Put the controller into pairing mode, then on your Android device open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select the controller from the list. The pairing-mode button combination depends on the controller, so check its manual. After it connects, Android also lets you adjust certain controller settings, including button assignments and joystick orientation. Google’s Android controller setup guide describes the pairing steps and available settings.
Before you start
Have the controller and Android device nearby, and check the controller’s manual for its Bluetooth pairing instructions. There is no single pairing-mode button combination that applies to every controller: the manufacturer’s instructions determine how to make that specific controller discoverable.

Also consider what you want to play. Android supports connecting game controllers over Bluetooth or with a compatible cable, but that does not establish that every controller works with every Android device or that every game supports controller input. If compatibility is uncertain, check the controller documentation and the game’s own support information. Google’s Android guidance covers the two connection routes without providing a model-by-model compatibility list.

- Put the controller into pairing mode. Follow the instructions in the manual for your controller. It must be discoverable before Android can find it.
- Open Android Settings. On the Android device, go to Settings > Connected devices.
- Start a new pairing. Tap Pair new device. Android will look for nearby Bluetooth devices.
- Select the controller. Tap the controller’s name in the available-device list and follow any on-screen prompts.
These are Google’s documented controller-pairing steps. Menu names and their locations can differ across Android versions and device manufacturers, so if the labels on your screen do not match, look in Settings for Bluetooth or connected-device controls. Google notes that some steps in its general Bluetooth instructions apply only on Android 15 or later or require supporting hardware; that qualification does not mean every Android device uses identical menus. Adjust controller settings after connecting
Once a controller is connected, Android provides settings for supported controller adjustments. Google specifically says users can swap button assignments or swap the left and right joysticks. For a wireless controller, look under Settings > Connected devices. For a wired controller, the settings route is Settings > System > Game controllers. If Android does not find the controller
Work through the pairing steps again before assuming the controller is incompatible. In particular, make sure it is in its model-specific pairing mode, then use Android’s Pair new device option. The controller must be discoverable for it to appear in the list.

- It does not appear in the available-device list: Check the controller manual and re-enter pairing mode, then try Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device again.
- It was paired before but is disconnected now: Turn on Bluetooth and select the controller from Android’s saved Bluetooth devices. Google’s general Bluetooth instructions cover reconnecting to a previously saved accessory.
- You want to clear an old pairing: Use Android’s device-management controls to forget the saved accessory, then start a fresh pairing if needed.
- The controller connects but does not work in a particular game: Check the game’s own controller-support information. A successful Bluetooth connection does not by itself establish that a game accepts controller input.

Some Bluetooth accessories support Google Fast Pair and may show a connection prompt when they are nearby. Fast Pair is not a requirement for connecting a controller, and controller support should not be assumed: check whether your exact accessory supports the feature. If no prompt appears, use the regular Settings pairing flow instead. Google’s Fast Pair instructions

Bluetooth or a compatible cable?
