What Arma 3 RCon does
RCon is the remote-console interface exposed by BattlEye. It lets an administrator connect from another computer and issue server-management commands without opening the game’s console locally. The interface is separate from the normal player connection, but it depends on BattlEye being active.

You need administrative access to the Arma 3 server’s files, permission to edit its startup or configuration files, and the ability to restart the process. You also need an RCon client such as BattleWarden or BERCon. A client does not create RCon access by itself; the server must first load a valid BattlEye configuration.
Check these items before editing
- Executable: determine whether the server launches the 64-bit Arma 3 executable. That determines whether the file is named
beserver_x64.cfgorbeserver.cfg. - Server version: the Bohemia Interactive wiki identifies the
RConPortsetting as applying to Arma 3 update 1.58.135656 and later. Older builds and guides can describe different BattlEye behavior. - File access: make a backup of
server.cfgand any existing BattlEye configuration before changing them. - Port plan: choose a UDP port that is not used by the game, another Arma instance, a management service, or a host control panel.
- Network access: if the server is behind a firewall, security group, or router, be prepared to allow the selected RCon UDP port.
Step 1: Enable BattlEye in server.cfg
RCon will not answer if BattlEye is disabled. Open the server’s main server.cfg and set its BattlEye option to enabled. On installations using the usual Arma 3 syntax, this appears as:

BattlEye = 1;
Keep the spelling and punctuation style already used by your host’s template. Save the file, but do not assume the change is live until the server has been restarted. If your host exposes a BattlEye checkbox instead of the file, enable that option and verify that it writes the equivalent setting.
Step 2: Create the BattlEye configuration file
RCon settings belong in the BattlEye folder, normally inside the Arma 3 server directory. The filename must match the executable that actually runs.

64-bit server
For a server launched with the x64 executable, create or edit:
battleye/beserver_x64.cfg
Other server executable
For a server that uses the non-x64 executable, use:
battleye/beserver.cfg
Use the path conventions of your operating system and hosting panel. The important details are the battleye directory and the exact filename. A correctly edited file in a different directory can appear to have no effect because the running process never reads it.
Step 3: Add RConPassword and RConPort
Open the matching BattlEye file in a plain-text editor. Add one setting per line. A minimal configuration is:

RConPassword choose-a-long-password-here
RConPort 2310
RConPassword is the secret that the RCon client must provide. RConPort is the UDP port on which BattlEye listens for RCon traffic. The values are examples: replace the password and confirm that the port is free on your machine and network.
The BattlEye configuration format uses a key followed by a value. Do not copy the semicolon style from server.cfg into this file unless your existing BattlEye template specifically requires it. Preserve any unrelated settings already present.
Password format and handling
A hosting-tool page advises using only letters and numbers because, according to that page, punctuation can confuse the BattlEye parser. That precaution is not confirmed by the Bohemia Interactive wiki or the forum reports, so treat it as a compatibility measure rather than a documented Arma 3 requirement. A long, unique alphanumeric password is the least surprising choice and avoids shell, panel, or parser escaping problems.
Do not reuse the password for the operating-system account, game-panel login, database, or another service. Store it in your administrator password manager and do not paste it into public support posts or screenshots.

Optional MaxPing setting
The Bohemia Interactive wiki’s minimal example places MaxPing in the same file as the RCon settings. It is not required for RCon authentication. Add it only if you intentionally want BattlEye to enforce a ping limit, and use the value already chosen for your server policy.
Step 4: Restart and confirm which file loaded
Stop the Arma 3 server cleanly, save the configuration, and start it again. A restart is necessary because the running BattlEye process may have already read its configuration.

Watch the server’s startup log or console for BattlEye initialization. The exact log wording varies by server build and host, so the useful checks are that BattlEye starts, the process does not report a malformed configuration, and no other service is already bound to the selected port.
Handle beserver_active files
Community reports describe BattlEye renaming a configuration to a file beginning with beserver_active while the server is running. If an old beserver_active... file remains after the server has been stopped, it can take precedence over the file you just edited and make the server load stale credentials or a stale port.
- Stop the server completely and verify that no Arma or BattlEye process remains.
- Back up any
beserver_active...file for diagnosis. - Remove the stale active file only while the server is stopped.
- Confirm that the intended
beserver_x64.cfgorbeserver.cfgcontains the current password and port. - Start the server and check the logs again.
Do not delete files while the process is running; BattlEye may recreate or rename them during normal operation.
Step 5: Select a safe RCon port
Arma 3’s game networking uses a group of nearby ports. Community forum reports commonly identify 2302 through 2305 as the reserved range; other reports include 2306, and a Bohemia Interactive developer note is reported to place BattlEye traffic on a separate default port of 2306. Avoiding 2302–2306 is therefore the conservative choice.
| Port guidance | What it means | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| 2302–2305 | Commonly reported game-port range | Do not use for RCon. |
| 2306 | Reported in community discussions as a BattlEye-related default or separate port | Leave it unused unless you have verified your build and layout. |
| Game port + 4 | Suggested by one hosting guide | Use only after checking that the resulting port is free and outside the reserved range. |
| Increment by 10 per server | Suggested by a Steam guide for multiple servers | It is an allocation convention, not a universal BattlEye requirement. |
| Explicit independent port | Another tool page describes RConPort as independent of the game port |
Choose a free port deliberately and document it. |
These recommendations conflict because Arma 3 builds, hosting layouts, and multi-server installations differ. The reliable rule is to set an explicit, unused port and keep it clear of 2302–2306. For example, 2310 can be a reasonable candidate if a port check confirms that no process or second server uses it; it is not a guaranteed default.
Multiple Arma 3 servers on one machine
Every instance needs its own game-port allocation and its own RCon port. Do not give two instances the same RConPort, even if they use different profiles. Write down a mapping such as “instance A — game ports 2302–2305 — RCon 2310” and choose a different, verified port for instance B. If a launch script calculates ports automatically, inspect its result rather than assuming a formula from an older guide.

Step 6: Open the firewall and hosting-network rules
A correct file does not help if packets are blocked before they reach BattlEye. A forum report specifically advises opening the relevant UDP ports. At minimum, allow inbound UDP traffic for the RCon port you selected in the server’s operating-system firewall, cloud security group, router forwarding rule, and hosting panel firewall, where each layer exists.
- Create a rule for the exact RCon UDP port instead of opening an entire port range.
- Restrict the source addresses to trusted administrator networks when your firewall supports allowlists.
- Keep the normal game-port rules separate; changing them can disrupt player connections.
- After saving a rule, test from a network outside the server’s LAN if remote administration is required.
Arma 3 RCon has no established universal TCP requirement. Do not open additional protocols merely because another game’s RCon documentation mentions them; follow the transport shown by your server host and BattlEye logs.
Step 7: Connect an RCon client
Install an RCon client such as BattleWarden or BERCon on the administrator’s computer. Create a connection using:
- Server address: the public IP address or DNS name reachable from the administrator’s network. Use the internal address only when connecting from the same private network.
- RCon port: the exact number in
RConPort, not the Arma game port. - Password: the exact value in
RConPassword, including capitalization.
Save the connection and connect after the server has fully started. A successful connection should show the server’s BattlEye console or command interface. If the client reports a timeout, work through the network and port checks below; if it reports an authentication failure, verify the loaded file and password before changing firewall rules.
Diagnose common RCon failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate refusal or no BattlEye console | BattlEye is disabled or did not start | Enable BattlEye in server.cfg, restart, and inspect startup output. |
| Client times out | Wrong address, blocked UDP port, port collision, or server not listening | Confirm the public address, verify the selected port is forwarded and allowed, and check that another process is not using it. |
| Authentication fails | Wrong password or a different config file was loaded | Stop the server, inspect the matching executable’s config, remove a stale active file, and restart. |
| Connection works locally but not remotely | Router, cloud security group, or host firewall blocks inbound traffic | Allow the RCon UDP port at every network layer and test from an external network. |
| Players connect, but RCon does not | RCon is using the game port, or the RCon port was never opened | Use the number in RConPort; do not substitute 2302, and open the separate RCon rule. |
| Changes appear ignored | Wrong filename, wrong directory, stale beserver_active... file, or no restart |
Stop the process, verify the executable and path, remove the stale active file, and restart. |
| Several servers interfere with one another | Duplicate game or RCon ports | Assign and document unique ports for every instance, then restart each instance. |
Do not test on port 2302
One forum user attempted to connect to 2302, which is used by the game. That test cannot prove that RCon is configured correctly. Always enter the dedicated RCon port from the BattlEye file in the client.
Check the effective configuration, not just the edited file
When troubleshooting, compare four values: the executable type, the BattlEye directory, the active filename, and the port shown in the client. A text editor can show a correct value while the running process is reading a renamed or different file. Perform the comparison with the server stopped so that file renaming does not change the result during inspection.

About the optional BattlEye-folder launch parameter
One hosting guide recommends adding a launch parameter that points the server at its BattlEye folder when the server does not load the expected configuration. This advice comes from a single hosting guide and is not confirmed by the Bohemia Interactive wiki. Treat it as a host-specific fallback, not a standard requirement.
Before adding any parameter, verify the executable, profile path, BattlEye directory, and startup command supplied by your host. Ask the host which parameter its current launcher supports, then test with a backup and inspect the startup log. An incorrect path can make diagnosis harder by causing the server to read a second configuration tree.

The wiki’s RConPort note applies to update 1.58.135656 and later. A forum thread discusses RCon changes after builds identified as 158.135170, illustrating why an old tutorial may not match a current server. If you are migrating from an old installation, do not carry forward assumptions that RCon must be tied to the game port or that a legacy filename is still authoritative.
- Record the current Arma 3 build and executable architecture.
- Back up the old BattlEye files before upgrading.
- Recheck the active filename after the first post-upgrade start.
- Confirm that the chosen RCon port remains free and outside 2302–2306.
- Test with the actual RCon client before declaring the migration complete.
Operational security recommendations
RCon provides powerful administrative access, so treat its port and password as management credentials rather than ordinary game settings.
- Use a unique, long password and change it if it appears in a log, ticket, screenshot, or shared configuration.
- Allow inbound traffic only from administrator addresses where practical.
- Do not publish the RCon port and password together in a public mod, mission, or server listing.
- Keep a written record of which RCon port belongs to each server instance.
- Remove temporary firewall exceptions after testing.
- Review server and BattlEye logs after the first connection and after any unexplained disconnects.
- Give RCon access only to people who need remote administration.
Configuration checklist
- BattlEye is enabled in
server.cfg. - The file name matches the executable:
beserver_x64.cfgfor x64 orbeserver.cfgotherwise. - The file is inside the server’s
battleyedirectory. RConPasswordandRConPortare present, with one setting per line.- The selected port is free, unique to this instance, and outside 2302–2306.
- Any stale
beserver_active...file has been handled while the server was stopped. - The server has been restarted and BattlEye starts without a configuration error.
- The firewall or hosting security group allows the selected RCon UDP port.
- The client uses the server address, RCon port, and exact password.
Once all nine checks pass, RCon should be available without changing the normal player game-port configuration. If it is still unreachable, compare the effective active file and the network path in that order; those two checks distinguish most configuration errors from firewall failures.
