Configure Sensu by installing the RabbitMQ and Redis runtime assets, assigning matching subscriptions to the agents that can reach each service, and creating CheckConfig resources that call the asset binaries. The Sensu backend schedules those checks; the local agent executes them and returns an event whose exit status becomes OK, WARNING, CRITICAL, or an unknown/custom state. Add metric checks to a pipeline when you need time-series dashboards rather than alert status alone.

How Sensu monitoring works
A Sensu deployment has three relevant parts. The backend stores CheckConfig resources and schedules published checks. Each agent registers as an entity, advertises subscriptions, runs matching checks on its own host, and publishes the resulting event. A check is therefore executed only when its subscription matches one of the agent’s subscriptions.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a host-local RabbitMQ or Redis instance, install the agent on that host so the check can use the local network namespace, socket, credentials, and TLS trust store. For a remote endpoint, use a proxy entity or a dedicated monitoring agent with network access. Confirm the endpoint, authentication method, certificate validation, and firewall rules using the options documented by the installed plugin version.
The official Sensu getting-started requirements are a running Sensu backend, at least one running agent, and sensuctl configured to authenticate as an administrative user. Verify these before creating checks; an invalid backend connection or an unregistered agent prevents every later step from producing events.

Prerequisites and placement decisions
Prepare the Sensu control plane
- Confirm that the backend is healthy and reachable from the machine where you run
sensuctl. - Confirm that the target agent appears as an entity and is currently connected.
- Use an administrative
sensuctlidentity while registering assets and creating CheckConfig resources. - Decide whether RabbitMQ and Redis checks should run on the service hosts, a proxy entity, or a separate monitoring host.
Place checks where they can reach the service
Run a check locally when the service is bound to loopback, when you need host-specific credentials, or when network policy permits access only from the service machine. A remote check is appropriate when one monitoring host can safely reach several endpoints. In that case, treat the monitoring host as production infrastructure: protect its credentials, install the required CA certificates, and test DNS, routing, ports, and TLS before publishing the check.
Separate responsibilities by subscription
Use separate subscriptions when RabbitMQ and Redis run on different machines, require different credentials, have different polling intervals, or need different alert routes. A single agent can advertise both subscriptions, but independent subscriptions make accidental execution and credential reuse less likely.

Install the RabbitMQ and Redis runtime assets
Sensu recommends existing check plugins and makes their executables available through dynamic runtime assets. Register the assets before creating checks:
sensuctl asset add sensu-plugins/sensu-plugins-rabbitmq
sensuctl asset add sensu-plugins/sensu-plugins-redis
The asset reference in a CheckConfig must match the asset name registered with Sensu. Pin a tested asset version in production rather than silently tracking a moving version. The RabbitMQ and Redis asset pages are versioned, and several of the available references are years old, so verify the supported runtime, operating system, dependency versions, and command-line flags before rollout. Run each installed binary with its help option and read the release notes for the version you intend to deploy.

Create agent subscriptions
Add subscriptions to the target agent configuration. This example lets one entity receive both families of checks:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutesubscriptions:
- rabbitmq
- redis
If the services are on separate hosts, give the RabbitMQ agent only rabbitmq and the Redis agent only redis. After changing an agent’s subscriptions, verify that the backend sees the updated entity before diagnosing a check as missing. A correctly written CheckConfig still will not run on an agent that lacks its subscription.
Configure RabbitMQ checks
Start with reachability and node health
Use an aliveness check to answer whether the broker endpoint responds, then add node-health or cluster-health checks to distinguish a reachable process from a healthy RabbitMQ installation. AMQP aliveness is useful when the application protocol itself must be tested rather than only the management endpoint.

This publishes every 30 seconds. Confirm that the hostname, user, password mechanism, virtual host, port, and TLS options match the broker and the asset version. Do not assume that a successful TCP connection proves that RabbitMQ is accepting authenticated AMQP traffic.
Cover queues, consumers, and message flow
Queue checks should name the queues that matter to a service and define explicit warning and critical thresholds. A sustained backlog is more actionable than a single transient increase, so choose thresholds based on drain time, message age, or the service-level objective. Pair queue depth with consumer-count and message-rate checks: rising messages with healthy consumers suggests workload growth, while a queue growing while consumers disappear points toward a consumer or deployment failure.

Use queue checks deliberately
Define one check per important queue or use the plugin’s supported queue-selection syntax. Record the queue name in the check metadata and event annotations so responders can identify the affected workload. Avoid applying one arbitrary threshold to every queue: a low-volume command queue and a high-volume ingestion queue have different normal ranges. If you do not yet know a safe threshold, begin with metric collection and establish a baseline before enabling paging.
Add RabbitMQ metrics separately from status checks
Metric commands provide measurements for dashboards, while status checks produce a small number of states for alerting. Keeping those functions separate lets you poll detailed queue metrics at an appropriate interval without turning every metric fluctuation into an incident.
Configure Redis checks
Verify connectivity with a ping check
A Redis ping check is the simplest first test. It confirms that the endpoint responds through the Redis protocol using the supplied connection details:
---
type: CheckConfig
api_version: core/v2
metadata:
name: redis-ping
spec:
command: check-redis-ping.rb -h redis.internal -p "$REDIS_PORT" -a "$REDIS_PASSWORD"
runtime_assets:
- sensu-plugins-redis
subscriptions:
- redis
interval: 30
publish: true
Check the installed plugin’s interpretation of -p, authentication, database selection, and TLS options before deploying this example. In some versions, a flag’s meaning may differ from the assumption made in a copied command. Test with a non-production account that has only the permissions required by the check.
Monitor memory, connections, and data shape
Redis health is broader than reachability. Add INFO-derived checks for server state, memory checks or memory-percentage checks for saturation, and available-connection checks for client exhaustion. Key-count and list-length checks are useful when a particular data structure is part of an application contract. Set warning levels early enough to leave room for remediation and critical levels at the point where requests or eviction behavior are affected.

Check replication according to the Redis role
Use check-redis-slave-status.rb for a replica that must follow its primary. A standalone Redis instance does not have the same replication expectation, so do not attach a replica-status alert to every Redis endpoint indiscriminately. Identify whether an endpoint is a primary, replica, sentinel-managed member, or cache-only instance and assign checks accordingly.

| Replication | check-redis-slave-status.rb |

Choose schedules and interpret check status
Every check needs an interval or a valid cron schedule. Sensu uses Nagios-compatible result semantics:
| Exit code | Sensu state | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | OK | The check completed and the measured condition is healthy. |
| 1 | WARNING | An early threshold or degraded condition needs attention. |
| 2 | CRITICAL | A service-impacting threshold or failure was detected. |
| Other values | Unknown or custom | The plugin failed to return a standard state or intentionally uses a custom code. |
Choose the interval from the time in which you must detect failure and the cost of polling RabbitMQ management APIs or Redis INFO. A 30-second interval is a configuration example, not a universal recommendation. High-frequency queue or key checks can add load, especially when many agents poll the same broker. Use a slower interval for expensive inventory-style metrics and a faster one only where the response objective justifies it.
When many agents share a check, round_robin can distribute executions. Combining round-robin behavior with TTL-based checks has proxy-entity requirements, so verify those requirements before enabling both. Do not use round-robin as a substitute for coverage: ensure that every endpoint is still monitored by an entity with the required network access.
Collect metrics and send them to dashboards
For time-series data, create metric checks with the appropriate output_metric_format, then route their events through a Sensu pipeline. Sensu validates the emitted format and extracts metric points before handlers send them to systems such as InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, Grafana, or Graphite.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Choose the RabbitMQ overview, queue, or Redis metric command supplied by the corresponding asset.
- Set the check’s metric output format to the format supported by that command and your Sensu version.
- Run the check manually and inspect the event to confirm that a populated metrics section is present.
- Attach a pipeline and handler only after the event contains the expected fields and labels.
- Tag points with stable dimensions such as environment, cluster, node, queue, or database role.
Keep high-cardinality dimensions under control. Queue names, ephemeral connection identifiers, or unbounded key names can create expensive time-series growth. Never put passwords or other secrets in metric labels. A status check and a metric check can use the same subscription while having different intervals and handlers.
Protect credentials and TLS settings
Avoid embedding passwords directly in command strings wherever possible. Sensu supports secrets management and environment-variable substitution; use the mechanism appropriate to your deployment so credentials do not appear in check output, event annotations, shell history, or process listings. Grant the RabbitMQ and Redis monitoring identities only the permissions required for the selected checks.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Store CA certificates and client keys on the agent or proxy host with restrictive permissions. Validate hostname verification and certificate chains explicitly. A check that succeeds only because TLS verification is disabled is not a reliable production check. Validate the configuration safely
- Check control-plane access. Confirm the backend and target agent are active, and that
sensuctlcan reach the backend with the intended administrative identity. - Check subscriptions. Verify that the target entity advertises
rabbitmqorredisexactly as written in each CheckConfig. - Check assets. Confirm that both runtime assets are registered and that the agent can resolve the referenced asset name.
- Check executable availability. Run the installed command’s help option on the execution host and verify its flags, runtime requirements, and TLS support.
- Run manually. Use non-production credentials, capture stdout and stderr, and record the process exit status.
- Test routing without an outage. Point a temporary check at a safe test endpoint or use a controlled threshold to produce WARNING and CRITICAL states. Do not stop a production broker or Redis server merely to test alerting.
- Inspect events. Confirm that the event contains the expected status, output, entity, check name, and, for metric checks, a populated metrics section.
- Connect handlers last. Add long-term storage and notification handlers only after status and metric payloads are correct.
- Review upgrades. Before changing an asset version, read its release notes, rerun help output, and repeat the manual and routing tests.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The check never runs
- Compare the CheckConfig subscription with the entity’s subscriptions character for character.
- Confirm that
publishis enabled and that the check has an interval or valid cron expression. - Verify that the backend accepted the resource and that the intended agent is connected.
- Check that the runtime asset name in the resource exactly matches the registered asset.
The executable is missing or exits before connecting
- Inspect the agent’s asset resolution and runtime logs.
- Run the binary’s help command to detect a changed name or option.
- Verify the asset’s supported language runtime, operating system, and native dependencies.
- Pin a known-good version instead of allowing an untested update.
RabbitMQ reports a healthy endpoint but queues are failing
An aliveness result does not prove that consumers are keeping up or that a cluster is free of partitions. Add queue, consumer, node-health, cluster-health, message, and network-partition checks as appropriate. Compare backlog behavior with consumer count and message rate to identify whether the cause is workload growth, consumer loss, or broker degradation.
Redis ping succeeds but applications still fail
Ping covers reachability only. Check memory or memory percentage, available connections, INFO-derived state, and replica status. A Redis endpoint can answer ping while approaching its memory limit, exhausting client connections, or falling behind its primary.
Metrics do not appear in storage
- Run the metric command manually and inspect stdout for the expected format.
- Inspect the Sensu event and verify that the metrics section is populated.
- Confirm that
output_metric_format, pipeline filters, and handler configuration agree. - Check label cardinality and reject malformed or secret-bearing labels before sending data downstream.
Design a useful check set
Use the smallest set that answers an operational question. A basic RabbitMQ deployment normally needs protocol aliveness, node or cluster health, and checks for the queues and consumers that affect user-facing work. A Redis deployment normally needs ping, memory, available connections, and a role-appropriate replication check; add key-count or list-length checks only when those structures have an explicit service objective. Metric checks complement, rather than replace, alert checks.
| Decision | Prefer this approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reachability versus semantics | Pair ping/aliveness with application-specific checks. | Connectivity alone cannot reveal backlog, memory pressure, consumer loss, or replication failure. |
| Status versus metrics | Separate threshold checks from metric-producing checks. | Alert noise and time-series volume can be tuned independently. |
| Local versus proxy execution | Run locally for host-restricted services; use a proxy for deliberately remote monitoring. | The execution host must have the correct network path, credentials, and trust store. |
| Polling frequency | Match intervals to detection objectives and endpoint cost. | More frequent polling is not free and may add broker or Redis load. |
| Thresholds | Use sustained or service-level thresholds. | Transient spikes should not page responders when the service remains within its objective. |
Once the checks pass manual validation, deploy them first to one non-critical entity, observe event volume and endpoint load, and then expand by subscription. Keep the asset version, command flags, thresholds, credentials source, and expected exit states documented with the CheckConfig so an upgrade or handoff does not turn assumptions into outages.
