To configure MySQL Group Replication across servers, prepare every instance with a unique identity and reachable Group Replication address, create distributed-recovery credentials, bootstrap exactly one seed server, then start Group Replication on the remaining members and verify that each reaches ONLINE. Group Replication keeps membership and replication state coordinated; it does not redirect application connections, so client failover requires MySQL Router, a connector, a load balancer, or equivalent middleware.

What you are building
MySQL Group Replication forms a group of database servers that communicate over a peer-to-peer Group Replication network. Members exchange group information, detect membership changes, and use distributed recovery when a server joins or catches up. The database servers still need normal SQL connectivity for applications and recovery operations, so a production design normally distinguishes the internal Group Replication address from the SQL client address.

Treat that as a hard planning limit for one group rather than as a recommendation to run nine members in every installation. Fewer members reduce coordination and recovery work; more members may be appropriate only when the failure model and write workload justify them.
Decide the topology before installing
- Single-primary: one member is the writer at a time. This is generally simpler when applications expect one writable endpoint and when writes are not naturally partitioned.
- Multi-primary: more than one member can accept writes. It can reduce dependence on one writer, but application behavior, transaction conflicts, foreign-key interactions, and workload placement require careful design.
Choose the mode before production initialization. The choice changes how applications issue writes and how you design routing, conflict handling, and maintenance.

Prerequisites for every server
Use compatible software and settings
Install a MySQL release that supports the Group Replication features you intend to use and install the Group Replication plugin on every member. Follow the variable requirements for that exact release: replication and GTID requirements can differ between versions, and a setting that is valid on one release may be unavailable or have different constraints on another.
Every member needs a unique server identity. In practice this means a distinct server_id and a unique host identity that administrators can unambiguously map to one machine. Enable binary logging and the GTID and replication settings required by your release and operating mode. Do not copy a complete option file from one server without changing identity and address values.
Plan names, ports, and addresses
Assign each server a distinct group_replication_local_address. This is the address other members use for the internal Group Replication TCP connection; it is not automatically the same as the address applications use for SQL traffic. Use fully qualified hostnames only when those names resolve correctly from every member. Otherwise use reachable IP addresses that are permitted by the network policy.
Prepare a seed list for distributed recovery and group discovery. Every hostname used for a seed or SQL connection must resolve on every member that needs it. Check both forward resolution and firewall reachability from each server to every other server before attempting the bootstrap.
Keep consistency-required variables aligned
Some Group Replication system variables must have the same value throughout the group. Oracle’s variable reference also notes that certain variables cannot be changed while Group Replication is running. A change to one of those variables therefore requires a controlled stop of the group, a full group reboot or new bootstrap as required by the release, and a coordinated change on all members.

Record the intended values for the group name, communication stack, local addresses, seed list, recovery channel, and any consistency-sensitive settings. Configuration drift is easier to prevent when these values are maintained as a reviewed template with per-server identity and address fields separated from shared values.

Apply the following categories of settings to every instance, adapting names, ports, and release-specific syntax to your installation:
- A unique
server_idfor the instance. - Binary logging enabled with the format and retention policy required by your MySQL release.
- GTID and replication settings required for Group Replication in that release.
- The Group Replication plugin installed and loadable.
- A shared group name used by all members.
- A unique
group_replication_local_addressfor this server. - A seed list containing addresses that joining members can reach.
- Recovery-channel settings and credentials.
Do not place group_replication_bootstrap_group=ON in a persistent option file. The bootstrap flag is a runtime control for creating the first group, not a permanent server setting. Persisting it can cause a restarted server to create another group instead of joining the existing one.
Separate internal and client traffic when required
Firewall and security policies may require separate interfaces or port ranges for Group Replication and SQL traffic. The internal address must be reachable by all members, while the SQL address must be reachable by applications, administration tools, or recovery connections as appropriate. Document both addresses and test them independently; a successful client connection does not prove that the internal Group Replication port is open.
Create a distributed-recovery account
Joining members use the group_replication_recovery channel to obtain missing transaction state from a donor. Create a dedicated replication account rather than reusing an application or administrative account. Grant the privileges required by the selected MySQL version, and apply the same account policy consistently across the group.

MySQL permits recovery credentials to be supplied when Group Replication is started or configured for the recovery channel. Choose one method deliberately:
- Runtime credentials: supply the account when issuing
START GROUP_REPLICATION. This avoids storing the password in a persistent option file but requires a secure startup procedure. - Configured recovery channel: store the channel credentials using the account and credential mechanism supported by your release. This is useful for automatic starts, but the stored secret must be protected with the same care as other database credentials.
Whichever method you select, verify that the account can authenticate from every member and that firewall rules allow the recovery connection to a donor. A member can have correct Group Replication addresses and still remain in recovery if the donor connection or credentials are wrong.
Bootstrap the first member exactly once
Choose one server as the initial seed. It must be the only server that bootstraps the group. On that server, after the plugin and replication prerequisites are ready, run:
SET GLOBAL group_replication_bootstrap_group=ON;
START GROUP_REPLICATION;
SET GLOBAL group_replication_bootstrap_group=OFF;The order matters. The bootstrap flag is enabled only for the start operation, then immediately disabled. The MySQL manual states: “The bootstrap should only be done by a single server, the one that starts the group and only once.” Do not run this sequence concurrently on two servers, and do not repeat it merely because another member has not joined yet.

If the start fails, inspect the error and correct the underlying configuration while leaving the bootstrap flag disabled. Re-enable it only when you have deliberately confirmed that this server is the intended seed and that no existing group is active. Bootstrapping a second group can create a split-brain administrative situation in which different servers believe they belong to different groups.

Verify the seed before adding traffic
Use Performance Schema to confirm that the seed actually joined its group:

Check that the host and port are the expected internal communication endpoint and that the group details match your deployment. If the row is absent or the state is not ONLINE, do not proceed to application traffic or additional members. Resolve the plugin, identity, network, or configuration error first.
Join additional servers
Prepare and start each remaining server one at a time. A controlled sequence makes it clear which member introduced a failure and gives the first donor time to stabilize.

- Configure discovery: set the seed list to an address of an existing member that this server can resolve and reach.
- Configure recovery: set the dedicated recovery credentials using the runtime or channel method selected for the deployment.
- Start Group Replication: issue
START GROUP_REPLICATIONon the joining server. Do not set the bootstrap flag on this member. - Watch the state: query
performance_schema.replication_group_membersfrom an existing member and from the joining member. The new row should progress through the release-defined recovery states and ultimately reachONLINE. - Validate before proceeding: confirm the member’s host, port, role, version, and communication details. Only then add another server or direct application traffic to it.
During distributed recovery, the joining member obtains group membership information and copies missing state from a donor. Recovery time depends on the amount of missing data, donor capacity, network throughput and latency, and the release’s recovery behavior. A member that remains in a recovery state is not ready to serve normal application traffic.
Single-primary versus multi-primary

Choose the mode based on transaction behavior rather than on the number of servers. Multi-primary is not a substitute for conflict-free schema and workload design, and single-primary does not remove the need for a client failover path.

Monitor membership and replication health
performance_schema.replication_group_members is the first health check. Monitor at least:
MEMBER_STATE, especially transitions toONLINE, recovery states, error states, or removal.MEMBER_ROLEand the expected writer arrangement for your operating mode.MEMBER_HOSTandMEMBER_PORTfor address drift or an unexpected endpoint.MEMBER_VERSIONwhen checking release compatibility.MEMBER_COMMUNICATION_STACKand the communication details expected by your configuration.
Use the other Group Replication Performance Schema tables and status variables provided by your installed MySQL release to inspect recovery progress, donor selection, certification or applier errors, and communication failures. Alert on a member leaving ONLINE, an unexpected role change, a recovery that exceeds your normal window, and a reduction in the number of healthy members.
Fail over application connections
Group Replication maintains database membership; it does not move existing client sessions when a server dies. A TCP connection that was established to the failed member remains broken, and a new connection needs a usable endpoint.
Use one of these routing patterns:
- MySQL Router: route new connections to an appropriate Group Replication member and remove failed endpoints.
- Connector-aware routing: use a connector that understands the group topology and retries or selects another member according to your application’s policy.
- Load balancer: health-check SQL endpoints and distribute new connections only to members that satisfy the health policy.
- Equivalent middleware: implement the same discovery, health, writer-selection, and retry behavior in another service.
Design retries with transaction semantics in mind. Retrying a connection is not the same as safely retrying a transaction: an application must know whether the original transaction committed before issuing a duplicate write.
Troubleshoot members that are not ONLINE
The member is absent from replication_group_members
- Confirm the Group Replication plugin is installed and started on that server.
- Check that
START GROUP_REPLICATIONwas issued on the intended instance. - Verify the group name and local address, then inspect the MySQL error log.
- Confirm that the internal port is listening and reachable from existing members.
The member remains in a recovery state
- Test the recovery account from the joining server and verify its privileges for the installed release.
- Confirm that the configured seed or donor hostname resolves locally and reaches the expected SQL port.
- Check donor availability, network throughput, and the amount of missing transaction state.
- Review Group Replication recovery tables and status variables for authentication, transfer, or applier errors.
The member enters an error state
- Read the error log and the Group Replication status tables before restarting.
- Compare all consistency-required variables with a known-good member.
- Check for incompatible GTID, binary-log, or replication settings for the selected MySQL release.
- Do not bootstrap the member as a shortcut. Correct the cause and rejoin it through distributed recovery.
Names work on one server but not another
Group Replication and recovery require mutual reachability. Test DNS resolution and the relevant TCP ports from every member, not only from an administrator workstation. Replace an unreliable name with a consistently resolvable fully qualified name or a permitted IP address, then update the shared seed and per-member local-address settings in a coordinated change.
Clients still fail after a database node dies
This is expected when clients connect directly to individual servers. Add Router, connector logic, a load balancer, or other middleware, and configure it to remove failed endpoints and select a healthy member. Existing sessions must reconnect; Group Replication does not migrate them.
Maintenance, restart, and reconfiguration rules
Plan maintenance around the group’s membership and writer requirements. Before stopping a member, verify that enough healthy members remain for the operating mode and that the client-routing layer will stop sending new connections to the server being maintained.
For settings that cannot change while Group Replication is running, schedule a coordinated group operation. Stop members according to the release’s documented procedure, apply the same shared value everywhere, and perform the required full group reboot or controlled bootstrap. Do not leave the bootstrap flag enabled between restarts.

- Bootstrap one seed exactly once, then turn the bootstrap flag off.
- Verify the seed as
ONLINEin Performance Schema. - Join each additional server through the seed and recovery path, verifying
ONLINEafter every join. - Select single-primary or multi-primary based on application write behavior and conflict risk.
- Deploy client routing and test new-connection failover; do not assume Group Replication moves existing sessions.
- Exercise bootstrap, recovery, monitoring, and client failover during planned maintenance.
