Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can run a 24/7 drum and bass radio stream by having FFmpeg send a continuous, rights-cleared audio/video program to YouTube Live, then supervising the encoder and checking YouTube’s stream health. Prepare a file or compatible playlist, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, and use FFmpeg to send it over YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection. A computer or server must remain online for this do-it-yourself setup; restarting FFmpeg after a crash does not, by itself, guarantee that YouTube resumes the same broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A machine that can stay powered on and connected to the internet for the duration of the broadcast: a desktop, mini PC or rented server can all run FFmpeg, but the right capacity depends on whether FFmpeg must encode video in real time.
- A continuous source. The simplest option is a prepared video file containing the music and visuals. A radio stream still needs an audio stream; if you want artwork or a visualizer on the watch page, include a video stream too.
- An FFmpeg build with the required input, muxer and encoder support. Check the build on the target machine and verify that the encoder you plan to use is available before scheduling a broadcast.
- Permission to stream every recording, composition and visual asset. Check YouTube’s current copyright, music and reused-content policies for your channel, location and intended use. A playlist, DJ mix or track being available elsewhere does not establish that you have permission to broadcast or monetize it.
YouTube’s Live Control Room can require first-time live-streaming enablement time. Set up and test the stream before you announce a launch.
Prepare a continuous music-and-visual source
Loop one prepared program file
For a first broadcast, prepare a single file such as radio-program.mp4 with the music and any intended visuals already combined. A file with both audio and video is straightforward to repeat. Put it in a stable location, confirm it plays from beginning to end, and check that it contains the audio and video streams you expect.
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. The -re option reads the file at approximately real-time speed rather than sending it as fast as the machine can read it. Looping a file repeats the whole file; it does not make separate tracks blend together or guarantee a gapless transition. Listen through the loop boundary and test the resulting stream before going public.

Use a playlist only when its files are compatible
You can assemble a longer program from tracks and visuals before streaming, or use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for files with compatible stream layouts and encoding parameters. A text file for that demuxer uses entries such as file 'part-01.mp4' and file 'part-02.mp4', one per line. Compatibility matters: differing codecs, dimensions, frame rates or audio formats can make a simple concatenation fail or behave unexpectedly. Test the whole playlist, including its end and restart, rather than assuming it will loop cleanly.
If the source is audio-only, decide how the live output should provide video before you configure the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance expects the stream to match the selected video configuration; artwork, a visualizer or other moving visuals need to be encoded as a video stream. Test with movement and audio representative of the final show.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Set its title, visibility and other broadcast details. Choose a scheduled workflow if you want a watch page and viewer reminders in advance.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the server URL exactly as Studio provides it and configure the key as a secret. Do not put it in a public tutorial, screenshot, source repository, support post or unprotected log.
- Configure FFmpeg with the RTMPS ingest endpoint and key, following the exact endpoint format displayed in Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection; its RTMPS ingest guidance specifies port 443. Do not substitute a guessed endpoint if Studio supplies a different one.
- Start FFmpeg and inspect the preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, preview the incoming stream and use YouTube’s Go Live action when ready. Confirm that viewers receive the intended audio and visuals.
Keep the stream key out of shell history and ordinary configuration files. A protected environment file or secret manager is safer than typing the key directly into a saved command. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send video to that stream; rotate it in Studio if it is exposed.

Choose FFmpeg settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 frames per second, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and gives 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in its advanced settings. Use YouTube’s encoder settings table for the specific codec, resolution and frame rate you select; there is no single video bitrate that fits every combination.
H.264 at 1080p30 is a practical example: YouTube lists 5 Mbps as its recommended video bitrate for that combination. The command below re-encodes a prepared 1080p-or-smaller program to H.264 at 30 fps, AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and a two-second keyframe interval. It is an example configuration, not a tested command; confirm that your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and that the source has both streams before relying on it.
: "${YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL:?Set this privately to the exact Studio RTMPS endpoint and key}"
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i radio-program.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,format=yuv420p"
-r 30 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 5000k -minrate 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
Set YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL outside the command using a protected secret source; it must contain the exact server URL and key in the format required by the Studio endpoint. The argument is still visible to privileged users on the machine while FFmpeg runs, so restrict machine access and handle logs carefully. The scale-and-pad filter fits the picture into a 1920×1080 frame without stretching it; use a different output frame size and the bitrate YouTube recommends for that resolution and frame rate if 1080p30 is not appropriate. If encoding at 60 fps, recalculate the keyframe interval in frames so it remains two seconds.

When stream copy is suitable
If a prepared file already has video and audio that match the intended YouTube ingest format, -c copy can avoid re-encoding and reduce CPU use. It cannot repair an unsupported codec, unsuitable resolution or frame rate, incompatible audio, or a keyframe interval that misses the ingest requirements. Inspect and test the source first; if it does not match, re-encode and choose settings for its output format.
Leave enough upstream capacity for the video and audio bitrate plus transport overhead, and allow for normal network variation. A stream can fail even when the chosen encoder settings are valid if the host cannot sustain the upload.
Keep FFmpeg running and detect failures
Use a process supervisor
Run FFmpeg under the operating system’s service manager or another process supervisor so it can start at boot, restart after a process exit, preserve useful logs and notify you about restarts. On a Linux machine using systemd, a unit can define the service and restart policy; replace the executable and file paths with those on your host and store the endpoint secret in a root-readable environment file, not in a publicly readable unit.

In /etc/ffmpeg-radio.env, define YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL as the exact endpoint and key configured for the broadcast. Restrict the file to the service administrator and protect the system journal: FFmpeg output or an error report may reveal sensitive connection details. Adapt quoting and secret handling to your systemd version and security policy. A restart policy only responds to process exits; it cannot determine whether the media reaching YouTube is valid.
Check both the process and YouTube’s receiver-side health
Watch the FFmpeg process, its logs and the Live Control Room. YouTube’s Live API exposes stream status and health information, including configuration warnings and errors; documented issue types include low video bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch and missing audio. A process can remain alive while sending a signal YouTube considers unhealthy. Test the response to a deliberate process exit and a network interruption before depending on unattended operation.
FFmpeg reconnect options are protocol-specific. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes reconnect options for particular protocols, including HTTP, and a TCP keepalive setting for RTMP; their availability and behavior depend on the protocol and FFmpeg version. They do not replace a supervisor, YouTube health checks or a tested recovery plan.

Can a YouTube drum and bass stream run 24/7?
YouTube’s Live API documentation describes a 24/7 live-feed pattern in which an ongoing broadcast can continue while a second broadcast is started against the same incoming stream. That makes continuous programming an explicitly contemplated workflow, but it does not remove the need to supervise the encoder, watch stream health and decide how broadcasts should be managed.
For a single ongoing broadcast, make sure the source and FFmpeg process keep running, and monitor the broadcast status. If you need scheduled, successive broadcasts or API-managed broadcasts, test that workflow in advance so you know what viewers see during transitions.
Will YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is an archive rule for streams shorter than 12 hours, not a promise that one 24-hour broadcast will become a complete recording or that YouTube will split it into daily videos. If you need archives, plan for broadcasts shorter than the stated limit or another recording workflow, then test what the channel’s actual broadcasts and archives deliver.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong ingest URL or key, incorrect endpoint formatting, an expired or replaced key, or a blocked connection. | Copy the current server URL and key again from the correct Studio stream, verify the configured RTMPS endpoint, and check outbound network access. Keep the key private while troubleshooting. |
| Audio is missing | The input has no audio stream, the wrong stream was mapped, or the output audio settings are incompatible. | Confirm the source contains audio and that FFmpeg maps it; inspect Live Control Room health. For the stereo example, output AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. |
| Video is missing, distorted or the wrong size | The source is audio-only, the chosen video stream is not mapped, or its dimensions and format do not fit the intended output. | Confirm there is a video stream if the broadcast needs visuals. Check the scale, pad, pixel format, resolution and frame rate against the intended YouTube configuration. |
| YouTube reports low bitrate or a frame-rate warning | The output does not match the selected encoder settings, or the host/network cannot sustain the configured rate. | Compare actual output with YouTube’s codec-, resolution- and frame-rate-specific guidance, then reduce the output demands or improve encoding and upload capacity as appropriate. |
| FFmpeg stops after a period of time | The source ended, the host rebooted, the network failed, or the process exited on an error. | Check logs and the service manager, confirm the input is actually looped, and test its restart policy. Check YouTube’s receiver status after recovery rather than assuming the broadcast resumed. |
| The stream is live but the recording is incomplete | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive behavior. | Design the broadcast and recording workflow around the documented archive limit; do not assume a 24-hour feed will yield one complete archive. |
