For a clear Hindi audiobook stream, set gain at the narration source first, then use OBS’s mixer to balance it. Watch for peaks without clipping, monitor the actual sound, and record a representative test before going live. YouTube’s published stereo live-audio settings are AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz; neither YouTube nor OBS prescribes one universal audiobook loudness target.
What should my OBS audio levels be for YouTube?
Hindi narration uses the same OBS meters and YouTube encoder settings as other spoken-word audio. Aim for clean, intelligible speech that stays below clipping—not a single peak or average number applied to every narrator. OBS identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level. These are meter references and headroom guidance, not a required average or peak target for your audiobook.
OBS’s colored main meter is peak-oriented: it shows peaks, not a complete measure of perceived loudness. Its moving black VU indicator is an RMS-style estimate integrated over 300 ms, and OBS notes that it is not a modern standards-based loudness meter. Use both indicators as clues, then judge the sound by listening. The peak hold remains visible for 20 seconds, making it easier to notice a loud syllable or sudden noise after it happens. OBS explains its meter references and behavior.
Keep the signal below 0 dBFS. Red peaks are not a goal: clipping can make speech harsh or distorted, and turning up the signal without checking can leave too little headroom for emphatic words.

Set up the narration source in OBS
1. Identify what OBS is capturing
Your narration may come from a microphone, an audio interface, or media playback. In OBS’s Audio Mixer, speak or play a passage and confirm that the intended source’s meter moves. Avoid unintentionally combining desktop audio, alerts, or a second microphone with the narration. If the meter stays still, check that the right device is selected, that playback is active, and that the device and connections are working. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends checking the source and listening through the monitoring path.
2. Adjust gain at the source first
Start with the input device’s gain control or the relevant operating-system or application level. OBS’s guidance is: “Always start at the device in question.” Once a clean signal reaches OBS, use the mixer fader to set the source’s final balance. Add a Gain filter only if you need it to correct the level; extra gain also uses up headroom. To add a filter, open the source’s Filters menu from the mixer. OBS’s overview describes audio filters, including Gain.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Listen while watching the meters
Use OBS’s Audio Monitoring option in Advanced Audio Properties and listen at the earliest available headphone or monitor output. Read a representative passage at your normal pace, including softer phrases and emphatic lines. Make small source-level adjustments and listen for unintelligible quiet words, distorted loud words, and unwanted background noise. The meters cannot tell you whether every word is comfortable to hear, so do not rely on their bars alone.
4. Check stereo routing
OBS defaults to stereo output. A mono narration source is normally played to both left and right channels for viewers. If a stereo source has activity on only one side, check its channel routing or use Downmix to Mono when appropriate. Also confirm that your own headphone or monitor output is not one-sided.

Which audio settings should I use in YouTube Live?
For a straightforward stereo audiobook stream, YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies AAC or MP3 audio, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 Kbps. A narration stream configured as stereo can use this profile; Hindi does not require a separate codec setting. YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround audio, a more specialized setup that a simple voice stream generally does not need. Its guidance recommends RTMPS for secure transport; that is a connection protocol, not a loudness control. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the destination requirements.
OBS’s overview gives around 160 Kbps as generic streaming audio bitrate advice. For a YouTube stream, use YouTube’s destination-specific stereo setting of 128 Kbps rather than treating OBS’s general figure as the platform requirement.

Record and check a test before going live
- Read a representative passage. Include quiet phrases, ordinary narration, and louder or emphatic lines at the pace and volume you will use on stream.
- Make a test recording in OBS. Listen to it on headphones or speakers at a normal playback level. Check for clipping, distortion, pumping, distracting background noise, and words that disappear when spoken softly.
- Correct the source before the mix. If the recording is distorted or noisy, revisit the device or application level first. Use the OBS fader for final balance once the source is clean; add Gain only when needed.
- Check YouTube before the audience arrives. Review the stream preview and stream health, and test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” OBS and YouTube both recommend pre-stream checks. OBS Audio Mixer Guide and YouTube’s encoder guidance cover these checks.
Common audio problems and what to check
- The OBS meter does not move: Confirm the selected capture device, playback, and device connections; make sure you are watching the intended source in the mixer.
- Speech clips or sounds harsh: Reduce gain at the input source first and listen again. Keep peaks below clipping rather than trying to drive the meter into red.
- Quiet words are hard to hear, but louder ones distort: Check the source level and listen to the recording. A fader or Gain filter cannot repair distortion that is already present at the input; avoid adding gain without checking headroom.
- Audio is only on the left or right: Inspect stereo routing and the monitor output. For a suitable source, Downmix to Mono can put narration in both channels.
- The meters look acceptable but narration still sounds wrong: Listen to the actual recording and the monitored signal. The main bar tracks peaks, while the black VU marker is only a short-window RMS-style estimate; neither replaces listening.
