Then connect headphones or speakers to that documented output—not simply to a jack that happens to fit. A cartridge jack may serve another purpose, such as an antenna connection.
Identify the audio path before plugging in
Check the accessory’s label and instructions for the jack’s function, then confirm which Game Boy model you are using. Cartridge audio accessories do not all work the same way: some route sound through the console’s cartridge connector, while others provide their own headphone or external-audio output.

- Console-routed audio: listen through the console speaker where supported, or use the console’s headphone output.
- Cartridge headphone output: connect headphones to the cartridge’s documented headphone jack.
- Output for external equipment: connect it to a compatible powered speaker or mixer input with a cable that matches both connectors.
- Other jack function: do not use a jack for audio unless the accessory documentation identifies it as an audio output.
Jack size alone does not tell you whether a connection is an audio output, whether it has volume control, or what equipment it can drive.

Audio routed through the console
Orange FM’s manual describes one route in which the cartridge sends mono audio through the Game Boy’s cartridge audio input, allowing the console to amplify it. The manual lists mono playback through the console speaker on several supported models, but says GBA models do not provide that speaker path. Orange FM also has its own headphone amplifier as an alternative. Check the Orange FM manual for model-specific compatibility and details.

- Made of high quality material, it is durable and reliable.

- Additional interface for earphones connection or charging.
- Make sure this is the right model you need before your purchase.
- Package: 1 pieces
The maker’s FAQ says the cartridge audio input is present on Game Boy models up through GBA, with input volume varying by model; it says Game Boy Color performs best. That does not mean every cartridge accessory uses this path.
Headphones connected to a cartridge
If the accessory documentation identifies a headphone output, plug headphones into that jack and start at low volume. Orange FM documents a 3.5 mm headphone jack with a built-in headphone amplifier. Its manual describes stereo listening when signal strength is adequate and lists support for Game Boy Advance models except Micro, as well as FunnyPlaying GBC and Analogue Pocket. Confirm current compatibility for your exact console and accessory version in the manual.

Cartridge output connected to speakers or a mixer
Use a documented external-audio output with powered speakers or a mixer, matching the cable to the accessory’s output and the equipment’s input. For nanoloop mono, the product documentation says: “The raw signal is rather strong and there is no volume control, it is hence best used as input for a mixer, active speaker etc.” This description applies to nanoloop mono; do not assume other cartridges have the same signal level or lack of volume control.
Check what a cartridge jack is for
Orange FM’s FAQ describes its 3.5 mm jack as an antenna/headphone jack and says an external antenna can be attached there, including a 3.5 mm aux cord. An antenna connection is not a general-purpose audio output for speakers. Follow the instructions for the particular accessory before connecting anything.

Use the headphone connection for your Game Boy model
Game Boy Advance
Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance manual identifies a PHONES jack for stereo headphones, a volume dial, and a mono console speaker that turns off when headphones are plugged in.
Game Boy Advance SP
The SP needs a separate Headphone Adapter. Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance SP manual instructs users to set the volume low, insert the adapter into EXT 2 on top of the console, and then plug headphones into the adapter.

Other Game Boy models
Nintendo’s UK headphone support page says its stereo headphones suit Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance and connect to the socket on the underside. Check the exact console and accessory instructions before relying on that route, especially when using a cartridge designed to feed audio through the console.
Connect the accessory step by step
- Read the accessory instructions. Identify the jack’s stated purpose and whether it is a headphone output, an output for external equipment, an antenna connection, or something else.
- Check console compatibility. Confirm the accessory’s supported console models and identify the console’s headphone connection, if you plan to use it.
- Choose the documented output. Use the cartridge’s headphone jack for headphones, its external-audio output for powered speakers or a mixer, or the console’s output if the accessory routes sound through the console.
- Match both ends of the cable. For a speaker or mixer connection, make sure the cable fits the documented accessory output and the equipment input. A fitting connector does not establish that the jack has the right function.
- Start at low volume. Raise the level gradually using the available console, accessory, or audio-equipment controls. For the GBA SP, follow Nintendo’s low-volume instruction before inserting the adapter.
If you hear no sound
- Recheck that the jack is documented for the connection you chose; a 3.5 mm jack may be an antenna connection rather than an audio output.
- Verify that the accessory supports your exact console model. For Orange FM, consult its current compatibility details rather than assuming one audio path works on every Game Boy.
- Check the console and accessory volume settings, and confirm that headphones or speakers are connected to the intended output.
- If using external equipment, verify that it is powered on and connected to an appropriate input. For a GBA SP, make sure the Headphone Adapter is in EXT 2.
There is no universal troubleshooting procedure established for unspecified cartridge audio accessories; the accessory’s own instructions determine which checks apply.
