First find out whether the playlist timeline is drifting or YouTube playback is merely delayed. Check a local recording or output sample against the source files, then compare it with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. If the local output is already out of sync, investigate file durations, stream compatibility, and timestamps before changing network or ingest settings. Without your command, file metadata, and a local comparison, there is no reliable way to identify one root cause.
Identify what “out of sync” means
Note exactly what happens and when. Does each next video start later than scheduled, does a transition jump or leave a gap, does audio gradually separate from picture, or is the viewer-facing stream simply behind? Also record whether the issue begins at one particular file or loop boundary, or accumulates across the playlist. These symptoms point to different parts of the pipeline.
- Late or misplaced playlist items: inspect the concat timeline and each file’s duration.
- A jump, gap, or artifact at a transition: compare stream layouts, timestamps, and durations on both sides of that transition.
- Audio gradually separating from video: compare audio and video timing in the local output first.
- Only viewer playback is delayed: distinguish stream latency from a playlist clock problem; delay by itself does not show that FFmpeg’s schedule is drifting.
Check the playlist files and concat timeline
The FFmpeg concat demuxer reads files sequentially as though their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts where the previous one ends. It uses each file’s duration to place the next one; if that duration is wrong, the next start time can be wrong too. FFmpeg warns that an incorrect duration can cause artifacts. Inspect every input
Compare the files’ stream count and types, codecs, time bases, frame rates, audio sample rates, start timestamps, and reported durations. Check reported duration against the actual media, especially for truncated files or files whose duration may have been estimated. The concat demuxer requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A playlist containing a file with no audio, a different stream layout, or incompatible timing characteristics may fail or show artifacts at a transition.

Correct known duration errors; do not guess
The concat demuxer supports a duration directive to override a file’s stored duration. Use it only when you have established the actual duration from the media. A guessed value can simply replace one timing error with another. If the inputs do not meet the concat compatibility requirements, prepare them to a consistent stream layout and timing format before concatenating. There is no universal conversion command for every mix of source files.
Keep pacing separate from timestamp repair
-re reads input at its native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. It can pace prerecorded input for real-time output, but it does not repair bad duration metadata or timestamps. Adding it will not fix an incorrectly placed playlist item.

Timestamp options also need to match the problem. -copyts preserves input timestamps rather than sanitizing them; -start_at_zero, when used with -copyts, shifts timestamps. Output timestamps may still be affected by frame-rate mode or muxer processing. Do not add timestamp flags blindly or stack them as a generic sync fix. Check the options against your actual command and FFmpeg version using the FFmpeg documentation.
Compare local output with YouTube playback
- Capture or monitor the local output. Check whether picture and audio are synchronized and whether playlist transitions occur at the expected times.
- If the local output is wrong, focus on source metadata, stream compatibility, concat durations, and timestamp handling. Recheck the affected files and transition after correcting a confirmed issue.
- If the local output is synchronized, compare YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then investigate encoder ingest and the outbound connection rather than assuming the playlist clock is wrong.
- Check the encoder and archive. YouTube recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder, reviewing dashboard errors and CPU load, inspecting the local archive, and testing outbound internet quality. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Verify YouTube’s ingest settings
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). Its encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s live error guidance says intervals above 4 seconds can cause buffering and specifies closed GOP for optimal transcoding. These are compatibility and stream-health checks; they do not, by themselves, diagnose a playlist duration or timestamp error.

Do not treat one bitrate as right for every stream. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the applicable values in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and follow any relevant error message in Live streaming error messages.
Check upload headroom and monitor the stream
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, and advises continuous monitoring of audio and video quality. This is an operational recommendation, not proof that bandwidth caused timeline drift. Test the outbound connection if the local output is good but YouTube reports stream-health problems.
