To make WordPress mail dependable with Mailgun, first verify a dedicated sending domain in Mailgun, then connect the official Mailgun WordPress plugin through either the HTTP API or SMTP. Publish the SPF and DKIM records Mailgun provides, select the correct US or Europe region, use a From address on the verified domain, and test every important WordPress mail path—not just one sample message.

What you need before configuring WordPress
Mailgun cannot send from an unverified domain. Prepare these items before opening WordPress:

- A Mailgun account with a sending domain you control. A subdomain dedicated to application mail, such as
mg.example.com, keeps transactional messages separate from normal business mail. - Access to the DNS provider that hosts the domain’s zone. You must be able to publish the SPF and DKIM records shown in Mailgun’s domain panel.
- An administrator account for the WordPress site.
- The Mailgun API key if you plan to use HTTP API delivery, or a domain-level SMTP username and password if you plan to use SMTP.
- The Mailgun region in which the domain is configured: US or Europe.
Mailgun’s official WordPress integration supports both HTTP API sending and SMTP. The right choice depends mainly on which outbound traffic your host permits and whether your WordPress mailer is designed around SMTP credentials.
Verify the Mailgun sending domain first
Domain verification is the prerequisite that is most often skipped. The plugin can be installed before verification, but Mailgun’s domain must pass its DNS checks before it is ready to send.

1. Choose the domain or subdomain
Use a domain that you control and that will appear in the From address used by WordPress. A dedicated subdomain is often easier to isolate operational mail from other mail systems. Whichever name you choose, enter that exact name in Mailgun and later in the WordPress plugin.
2. Copy the DNS records from Mailgun
Open the domain’s setup or verification view in Mailgun and copy the SPF and DKIM values exactly as displayed. Add them at your DNS host with the record types, host names, and values Mailgun specifies. Do not replace a value with a similar-looking record from another domain, remove quotation marks that your DNS provider requires, or alter a long DKIM key while copying it.

Multiple SPF records can cause a permanent SPF error. Your DNS provider’s interface may automatically append the domain to a host field, so compare the resulting fully qualified name with the name shown in Mailgun.
3. Wait for DNS propagation
DNS changes are not visible everywhere at the same time. Wait for the records to propagate, then return to Mailgun’s domain panel and run its verification check. A check that fails immediately after saving DNS does not necessarily mean the values are wrong; it may simply be reading a cached answer.
4. Confirm every check passes
Do not continue to production sending while SPF or DKIM remains unverified. Correct the record name or value, save the DNS change, wait again, and trigger verification again. Keep a copy of the final records in your deployment notes so a future DNS migration does not silently remove them.
Install and open the official WordPress integration
Install the plugin
- Sign in to WordPress with an administrator account.
- Open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for the official Mailgun WordPress plugin, install it, and select Activate.
- Open Settings → Mailgun. The plugin’s settings screen is where you select the transport, region, domain, and test configuration.
If the plugin is already installed, update it before troubleshooting. Record the current version and back up the existing mail settings so you can restore a known-good configuration if a change has an unexpected effect.

Enter the shared settings
In Settings → Mailgun, choose the Mailgun region, enter the verified sending domain, and select either HTTP API or SMTP. Region selection is not cosmetic: the integration exposes separate US and Europe endpoints, so choose the region in which your Mailgun domain is configured.
The fields shown after you choose a transport differ. API mode asks for an API key and domain. SMTP mode asks for the SMTP host, port, security option, username, and password. Save the settings before using the plugin’s test configuration control.

HTTP API avoids the SMTP-port restrictions imposed by some hosting companies. SMTP is useful when a WordPress mailer specifically requires an SMTP server and credentials. Neither transport bypasses domain verification: SPF and DKIM still need to pass.
Configure WordPress to use Mailgun’s HTTP API
1. Select API mode and region
In Settings → Mailgun, select the HTTP API option and the US or Europe region that matches your Mailgun setup. Enter the verified sending domain exactly, including any subdomain prefix.
2. Add the API key
Paste the Mailgun API key into the plugin’s API-key field. Treat the key as a secret: do not place it in a public support ticket, commit it to a theme repository, or include it in a screenshot. If the site is managed through deployment configuration, inject the value through the site’s protected configuration process rather than hard-coding it in a publicly readable template.
3. Save and run the test configuration
Save the settings and use the plugin’s test configuration control. A successful test confirms that WordPress can reach the selected Mailgun API endpoint and that the key and domain are accepted. It does not prove that every form, reset flow, or notification uses the same mail path, so perform the application-level tests described below.

4. If the API test cannot connect
Check whether the web server permits outbound HTTPS requests. Managed hosting may restrict outgoing connections, require a firewall rule, or use a security module that blocks remote requests from PHP. Ask the host to confirm outbound HTTPS access from the WordPress server, then rerun the plugin test after the restriction is removed.
Configure WordPress to use Mailgun SMTP
1. Create credentials for the domain
Find the credentials in Mailgun under Sending → Domain Settings → SMTP Credentials. Create or select credentials that belong to the same sending domain entered in WordPress.

Mailgun announced on May 9, 2025, that SMTP credentials are no longer generated automatically by the Domains API. Create them through Mailgun’s Credentials endpoint or the Mailgun user interface before testing SMTP.
2. Enter the server and security settings
Use smtp.mailgun.org as the SMTP host. Port 587 with secure SMTP enabled and STARTTLS is the normal starting point. Mailgun lists four ports:

Mailgun explicitly recommends port 587 because some ISPs block or throttle certain SMTP ports. Select the plugin’s secure/STARTTLS option for port 587. Do not select an implicit-TLS mode intended for port 465 while connecting to 587.
3. Enter the username and password
Paste the SMTP username and password created for the selected domain. These are not interchangeable with the Mailgun API key. A credential from a different domain can authenticate unsuccessfully or send with a sender identity that does not match the WordPress configuration.

4. Save and test
Save the settings and run the plugin’s test configuration control. If the connection times out, ask the host whether outbound traffic on port 587 is allowed. If 587 is blocked, test 2525 or 465 according to the host’s policy and the matching encryption mode. Avoid falling back to port 25 merely because it is familiar; it is frequently restricted.
Set a consistent WordPress sender identity
Set the WordPress From address to an address on the verified Mailgun sending domain. For example, if the verified domain is mg.example.com, use an address such as [email protected] rather than an unrelated consumer mailbox.
Keep the sender identity consistent across contact forms, password resets, administrator notifications, ecommerce extensions, and scheduled jobs. A plugin can override the global From header or use its own mail library. A test from the Mailgun settings page may therefore succeed while a form still fails or uses a different address. Configure each extension’s sender fields where available, and make sure its From domain is one Mailgun has verified.
Do not confuse the From address with the Reply-To address. The From identity should remain on the verified sending domain; a form can use a visitor’s address as Reply-To when the form plugin supports that safely. Putting an unverified visitor address in From can trigger authentication problems and makes abuse handling harder.

Test delivery in layers
Test the transport from the plugin
Run the built-in test after saving API or SMTP settings. Record the exact error text, selected region, domain, transport, and port. Those details distinguish an authentication failure from a network block.
Check Mailgun events and logs
Look in Mailgun’s events or logs for the test message. An accepted or delivered event shows that Mailgun received the request; a rejected, failed, or bounced event supplies the next clue. Compare the event’s sender domain and recipient with the values you entered in WordPress.

Inspect the recipient mailbox
Check the inbox, spam folder, and any organization-wide quarantine. A Mailgun event can show acceptance while a recipient system later filters the message. Examine the message’s authentication results and headers when your mail client exposes them.
Exercise real WordPress paths
- Submit a production-like contact or registration form.
- Use the WordPress password-reset flow for a test account.
- Trigger an administrator notification, such as a new-user or comment alert.
- Confirm that each message appears in Mailgun events and reaches the intended mailbox.
Run these tests with both a normal user account and an administrator account if your plugins use different notification rules. Keep the test addresses separate from real customers so a failed configuration cannot expose private data.

Troubleshoot failures by symptom

Enable detailed SMTP diagnostics
When the plugin’s SMTP path needs more detail, enable WordPress debugging and the plugin’s MG_DEBUG_SMTP constant in the site’s protected configuration, following the plugin’s documented placement and syntax. Reproduce one failure, review the resulting log for the connection stage that failed, and disable verbose logging afterward so credentials and message data are not retained unnecessarily.
Protect credentials and keep the configuration maintainable
- Limit WordPress administrator access because the Mailgun settings screen contains credentials that can send mail.
- Store API keys and SMTP passwords in protected configuration or a secret-management system where possible, not in a theme file that is distributed with the site.
- When rotating a credential, create the replacement first, update WordPress, run all transport and application tests, then revoke the old credential.
- Document the verified domain, region, transport, SMTP port, and the DNS records’ owner. This makes DNS or hosting migrations less likely to break delivery.
- Review Mailgun events after plugin, hosting, DNS, or form-plugin updates. A successful historical test does not prove that a later extension still uses the same mail path.
Understand the testing allowance and what it does not prove
The Mailgun WordPress plugin repository describes a free-account allowance of up to 200 emails per day for testing in its 2025 README. Treat that number as a plan detail that can change; confirm the allowance in the account’s current terms before using it for a production workload.
That allowance is not a deliverability guarantee. Authoritative Mailgun integration material does not establish a universal inbox-placement percentage for WordPress sites. Delivery still depends on correct domain authentication, recipient filtering, message content, sender consistency, and the reputation of the sending domain.
