A stream sponsorship can include cash, free products, or other value—and the disclosure rules apply even when no money changes hands. Use Twitch’s or YouTube’s required branded-content control, then make the relationship clear to viewers in the stream itself. For long livestreams, repeat the disclosure so people who join late do not miss it.
What counts as a stream sponsorship?
A sponsorship is not limited to a paid promotion. Twitch and YouTube both treat value exchanged for content as relevant: that can include payment, free products or services, or another benefit. On Twitch, branded content includes product placements, endorsements, sponsored gameplay, paid unboxings, channel sponsorships, branded panels, and stream-logo overlays. YouTube includes content influenced by a brand partner in exchange for value, including payment, free products, and sponsorships. See Twitch’s Terms of Service, Twitch’s Branded Content Guidelines, and YouTube’s Branded Content Policies.
Whether a platform control is triggered can depend on how the brand appears and which platform you use. Separate platform rules from any legal disclosure duty that applies where you and your audience are located.
How to disclose a sponsorship on Twitch
- Decide whether the branded content is central and intentional. Twitch expects creators to use its Branded Content tool when branded content is a central and intentional part of the livestream. Its examples include sponsored gameplay and product endorsements.
- Enable the Branded Content tool in Creator Dashboard. Twitch’s guidelines direct creators producing branded content to use the Creator Dashboard disclosure tool. Check the current Twitch help and dashboard labels before going live because interfaces can change.
- Tell viewers what the relationship is. The platform tool provides written disclosure, but do not assume it explains every material connection clearly in every viewing context. Say or show something plain and accurate, such as “This stream is sponsored by [Brand]” or “[Brand] gave me this product to try.”
- Check whether the product or service is permitted. Twitch requires creators to ensure the promoted product or service is allowed under its rules.
Twitch lists some situations that do not, by themselves, require its tool: an offline sponsor panel on the channel page, a product visible in the room without paid active promotion, or an affiliate link shared in response to a community question. These are examples about Twitch’s tool policy, not exemptions from any legal disclosure requirement. Twitch’s Terms of Service say creators who publish branded content agree to use the tool and remain responsible for complying with applicable laws and guidelines. The tool is not a legal safe harbor.

How to disclose a sponsorship on YouTube
- Open the livestream’s settings in YouTube Studio. Enable the paid-promotion declaration for branded content. YouTube says the requirement covers livestreams as well as videos, descriptions, comments, Shorts, and other YouTube features. Confirm the current Studio workflow before publishing because controls may move.
- Make a clear, prominent disclosure for viewers. YouTube’s declaration does not remove your responsibility to disclose the relationship clearly or comply with applicable law. Include a direct spoken or visible disclosure in the stream, rather than relying only on a description.
- Review category rules for the product, geography, and audience. YouTube lists prohibited categories including weapons or ammunition, recreational drugs, hacking software, counterfeit products, and academic essay-writing services. Restricted examples include alcohol, financial services, healthcare and medicines, gambling, and election or political content. The lists are not complete and may change; check YouTube’s current policy for the specific campaign.
YouTube’s policy states: “If your video contains branded content, you must let us know using the paid promotion declaration in Studio.” Although the policy uses the word “video,” it explicitly applies to livestreams too. Read YouTube’s current branded-content policy before accepting a deal.

What should you say, and how often?
Use ordinary wording that accurately describes the arrangement. If the brand paid for the stream, say so. If you received a product for free, say that. The FTC’s 2023 guidance gives examples such as “This stream is sponsored by [Brand]” and “[Brand] gave me this product to try.” Put the disclosure in the language of the endorsement so viewers understand it.
For a livestream, one disclosure at the start may not be enough in practice: people can arrive at any time. FTC staff guidance recommends repeating the disclosure periodically or using a continuous, clear disclosure. For video endorsements, FTC guidance also recommends an in-video disclosure rather than relying only on the description. Using both spoken audio and visible text helps reach viewers who watch muted or miss an on-screen message. Add a disclosure to the stream description before viewers click through as well.
There is no universal interval specified in the cited FTC guidance. Choose a cadence that makes the disclosure reasonably likely to reach viewers throughout the stream, especially during a multi-hour broadcast. The FTC’s materials explain U.S. guidance; laws elsewhere may differ. See the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers and Endorsement Guides FAQ.

How Twitch and YouTube differ
| Question | Twitch | YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| What can count as branded content? | Content featuring, using, discussing, or promoting products, services, or specific content for something of value; examples include sponsored gameplay and endorsements. | Content influenced by a brand partner in exchange for value, including payment, free products, and sponsorships. |
| Platform control | Use the Creator Dashboard Branded Content tool when branded content is a central and intentional part of the livestream. | Enable the paid-promotion declaration in Studio for branded content, including livestreams. |
| What viewers need | The tool provides written disclosure; add a clear viewer-facing disclosure where needed and meet any applicable legal obligations. | The Studio declaration is required, and creators remain responsible for a clear and prominent disclosure and applicable legal obligations. |
| Category limits | Check whether the promoted product or service is permitted under Twitch’s current rules. | Some categories are prohibited and others restricted; check the current policy for the product, geography, and audience. |
| Late arrivals and muted viewing | Use an in-stream disclosure that is repeated periodically or remains continuously clear; consider both audio and visible text, plus a description disclosure. | |
These controls do not replace legal compliance. Platform policies and interface instructions can change, so verify them when setting up each campaign.

Check the Sponsorship Tool and Open Invitation campaigns
Twitch documents Open Invitation campaigns through the Creator Dashboard Sponsorship Tool. Campaign invitations depend on criteria such as geography, stream content, and profile information; having a profile does not guarantee access or an invitation. See Twitch’s Open Invitation Campaigns help article for current details.

A sponsor’s brief does not make an unsupported claim safe to repeat. FTC staff guidance says creators should not describe product experience they have not had, call a product terrific if they thought it was terrible, or make claims requiring proof that the advertiser does not have. Share your genuine experience, distinguish opinion from factual claims, and ask the sponsor for support before making claims that need substantiation.

Is a platform’s disclosure tool enough by itself?
Not automatically. Use the platform control required by its rules, then ensure viewers can clearly understand the relationship; applicable law may impose additional requirements.

Does FTC guidance apply everywhere?
The cited FTC materials explain U.S. guidance. Creators elsewhere should check the laws and regulator guidance that apply to their location and audience.
