How to Configure OBS for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream with H.264

Set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use YouTube’s stream-key workflow, configure H.264 CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then test the bitrate your connection can sustain.

To stream in 4K at 60 frames per second (fps) with H.264, configure OBS to output 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use YouTube’s stream-key workflow, and set the H.264 encoder to CBR with a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s surfaced regional help pages disagree on the recommended 2160p60 H.264 bitrate, so check the current guidance for your region and test your upload connection before going live.

Before you configure OBS

This setup assumes your game or other source can produce 3840×2160 video at 60 fps, and that your PC and internet connection can encode and upload it reliably. OBS settings alone cannot make a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source true 4K60.

  • Check that your system has an H.264 encoder available in OBS, whether hardware-based or software-based. The right choice depends on your system and workload; validate it under actual streaming conditions rather than assuming one encoder is best for every PC.
  • Run an upload-speed test and leave enough headroom to sustain the selected video bitrate plus audio and normal network variation.
  • Use YouTube’s stream-key workflow. YouTube’s help page says resolution and frame rate are detected automatically by default; a custom stream key can be configured for manual resolution selection. The OBS direct YouTube setup resource describes a path that does not support 4K, so use the stream key method for this setup. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder · OBS: Streaming to YouTube

Set up a YouTube stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
  2. In the stream settings, create or select a stream key. If you need to choose resolution manually, use a custom key configured for manual resolution selection; otherwise, YouTube says it detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default.
  3. Copy the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.

Configure OBS for 3840×2160 at 60 fps

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Video.
  2. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160 if you want to compose the scene at 4K. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 so the stream output is 4K rather than a downscaled resolution.
  3. Set Common FPS Values to 60. Confirm your game or source and encoding system can sustain that frame rate while streaming.
  4. Choose a supported H.264 encoder in OBS’s output settings. Hardware and software options vary by system; test the one you intend to use with your actual game, scene, and load.

Set H.264 output, bitrate, and audio

  1. Open Settings → Output. If needed, switch Output Mode to Advanced, then open the Streaming tab.
  2. Choose an H.264 encoder and set Rate Control to CBR.
  3. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and allows a maximum of four seconds.
  4. Set the video bitrate only after checking YouTube’s current regional H.264 guidance for 2160p60. The surfaced official English regional pages list 14 Mbps minimum and 50 Mbps recommended on one page, while another lists 35 Mbps recommended for the same row. These are conflicting recommendations, not a single settled universal target. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain and verify it in a preflight stream. YouTube encoder settings
  5. In Settings → Audio, for stereo, select AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz; YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio. For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only with AAC.

Set color and advanced H.264 options for SDR

For standard dynamic range (SDR), YouTube recommends the following advanced stream settings:

  • Progressive scan
  • Square pixels
  • Rec. 709 color
  • 8-bit depth
  • CABAC
  • Two B-frames
  • One reference frame

Configure the corresponding options in OBS if they are exposed by your selected encoder. Encoder controls differ, and not every system presents the same labels or adjustable settings.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start a test

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and choose the stream-key connection option if prompted.
  2. Paste the key copied from YouTube Live Control Room into the stream-key field, then apply the settings.
  3. Before a public broadcast, run a test stream with audio and on-screen motion similar to the real event. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream health and status messages while the test is running. Check for dropped frames, encoding overload, audio problems, and an unstable connection; adjust the encoder, bitrate, or workload and test again if needed.
  5. Start the broadcast from OBS and confirm in Live Control Room that the incoming stream is healthy before sharing it with viewers.

Know the 4K latency limitation

At 4K/2160p, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; streams are set to normal latency. If rapid chat interaction is central to your broadcast, account for the longer delay when choosing this resolution.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • YouTube does not show 4K60: Confirm OBS’s output resolution is 3840×2160 and FPS is 60, and that the source itself can deliver those settings. Check that you used the stream-key workflow rather than the OBS direct setup path described as not supporting 4K.
  • Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Check upload capacity and network stability, then lower the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. Retest with representative game motion and audio.
  • OBS reports encoding overload or the stream cannot maintain 60 fps: Check system load and encoder performance during the actual workload. Try another supported H.264 encoder if available, reduce competing load, and repeat the test; no encoder choice is universally best across unspecified hardware.
  • The video looks soft or blocky: Verify that the output is actually 3840×2160, then review the bitrate against the current regional YouTube recommendation and your upload headroom. A bitrate that the connection cannot sustain may cause a less reliable stream rather than improving it.
  • YouTube does not accept the stream key: Confirm the key was copied from the correct stream in Live Control Room and that OBS is using the stream-key method. Replace or reset the key in YouTube if it has been exposed.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Before streaming gameplay, music, or other material, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the content you broadcast. A successful technical setup does not establish that a broadcast is permitted under copyright law or YouTube’s channel policies. Review YouTube’s current rules for copyrighted content and monetization before relying on reused material; a stream key and healthy signal do not guarantee that a video or channel will remain available or eligible for monetization.
