The three settings that must agree are the server block’s root, fastcgi_pass, and SCRIPT_FILENAME; a mismatch usually produces a 404 or 502 Bad Gateway.

How the Nginx–PHP-FPM connection works
Nginx does not execute PHP itself. It handles TLS termination (when configured), static assets, connection management, and routing. A location block catches requests whose names end in .php and sends them using FastCGI to PHP-FPM. PHP-FPM starts or reuses a worker, executes the script, and returns the response to Nginx.
The hand-off has four dependencies:
- Document root: Nginx must point at the directory that actually contains the application’s PHP files.
- Pool listener:
fastcgi_passmust exactly match the pool’slisten =value. - Script path:
SCRIPT_FILENAMEmust resolve to the requested file beneath that document root. - Socket access: the Nginx worker must be able to open the Unix socket, or the TCP listener must accept the connection.
PHP’s FPM documentation describes listen as mandatory; it can be a Unix socket, a port, or an IP address and port. Nginx’s SCRIPT_FILENAME parameter is the value PHP uses to determine the script name.

Check the VPS before installing anything
Use the package manager and service conventions for your distribution rather than copying an old tutorial’s PHP version or service name. Debian and Ubuntu commonly place pools below /etc/php/<version>/fpm/pool.d/; other distributions commonly use /etc/php-fpm.d/. Socket names also differ between versions.
Confirm the operating system and available privileges
- Use a user that can run
sudoor log in as root for package installation and service changes. - Know the absolute document root, such as
/var/www/example, and ensure the directory is readable and traversable by the Nginx worker. - Plan a hostname and, for a production site, TLS, firewall rules, operating-system updates, least-privilege ownership, and a safe method for storing application secrets.
Install Nginx and PHP-FPM
On a Debian-based system, the package is generally named php-fpm. Install Nginx and that distribution package with the system package manager. On systems using DNF, the corresponding package is also commonly named php-fpm. Your repository may provide a versioned package instead.

Configure the PHP-FPM pool
FPM pool files use PHP’s ini-style syntax. The pool usually named www is a reasonable starting point for one site, but separate pools can isolate sites or applications.
Choose a local Unix socket
For Nginx and PHP-FPM on the same VPS, a Unix socket avoids exposing a network listener and is the safer default. In the pool file, set a socket path and permissions that match the account running Nginx:

listen.mode = 0660The version and user names above are examples. Use the path reported by your installed pool and the Nginx worker account used by your distribution. You can find that account in the main Nginx configuration, commonly in a user directive. A socket mode of 0660 allows the owner and group to connect without making the endpoint world-accessible.
Use TCP only when the topology requires it
TCP is useful when Nginx and FPM are on different hosts or when you deliberately separate them, but it creates a network endpoint that must be restricted. For a same-host TCP arrangement, bind the pool to loopback, for example:

listen.allowed_clients = 127.0.0.1Do not bind FPM to a public address. PHP’s documentation states that an exposed FastCGI endpoint allows arbitrary code execution, and that PHP-FPM must not be reachable from an untrusted network. If a split-host design is unavoidable, use private networking and firewall rules in addition to the FPM client allow-list.
Keep executable extensions narrow
Set security.limit_extensions to the PHP extensions your application actually uses. This protects against a web-server routing mistake causing another file type to be executed as PHP. Do not broaden the list merely because an application contains files with other extensions; add only documented, required PHP extensions.
Review pool process settings
FPM also controls process management, logging, slow-request logging, and status features per pool. Leave those settings at distribution defaults until the site works, then tune them from measurements and logs rather than from a universal recipe.
Create the Nginx server block
Place a server block in the location your distribution includes, such as a sites-enabled directory or an Nginx configuration include directory. The following pattern assumes the document root is /var/www/example and that the pool listener discovered earlier is a Unix socket.

}Replace example.test, the document root, and the socket with your values. The socket path after unix: must be byte-for-byte identical to the pool’s listen = line. For a TCP pool, use a value such as fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; instead.
Why each PHP directive is present
try_files $uri =404;prevents Nginx from forwarding a request for a file that does not exist below the document root. It is an important defense against accidental script execution.include fastcgi_params;supplies the request metadata FPM needs. The distribution’sfastcgi_paramsorfastcgi.confshould include the request method, content type, and content length required for POST requests.fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;combines the configured root with the URI-derived script name. If your distribution’s include already defines this parameter, keep one correct definition rather than creating conflicting values.fastcgi_passselects the FPM socket or TCP endpoint. It does not select a PHP version by itself; the pool listening at that endpoint does.
Keep the PHP location below the general location in the same server block and check that another included file is not overriding it. Never pass every request to FPM: images, stylesheets, JavaScript, and downloads should remain static responses.
Apply changes safely
- Check file ownership and traversal. The Nginx worker needs execute permission on each parent directory and read permission for the PHP file. The application should not make the entire tree writable by the web user.
- Test Nginx syntax.
sudo nginx -tContinue only when the command reports a successful test. It catches missing semicolons, invalid includes, and malformed directives without interrupting the running service.
- Reload Nginx.
sudo systemctl reload nginxA reload applies a valid server-block change without unnecessarily dropping existing connections.
- Apply the pool configuration. Restart or reload the service name discovered earlier. Examples include
php8.3-fpmon some Debian-based systems andphp-fpmon some other distributions; use the actual unit on your VPS:sudo systemctl restart php8.3-fpm # or, where that is the installed unit: sudo systemctl restart php-fpm - Check service state.
sudo systemctl status nginx sudo systemctl status php8.3-fpmSubstitute the real FPM unit name and inspect its journal if it failed to start.
- Run a temporary end-to-end test. Create a file inside the configured document root:

Diagnose common failures
502 Bad Gateway
A 502 means Nginx could not obtain a valid response from the configured upstream. Check these causes in order:
- Wrong socket or port: compare
fastcgi_passwith the active pool’slisten =line. A version change can leave Nginx pointing at an old filename. - FPM is stopped or failed: inspect
systemctl statusand the service journal. A syntax error in the pool file prevents startup. - Socket permissions: verify that the socket exists and that its owner, group, and mode permit the Nginx worker to connect. Correct
listen.owner,listen.group, andlisten.mode, then restart or reload FPM so the socket is recreated. - Wrong TCP binding: ensure Nginx uses the same address and port as FPM and that a local firewall or security policy is not blocking it.
Read the Nginx error log and the FPM pool log for the exact upstream error. Do not enable diagnostic output in a public response as a substitute for log inspection.

404 from try_files
This normally means the requested script is not below the server block’s root, the URI is misspelled, or a different server block handled the request. Confirm the real file path, hostname, and active configuration. Check that SCRIPT_FILENAME expands to the same path you can see on disk.

The page downloads PHP source or shows the wrong site
Nginx is serving the request as a static file when the PHP location did not match, or the request reached a different server block. Confirm the location ~ .php$ expression, the requested hostname, and the output of nginx -T (which prints the fully expanded configuration) before reloading a corrected file.
POST requests fail while simple PHP works
Check that the FastCGI include supplies request method, content type, and content length. A custom minimal parameter list that omits those values can break form submissions even though a simple echo test succeeds.
Secure the deployment beyond basic wiring
- Keep FPM private. Prefer a Unix socket on one VPS. If TCP is used, bind it to a private or loopback address, set
listen.allowed_clients, and enforce host firewall rules. Never expose port 9000 (or another FPM port) to the internet. - Use least privilege. Let the application own only the directories it must write, and let the Nginx worker read code without granting it broad write access. Socket access should be limited to the Nginx account or a dedicated group.
- Limit PHP execution. Keep
security.limit_extensionsrestricted and use thetry_filescheck so nonexistent paths are never sent to FPM. - Protect secrets. Store credentials outside publicly served directories, restrict file permissions, and avoid printing environment variables or configuration contents in error pages.
- Use TLS and updates. Put the site behind HTTPS, maintain the operating system and PHP packages, and apply firewall rules before treating the VPS as production-ready.
- Log deliberately. Configure Nginx access/error logs and FPM pool logs, and consider a slow log for diagnosing expensive requests without exposing internals to visitors.
Choose Unix sockets or TCP deliberately

Neither transport fixes an incorrect script path. In both cases, the endpoint and SCRIPT_FILENAME must describe the same application.
Tune FPM only after measuring

Set pm.max_children from memory, not folklore
Each PHP worker consumes memory based on the application and request. Leave headroom for the operating system, Nginx, databases, caches, and other services. Measure resident memory under representative traffic, then choose a conservative maximum that does not push the VPS into swapping. There is no safe universal worker count or guaranteed performance gain.

Nginx’s fastcgi_read_timeout controls how long Nginx waits between successive reads from FPM. Increase it only for endpoints known to be slow, such as large exports or background-like web requests, and investigate the underlying query or job before making a broad timeout change. Some applications, including Nextcloud deployments, document optional timeout adjustments for slow PHP responses; use the application’s own guidance alongside your measured logs.
Production checklist
- PHP-FPM and Nginx were installed from the VPS distribution’s supported repositories.
- The active PHP version, FPM service unit, pool file, and
listenvalue were inspected rather than guessed. fastcgi_passexactly matches that listener.- The server block’s
rootcontains the application, andSCRIPT_FILENAMEresolves beneath it. - The PHP location includes a
try_filesexistence check and the distribution’s FastCGI parameters. - The FPM socket is local and restricted, or a TCP listener is private, allow-listed, and firewalled.
- Nginx syntax passed
nginx -tbefore reload, and the matching FPM service was restarted or reloaded after pool edits. - A temporary PHP test returned the expected result and was removed.
- Nginx and FPM logs are available for troubleshooting, while diagnostic output and secrets remain private.
- TLS, updates, firewall rules, file permissions, backups, and application-specific hardening are in place before public launch.
Bottom line
Most Nginx/PHP-FPM problems are alignment problems: the wrong pool socket, an inaccessible socket, or a script filename that does not exist under the configured root. Discover the values on the VPS, make the server block match them exactly, validate before reloading, and keep the FPM endpoint unreachable from untrusted networks.
