Run your encoder as a foreground systemd service, set Restart=on-failure and a short RestartSec, then enable the unit at boot. This lets systemd relaunch the process after qualifying failures—but it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. You need to check both the service logs and YouTube’s live-stream health feedback.
1. Prepare the encoder command and stream settings
systemd can supervise a process; it cannot choose the right audio source, encoder arguments, or YouTube ingest settings for an unspecified setup. First establish a command that runs your encoder in the foreground and keeps it from daemonizing or exiting immediately. Put that executable and its real arguments in ExecStart. Do not copy a guessed FFmpeg command: the correct options depend on your audio source, encoder build, and stream-key setup.
- Choose ingest settings for your actual stream. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance to select a supported codec, resolution and frame rate where applicable, bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval. There is no universal bitrate or resolution for every music stream; account for the encoder’s capabilities and available upstream bandwidth.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for live ingestion.
- Protect credentials. Do not put a stream key in a unit file readable by other users. Use a permissions-controlled configuration mechanism appropriate for your Linux distribution and encoder; the exact method and syntax depend on that setup.
- Confirm the music is permitted for your stream. A technically working encoder does not grant rights to recordings or compositions. Check the applicable rights and YouTube requirements for the material you plan to broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health and messages during it. Do that before relying on the service unattended.
2. Create a systemd service unit
For a system-wide service, create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-music-stream.service with this adaptable pattern:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
[Unit]
Description=YouTube music stream encoder
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/your-encoder --your-arguments
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Replace stream with the service account you created, /srv/youtube-stream with the directory the encoder needs, and the executable and arguments with your verified foreground command. The example’s ExecStart is deliberately not a runnable encoder command. Ensure the account can read the media and configuration it needs, and that the executable path is correct.
What the directives do
Type=simpletells systemd to track the process it starts as the service’s main process. Keep the encoder in the foreground so systemd can supervise it.Wants=network-online.targetandAfter=network-online.targetexpress a startup dependency and ordering relative to the network-online target. They do not guarantee that YouTube is reachable or that the stream is healthy.Restart=on-failureasks systemd to restart after qualifying failures, such as an unclean exit, abnormal signal, operation timeout, or watchdog timeout.RestartSec=5ssets the delay before an automatic restart. Adjust the delay to suit the failure modes and recovery behavior of your encoder and host.WantedBy=multi-user.targetmakes the service eligible to start during normal multi-user boot when enabled.
3. Load, enable, and start the service
- Save the unit at
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-music-stream.service. - Tell systemd to load or reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service for boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-music-stream.service. The--nowoption starts it immediately as well as enabling it for future boots. - Check the process state:
systemctl status youtube-music-stream.service. - Follow its logs:
journalctl -u youtube-music-stream.service -f. PressCtrl+Cto stop following the log; this does not stop the service.
If you edit the unit later, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload before restarting the service so systemd reads the updated file.

4. Choose the restart policy deliberately
| Setting | When it restarts | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
Restart=on-failure |
After qualifying failures, not after a normal clean exit. | A sensible starting point for an encoder expected to keep running, where a clean exit may be intentional or needs investigation. |
Restart=always |
After a clean exit as well as failure conditions. | Only when every exit, including a nominal one, should start another run. It can otherwise hide a program that keeps exiting normally. |
Neither policy overrides an explicit systemctl stop. Automatic restarts are also subject to systemd start-rate limiting through StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst=, which can prevent an unbounded rapid restart loop. Their appropriate values depend on how quickly the encoder can recover and what failures you expect. Check the systemd manual installed on the host for the directives supported by that systemd version, particularly on older distributions.
5. Verify the service and the YouTube stream separately
A service shown as active means systemd sees its main process running; it does not establish that YouTube is receiving an audible, healthy feed. An encoder can remain alive while its input stalls, its connection is unusable, or YouTube rejects or loses the stream.

- For local process failures: inspect
systemctl status youtube-music-stream.serviceand the output ofjournalctl -u youtube-music-stream.service. - For ingestion and stream condition: check YouTube’s live control and stream-health feedback, including any messages shown there. Test before the live stream and monitor health while it is running.
- For a quiet or stalled feed: verify the source is still producing audio and that the encoder’s input and output are functioning; systemd cannot detect every failure that leaves the process alive.
6. Troubleshoot common failures
The service fails immediately after starting
Check systemctl status youtube-music-stream.service and journalctl -u youtube-music-stream.service -n 100. Confirm that the executable in ExecStart exists, its arguments are valid for your encoder build, and User can access the working directory, media, and configuration. Correct the underlying error before repeatedly restarting.
The service starts, then keeps restarting
Use the journal to identify why the encoder exits. A restart policy can relaunch a process after failure, but it cannot fix a bad command, inaccessible input, invalid credentials, or another persistent error. If attempts reach the unit’s start-rate limit, correct the cause first, then run sudo systemctl reset-failed youtube-music-stream.service and sudo systemctl start youtube-music-stream.service.

systemd says the service is active, but YouTube has no healthy stream
Check YouTube’s live control feedback and the encoder logs. Verify that the configured ingest destination and credentials are valid, the network can reach the ingest service, the input is producing audio, and your chosen encoder settings are supported. A process being alive is not the same as successful ingestion.
The service does not start after reboot
Confirm it was enabled with systemctl is-enabled youtube-music-stream.service. If you changed the unit, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then enable it with sudo systemctl enable youtube-music-stream.service. Review the status and journal for boot-time errors such as unavailable files, permissions, or an encoder that starts before its required input is ready.

Stopping the service starts it again
An explicit sudo systemctl stop youtube-music-stream.service is intentional and is not undone by the automatic restart policy. If it appears to return, check whether another service, script, or administrator is starting it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than supervising your own encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
