How to Configure OBS Reconnect Delay for a YouTube Loop on Indian Broadband

Enable OBS Automatically Reconnect in Settings → Advanced, then choose a starting retry delay and maximum attempts based on your observed connection drops.

In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, then set a positive Retry Delay and a Maximum Retries count. The delay is the starting wait, not a fixed interval: OBS doubles the wait after each failed retry. There is no official delay value for Indian broadband; choose settings based on your connection’s observed drops and how long you can tolerate an interruption.

Set OBS to retry a dropped YouTube output

  1. In OBS Studio, select Settings → Advanced.
  2. Find Automatically Reconnect and enable it.
  3. Set Retry Delay to a positive number of seconds and choose Maximum Retries to reflect how long you are willing to wait for recovery.
  4. Apply the settings, then test a stream and observe how OBS behaves when the connection drops. Confirm the labels and available controls in your installed OBS version.

OBS describes the delay as the initial wait before retrying, with the wait doubling on each subsequent attempt. That means later attempts are spaced farther apart; the setting does not make OBS retry at the same interval indefinitely. A retry count of zero disables reconnecting. Choose values from the outage pattern, not the country

No official OBS or YouTube guidance establishes an ideal retry delay for Indian broadband or for every always-on loop. Shorter starting waits can make early retries happen sooner, while longer waits space out the first attempt. More maximum retries allow more attempts, but they cannot restore service during an extended outage. Since the wait doubles, test the actual recovery sequence instead of assuming a setting gives you evenly spaced retries.

Decide how much interruption your channel can tolerate, then test under the conditions in which you actually stream. A retry setting is recovery behavior—not a remedy for an unstable connection or a guarantee that YouTube will keep a broadcast active through every drop.

Check upload stability and stream health

Measure outbound capacity

Use a reliable measurement of upload capacity; download speed alone does not tell you whether your encoder can sustain its outbound feed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom in available outbound bandwidth. If you use a backup stream, include its bandwidth as well as the primary stream when accounting for capacity. This is general YouTube guidance, not an India-specific connection statistic. YouTube: Streaming tips

Match bitrate to the connection and output

Select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec, using YouTube’s published encoder-setting recommendations as a guide. The right row depends on your actual output mode; there is no single bitrate that fits every loop or connection. Test before going live and monitor stream health while it runs. Watch OBS’s output indicators

Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network problem between your computer and the remote ingest server. An unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain can cause them. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends checking bitrate stability and other network conditions. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting

Troubleshoot repeated drops

  • You are streaming over Wi-Fi: If possible, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A cable can help only if your computer and router have compatible Ethernet ports; it cannot fix an ISP outage or a YouTube ingest problem. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
  • Dropped frames continue: Check whether the selected bitrate remains stable and is within the capacity of your upload connection. Reduce it if the connection cannot sustain it, taking the corresponding picture-quality trade-off into account. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
  • Other network factors may be interfering: OBS’s diagnostic guidance includes checking VPN or security software interference, bundled network-optimization utilities, drivers and other network conditions. Investigate these one at a time so you can tell whether a change helps. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
  • You consider dynamic bitrate: OBS notes that it may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying cause and can lower quality. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
  • The connection remains down: Retries cannot reconnect to an unreachable network or ingest endpoint. Restore the underlying connection and check the stream’s status in YouTube before relying on the loop again.

Protect the YouTube stream key

A YouTube stream key lets your encoder send its feed to your live stream, so treat it like a password. Keep it private. If you reset a compromised key in YouTube’s Live Control Room, update the key in OBS; the old key will no longer be the one to use. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
