Configure keyfile authentication by creating one base64 key, copying the identical file to every replica-set host, and enabling security.keyFile (or --keyFile) together with the same replica-set name on every mongod. Use DNS-resolvable hostnames rather than IP-only member addresses, apply owner-only permissions on Unix, and plan for client database users because enabling internal authentication also enables authorization.

Keyfiles are straightforward for development and test deployments. MongoDB describes them as having limited manageability and cryptographic strength and recommends X.509, LDAP, or Kerberos for production.

What keyfile authentication does
A MongoDB replica set needs a way for its members to prove that they belong to the same deployment. With keyfile authentication, each mongod reads a local file and uses the file contents as the shared password for internal member authentication. Every member must have a copy with identical contents, or at least one key in common when you use the multi-key format.
The keyfile setting also changes client behavior. MongoDB states that enabling internal authentication enables client authorization. In practical terms, applications and administrators must connect as database users with the roles required for their work; turning on the keyfile is not limited to an invisible member-to-member setting.

Keyfiles authenticate a shared deployment identity. They do not give each server a distinct cryptographic identity, which is one reason MongoDB considers them less suitable for a security-sensitive production environment than certificate- or enterprise-identity-based alternatives.
Plan names, networking, and the rollout
Give every member a DNS-resolvable hostname
Before creating the file, choose the hostnames that will identify every replica-set member. Each member must be able to connect to every other member using those names. Configure net.bindIp to include the hostnames that clients and replica-set peers must reach, along with localhost when local access is required.
Recommended Free Tools
MongoDB 5.0 and later reject configurations that use only IP addresses for member identity during startup validation. A deployment can therefore fail before authentication is even evaluated if its replica-set members are configured with IP-only addresses. Use names that resolve consistently from every member and from the clients that must connect.
Choose a rollout path
For a new deployment, prepare the keyfile and configuration on every host, start all members with authentication enabled, and then initialize the replica set using your normal initialization procedure.
For an existing replica set, enabling the setting requires restarts. Use an availability-preserving sequence appropriate to your deployment rather than stopping all members together. Confirm that the file is readable and the hostname configuration is correct before restarting each process.

Decide where the file will live
Use an absolute path that is present on every member, such as /etc/mongodb/keyfile. The path can be different only if each host’s configuration points to its own local copy; the contents must remain common. Store the file on the member’s local filesystem. Do not depend on a removable USB drive or network-attached storage that could disappear from the host during startup.

MongoDB accepts a key string from 6 through 1024 characters, using base64 characters. The documented Unix example generates a long random value and writes it to the chosen path:
openssl rand -base64 756 > /etc/mongodb/keyfile
chmod 400 /etc/mongodb/keyfile
The generated value is within MongoDB’s 6-to-1024-character limit. Keep the file as a single key unless you are deliberately performing a staged rotation.
Set Unix ownership and permissions
On Unix systems, the keyfile must not grant group or world permissions. The account that runs mongod must own the file or otherwise be able to read it. The example’s chmod 400 grants read access only to the owner. If the service runs under a dedicated account, assign ownership to that account and verify the service can traverse the directory containing the file without making the key itself broadly readable.
Permission mistakes commonly appear as a startup failure even when the key contents are correct. Check the path, owner, and mode on each host before restarting. Windows does not check keyfile permissions, but the file still needs to be available at the configured path to the account running the service.

Keep the key value confidential
The keyfile is a shared secret. Anyone who obtains a usable copy can present the shared member credential, so handle it as a credential rather than as ordinary configuration text. Transfer it to each host through your approved secure administration process, restrict local access, and avoid leaving extra copies in removable media, shared folders, shell transcripts, or other locations outside the hosts that need it.
Copy the same key to every member
Place a copy on every server hosting a replica-set member. The files must contain the same key value and be readable by the corresponding mongod account. A single character difference, an accidental trailing change, or a missing file on one host can prevent members from authenticating to one another.
After distribution, check each host independently:
- The configured absolute path exists.
- The service account can read the file.
- Unix mode bits do not grant group or world access.
- The file is stored locally and will still be present after reboot.
- The hostname used by that member resolves from every other member.
Do not substitute separate random keys for separate members in the single-key format. The members need a common key. If you require different values during a planned rotation, use MongoDB’s supported multi-key sequence described below so that there is always one common value during the transition.

replSetName: rs0
net:
bindIp: localhost,mongo1.example.com,mongo2.example.com,mongo3.example.com
security.keyFile points to the local keyfile. replication.replSetName must be identical on all members; rs0 is only an example name. net.bindIp lists the interfaces or hostnames on which the process accepts connections. Make sure every name in the list is valid for that host and that network controls allow the required member-to-member traffic.

Command-line form
If you start mongod from the command line instead of a configuration file, use the equivalent options:
mongod --keyFile /etc/mongodb/keyfile --replSet rs0 --bind_ip localhost,mongo1.example.com,mongo2.example.com,mongo3.example.com
Use an absolute keyfile path and the same --replSet value on every member. Do not mix a correctly configured file with a command line that silently overrides it; establish which source your service actually uses and verify the effective settings before a restart.

Start a new authenticated replica set
- Prepare every host. Create the keyfile, set the required Unix owner and mode, or place it at the required path on Windows. Confirm that the chosen hostname resolves from all members.
- Install the same configuration. Set the keyfile path, replica-set name, and bind addresses on every
mongod. Check for spelling or path differences before starting services. - Start all members with the settings enabled. The processes must start with internal authentication already configured; do not first create an unauthenticated set and then assume the member credentials will appear automatically.
- Initialize the replica set. Use your normal MongoDB replica-set initialization procedure after the configured members are running and can reach one another by hostname.
- Create or use database users for clients. Because authorization is enabled with internal authentication, application connection strings and administrative clients must authenticate with valid database credentials and appropriate roles.
If a member cannot start, stop the rollout and correct the local path, ownership, permissions, hostname, or replica-set name before proceeding. A partially configured set is harder to diagnose than a consistently configured one.

Changing an established set requires operational planning because each member must be restarted with the keyfile setting. Use the availability-preserving sequence appropriate for your topology and maintenance policy. Do not take every member down at once.
- Stage the file first. Copy the same keyfile to every host and verify local readability before changing service settings.
- Stage the configuration. Add
security.keyFileor the equivalent--keyFile, retaining the existing replica-set name and valid hostname-based bind configuration. - Restart according to your availability plan. Move through the members in the sequence your deployment uses for safe maintenance, checking process health and peer reachability after each restart.
- Confirm authenticated client access. Applications that previously connected without credentials may now receive authorization or authentication failures. Update them with database-user credentials before declaring the migration complete.
The setting is not merely a peer-to-peer switch: it enables authorization for clients as well. Coordinate application, monitoring, backup, and administrative connections so that each has a database user and the required role.

Validate the deployment
Validation should cover process startup, network identity, member authentication, and client authorization. A process that starts successfully can still be unable to form a healthy set if names do not resolve or the members do not share a key.
- Process check: Every
mongodstarts with the intended configuration and can read its local keyfile. - Hostname check: Each member resolves the other members’ DNS names and can connect to them on the configured MongoDB port.
- Replica-set check: Members recognize the same replica-set name and can authenticate to their peers with the common key.
- Client check: An authenticated database user can connect and perform only the operations granted by its roles.
- Restart check: A service restart does not lose the file, change its permissions, or alter the effective configuration.
Common failure patterns
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Startup validation rejects member addresses | IP-only member configuration on MongoDB 5.0 or later | Use DNS-resolvable hostnames for the members and include the required names in bindIp. |
| The process cannot open the keyfile | Wrong absolute path, missing file, ownership, or Unix mode | Place the file at the configured path and make it readable by the mongod account without group or world permissions. |
| Members start but cannot authenticate to one another | Different key contents, different replica-set names, or unreachable hostnames | Confirm a common key, identical set name, DNS resolution, and network reachability on every host. |
| Applications fail after authentication is enabled | Client authorization is now enforced | Connect with a database user and grant the roles required by the application. |
| One member fails during a rotation | The member has no key in common with the others | Restore a common old or new key in the multi-key sequence before continuing the rollout. |
Rotate a keyfile without breaking the common key
MongoDB accepts either one key string or a YAML sequence of keys. The sequence form permits a staged change:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- old-key-value
- new-key-value
Every member must share at least one common key at all times. The safe order is to introduce the new key while the old key remains common, update the members to recognize the sequence, and remove the old key only after the rollout has completed.
- Generate or select the new key. It must meet the same 6-to-1024-character, base64-character requirement.
- Add both values. Put the old and new values in the keyfile sequence on the members that are being updated. Keep the old value present so updated and not-yet-updated members retain a common key.
- Roll through the members. Apply the two-key file and restart members using an availability-preserving sequence. Verify peer authentication after each change.
- Remove the old value. Once every member has the new key and peer communication is healthy, replace the sequence with the new key alone and complete the final rollout.
- Retain restrictive handling. The temporary presence of two secrets does not justify broader file permissions or extra copies.
Do not remove the old key from one host before the remaining members have been updated to recognize the new one. The common-key requirement is what keeps the transition interoperable.
Are keyfiles appropriate for production?
MongoDB’s documented guidance is explicit: “Use keyfiles only for testing and development environments because of their limited manageability and cryptographic strength.” Treat that as a security boundary, not as a minor preference. A keyfile can be practical for a lab, a development replica set, or a controlled bootstrap, but it is a shared secret with no separate identity per member and a manual distribution and rotation process.
For production, MongoDB recommends X.509 certificates, Self-Managed LDAP Proxy Authentication (Enterprise), or Kerberos (Enterprise). These choices change the operational model: certificates provide certificate-based identity, while LDAP and Kerberos can integrate with enterprise identity systems. They also introduce their own deployment, lifecycle, and edition considerations.
| Authentication method | Operational manageability | Cryptographic or identity model | Rotation or lifecycle | Edition or licensing note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keyfile | Simplest to deploy, but a shared file must be copied and protected on every member | Shared secret; limited manageability and cryptographic strength according to MongoDB | Manual staged rollout using a common old or new key | Self-managed keyfile configuration; no additional edition requirement is stated here |
| X.509 | Requires certificate issuance and lifecycle management | Certificate-based identity with stronger identity separation than a shared keyfile | Certificate renewal and replacement process | Specific edition requirement is not stated in the supplied material |
| LDAP proxy authentication | Integrates authentication with an enterprise directory | Enterprise identity service rather than a shared member secret | Directory and proxy lifecycle | MongoDB identifies Self-Managed LDAP Proxy Authentication as Enterprise |
| Kerberos | Integrates with an enterprise Kerberos environment | Ticket-based enterprise identity | Kerberos principal and ticket lifecycle | MongoDB identifies Kerberos as Enterprise |
If you are choosing for production, start with the identity and lifecycle requirements rather than the shortest configuration. Keyfiles minimize initial setup, but every host shares the same secret and the operator must distribute, protect, and rotate it consistently.
Quick Recap
Deployment checklist
Before the first start
- Assign DNS-resolvable hostnames to all members.
- Confirm every member can reach every other member by hostname.
- Choose one replica-set name and use it everywhere.
- Generate a 6-to-1024-character base64 key.
- Place the keyfile locally on every host.
- On Unix, set the
mongodowner or read access and remove group and world permissions. - Set
security.keyFile,replication.replSetName, and the requirednet.bindIpvalues on every member.
After startup or restart
- Confirm each process starts with the intended effective settings.
- Check peer reachability and internal authentication.
- Initialize a new set only after all configured members are running.
- Test a client connection with a database user and verify role-based access.
- Record the file location and rotation procedure in the deployment’s operational documentation without distributing the secret itself.
During a rotation
- Keep at least one common key on every member.
- Introduce the new value before removing the old one.
- Roll through restarts instead of changing every host simultaneously.
- Remove the old value only after all members use the new value successfully.
