeat the tests for AAAA, MX, TXT, and ACME-related names when those records are part of the deployment. Test from an external network over both UDP and TCP. A local query can succeed even when a provider firewall, routing rule, or registrar delegation prevents Internet clients from reaching the server.
Understand wildcard boundaries and closer nodes
BIND evaluates a wildcard at a DNS label boundary. A record at *.example.com. can synthesize an answer for an unmatched name under that boundary, but an existing node closer to the query takes precedence. If api.example.com. exists, a query for that name uses its explicit data. If a delegation creates a child zone, the child zone becomes authoritative for names below that delegation and the parent wildcard does not cross it.
Non-terminal wildcard configurations are a common source of confusion. BIND’s check-wildcard option is intended to identify these cases; the BIND Administrator Reference Manual notes that non-terminal wildcards are almost always caused by misunderstanding the wildcard-matching algorithm. Keep wildcard owners at the level you actually intend to serve and test names around every delegation or explicit node.
Remember that a wildcard supplies only the record types present at the wildcard owner. A wildcard A record does not imply an AAAA, CNAME, MX, or TXT answer. If a client requests a type that is not present, it may receive no answer even though an A query succeeds.

SOA serials, TTLs, and change management
Increment the serial on every edit
Secondary servers and recursive caches use the SOA serial to recognize newer zone data. With a manually maintained file, increment the serial for every change and keep the value greater than the previously published serial. A date-plus-counter format such as YYYYMMDDnn is easy to audit, but any monotonically increasing integer is valid.
Select TTLs for the change rate
The example uses a 300-second default TTL as an operational starting point, not a universal requirement. A short TTL limits how long an incorrect address remains cached, while increasing query traffic. A long TTL reduces repeated queries but delays correction after a change. Set record-specific TTLs when a stable record, such as a mail host, deserves different behavior from frequently changing wildcard targets.
Back up and review zone files
Keep a versioned backup of the zone file and the BIND configuration. Review changes before deployment, run both validation commands, reload, and perform external queries. Monitor the authoritative answers rather than relying only on the service process being active.

Secure transfers, updates, and recursion
Restrict zone transfers
Leave allow-transfer closed when no secondary exists. If you operate a secondary, permit transfers only to its known addresses and authenticate transfers where appropriate. Never open AXFR to the entire Internet merely to make a secondary work.
Use authenticated dynamic updates for automation
For systems that create and remove hostnames automatically, BIND supports update-policy rules that authorize identities using TSIG or SIG(0). Define the narrowest identity and name scope needed by the automation. Do not replace a restricted policy with an unrestricted update ACL; unauthorized updates could redirect every wildcard-backed service.
Do not expose unintended recursion
An authoritative public VPS normally should not provide open recursive service. Configure recursion and query ACLs for the role you intend, separating authoritative answers from any private recursive resolver. Review listening addresses and firewall rules after installation so the server cannot be abused as a public resolver.
Single VPS or primary/secondary DNS?

BIND supports primary and secondary zone types. If you add a secondary, authorize only its addresses in allow-transfer, decide whether transfers should be authenticated, and verify that the secondary reports the same SOA serial and wildcard answer. Separate networks matter: two servers in the same failed facility do not provide independent resilience.
Diagnose common failures
The wildcard query returns no answer
- Confirm that the zone file contains
* IN A ...(or the intended record type) and thatnamed-checkzonereturned status 0. - Check that the SOA serial was incremented and the zone was reloaded after the edit.
- Query the authoritative VPS directly with
dig @server name type; a recursive resolver may still have an older cached response. - Look for an explicit closer node, delegation, or record-type mismatch that prevents wildcard synthesis.
The apex does not resolve
Add an explicit record at @. The wildcard owner never supplies example.com. itself.
www unexpectedly points at the wildcard address
Check whether an explicit www record exists in the loaded zone and whether you queried the correct nameserver. If an explicit node is absent, the wildcard is behaving as configured; add the intended record, increment the serial, validate, reload, and test again.
Public resolvers still show old data
Cached answers persist until their TTL expires. Confirm the new answer directly from the authoritative server first, then allow recursive caches to age out. A short TTL cannot retroactively remove data already cached under a previous, longer TTL.
Queries return SERVFAIL
SERVFAIL commonly indicates a delegation problem, DNSSEC issue, transport failure, or zone-load error. Inspect journalctl -u bind9 and BIND logs, verify UDP and TCP reachability, and run dig +trace from a separate host to follow delegation from the root toward your nameservers. Recheck glue and the registrar’s nameserver entries.
The service is running but the zone is stale
Read the loaded SOA serial with dig. If it is old, verify that the zone statement points to the file you edited, that BIND can read that path, and that the reload targeted the expected zone. A successful service status does not prove that every zone reload succeeded.
