Vintage Story uses roles as permission bundles and privileges as the individual abilities inside those bundles. New players normally receive the suplayer role. To make a player an administrator, run /op <playername> from the console or as an authorized administrator; this is an alias for /player <playername> role admin. Assign another role with /player <username> role <rolename>, and change a role’s permissions with /role <rolename> privilege grant <privilegename> or revoke.

This guide explains the complete workflow, including restrictive visitor defaults, offline players, role-wide versus one-player permissions, verification, role metadata, and recovery when a command does not behave as expected.

How Vintage Story’s permission model works
A player’s effective access is assembled from two layers. The first is the player’s role, such as suvisitor, suplayer, sumod or admin. A role is a reusable policy: every player assigned to it receives the role’s privileges and other role settings. The second layer contains privileges granted directly to one player. Those individual grants sit on top of the role, so a player can receive one extra ability without being moved into a broader role.
Use a role when several people should follow the same policy. Use a player-specific privilege for a temporary helper, a trusted builder, or another one-off exception. Removing the player’s direct privilege later does not alter the role they still have.

Role changes are applied without a server restart in normal operation. If a particular release or host panel behaves differently, use the server’s command help and confirm the result with the listing commands described below.
Prepare the server before changing permissions
Use the console or an account that already has authority
On a fresh dedicated server, the safest first step is to use the server console. You may then grant your own account the administrator role and perform later changes in-game. A normal survival player cannot manage privileges, so attempting administrative commands from an unprivileged account will fail even if that account can join and play.

Back up the configuration
Make a copy of serverconfig.json before editing it. Stop the server before changing the file when possible; a running process can rewrite configuration when it shuts down and overwrite manual edits. If your setup permits live editing, make the backup first and restart only if the server version or host panel requires it.
Confirm the exact names used by your installation
Role and privilege names are case-sensitive in practice. Type the role and privilege exactly as they appear in your installation’s command help or configuration. Do not assume that every release contains the same stock roles: published guides describe different default sets, and a host or administrator may have added or removed entries.
Choose the default role for new players
New joiners receive the role identified by DefaultRoleCode in serverconfig.json. The normal survival-player default is suplayer. If you want every newcomer to be restricted until you approve them, set the value to suvisitor.
Inside the JSON object, the setting should look like this:
"DefaultRoleCode": "suvisitor",Keep both quotation marks and the trailing comma when another property follows it. JSON is strict: a missing quote, an extra comma in the wrong place, or a value outside the object can prevent the server from loading the file. If you select suvisitor, existing players keep their current roles; the setting controls players who are assigned the default when they join or are otherwise given the default role.

A practical visitor workflow
- Stop the server or open its console according to your installation’s procedure.
- Back up
serverconfig.json. - Change
DefaultRoleCodetosuvisitor, preserving valid JSON. - Start the server and join with your administrator account.
- Assign approved players the role you want them to use, normally
suplayerfor survival play.
A visitor default is useful for private communities and application-based servers because an unknown account cannot immediately build or use every survival function. It also creates an administrative task: every approved player must be assigned an appropriate role.
Make the first administrator
Use the /op alias
From the dedicated-server console, run:
/op <yourname>Replace <yourname> with the player name exactly as the server knows it. The command is an alias for:
/player <yourname> role adminOn a new server, whitelist and op your own account from the console before relying on in-game administration. This avoids a circular problem in which no connected player has enough authority to grant the first administrative role.

Check that the promotion took effect
Reconnect if your client does not immediately refresh the displayed status, then run the privilege and role listing commands. If the account still behaves like a survival player, check spelling, capitalization, the server console output, and whether you issued the command on the intended server instance.
Assign a role to a player
The role assignment command works for players who are online and, on supported versions, for players who are offline:
/player <username> role <rolename>For example, to return a player named Alex to the standard survival role, use:
/player alex role suplayerTo make Alex a visitor instead, use:
/player alex role suvisitorReplace the example names with the exact account name, not a nickname shown only in chat. If a name contains spaces or unusual characters, follow the quoting rules shown by your server’s command help rather than improvising syntax.

What a role change does
Changing a role replaces the player’s role-level policy. It does not permanently convert the account into an administrator, and it does not necessarily remove every direct player privilege that was granted separately. Review both layers when you are revoking access from a former moderator: assign the least-privileged role you want and remove any direct privileges that should no longer remain.
Grant or revoke a privilege for an entire role
Role-wide permission changes use this form:
/role <rolename> privilege grant <privilegename>To remove the same permission, change grant to revoke:
/role <rolename> privilege revoke <privilegename>For example, if your installation exposes a privilege named someprivilege and you want every member of sumod to receive it, run:
/role sumod privilege grant someprivilegeUse the exact privilege identifier reported by your version. The command changes the role, so it affects every current and future player assigned to that role. It is therefore safer to create or select a narrowly scoped moderator role than to add experimental permissions to a broad survival role.
Role policy versus individual exception

Player-specific privilege syntax has varied in guides and may differ by game version. Do not copy an unverified command from a different release. On your server, use the built-in help for player and privilege commands, apply the grant to the named account, and then verify the result with the listing commands. The principle is consistent even when the exact command spelling changes: a direct player grant stacks on the role instead of replacing it.
Verify roles and privileges
After any change, verify the server’s stored state rather than relying only on a client-side icon or a successful chat message. The command references commonly expose:
/list privilegesto display available privileges and their descriptions or assignments./list roleto display roles and their configuration.
Command names and output formatting can drift between releases, so use the spelling shown by /help if your build reports an unknown command. Check three things separately:

- The player is assigned to the intended role.
- The role contains the privilege you meant to grant or no longer contains the one you revoked.
- No direct player privilege is silently preserving access after a role change.
Test with a non-administrator account whenever possible. An administrator can often perform an action regardless of the permission you are trying to test, which can make a faulty role appear correct.

Roles can contain more than permission flags. Depending on the version and configuration, a role entry may define a display name, chat colour, spawn point, a per-player land-claim volume allowance measured in cubic metres, and a game-mode code. These settings are role properties, so moving a player between roles can change their presentation and gameplay rules as well as their commands.

Use the codes exactly as your installed configuration defines them. A creative or spectator mode is a major gameplay change, not merely an administrative permission, so keep those modes in dedicated roles and assign them deliberately. Likewise, review claim-volume allowances when promoting or demoting players: a role can change the amount of land a player is allowed to protect even if its privilege list stays the same.
Default roles and privilege levels: avoid unsafe assumptions
There is no reliable single list of stock roles for every Vintage Story release and hosting environment. Some documentation describes nine defaults, including limited survival and creative variants, while other documentation lists only four basic survival and creative roles. Your serverconfig.json and the command output on the running server are authoritative for that installation.
Privilege-level numbers are also described inconsistently. One explanation treats values such as -1, 0, 200 and 99999 as command-rank tiers; another describes a level as the threshold for building in protected areas. Because those interpretations conflict, do not infer a player’s capabilities from a numeric level alone. Inspect the role’s actual privileges and test the protected-area behaviour you care about.

“Unknown command” or “not enough privilege”
- Run the command from the dedicated-server console, where the initial administrator can be established.
- Confirm that you are on the correct server instance and using the command syntax exposed by that version’s
/help. - Check that the account issuing the command is actually assigned to
adminor another role authorized to manage roles. - Use the exact role and privilege identifiers shown by the server; do not substitute display names for internal codes.
The player can join but cannot build
Check whether the player is still suvisitor. A restrictive default intentionally limits new accounts until you assign a playable role. Run /player <username> role suplayer, then reconnect or retest in a normal survival area. If building still fails, inspect land claims and protected-area rules separately; a survival role does not automatically override another player’s protection.
The player remains powerful after demotion
Changing the role may not remove a direct player privilege. Inspect the player’s individual grants and revoke the exceptional privilege using the player-privilege command documented by your version. Also check whether the replacement role itself contains the ability through a role-wide grant.

The edited configuration prevents startup
Restore the backup, validate the JSON punctuation, and confirm that DefaultRoleCode is inside the correct object. The value must be quoted, and a comma belongs after it only when another property follows. Once the server starts, make the role change through commands where possible so future edits are less likely to corrupt the file.
A role change appears delayed
Role changes normally do not require a restart. Have the affected player reconnect, refresh the client, and test again. If the change still does not appear, verify the assignment with /list role and inspect the console log for a rejected command. A restart should be a troubleshooting step for a version-specific problem, not the first response to every role edit.

Safer administration practices
Keep administrator membership small
The admin role should be reserved for people who can recover the server, alter its configuration, and manage other permissions. Give moderators a separate role containing only the privileges they need. This limits the damage from an account compromise and makes it easier to audit who can change policy.
Use staged roles for approval-based servers
A practical arrangement is a restrictive visitor role for newcomers, a survival role for approved players, a moderator role for trusted helpers, and an administrator role for the owner or operators. Record which privileges distinguish those roles, then test each one with a separate account. Avoid granting a privilege to suplayer merely because one person needs it; that would silently grant it to every survival player.
Document exceptions
When you grant a direct player privilege, record the reason and intended expiry. Direct grants are easy to forget because they are not visible from the role policy alone. During an access review, compare the player’s role, direct privileges, game mode, claim allowance, and spawn settings as a single profile.

Run these from the console or an account with sufficient authority. If your build rejects a command, consult its built-in help because the official role-command page and third-party instructions may lag behind the version you are running.
