Bluetooth is the easiest way to connect most modern controllers; USB is the most reliable fallback. Put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode, select it in Android or Windows Bluetooth settings, then test it in a game that supports gamepads. A controller showing as “connected” does not guarantee that every game will recognize it.
Before you connect
- Charge the controller or have a USB power connection ready.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone or PC.
- Disconnect the controller from a console or another device.
- Find the correct pairing-button combination for your controller.
- Use a USB cable that supports data, not charging only.
- For Android USB connections, have a compatible USB-C or micro-USB OTG adapter if needed.
- Check that the game or cloud service supports controller input.
Compatibility has three separate levels: the controller must connect physically, Android or Windows must recognize its inputs, and the game or service must support and map those inputs.
Connect any controller to Android by Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller.
- Put it into Bluetooth pairing mode. The button combination depends on the model; see the controller-specific instructions below.
- On your phone, open Settings.
- Tap Connected devices, then Pair new device. Android menu names can vary by manufacturer.
- Select the controller from the available devices list and approve the pairing request if prompted.
- Open a controller-compatible game and test the sticks, buttons, triggers and, where supported, vibration.
Google documents this pairing path in its Android controller and Bluetooth instructions. A controller may not operate every part of Android’s interface; test it in a game instead. On supported devices, controller options are available under Settings → System → Game controllers for wired devices, or through the connected controller’s settings for Bluetooth devices.
Connect a controller to Android by USB
- Connect a USB-C controller directly to the phone if the phone supports USB host or OTG.
- For a USB-A, micro-USB or detachable-cable controller, use a compatible OTG adapter and a data-capable cable.
- Connect the controller, then launch a game that supports gamepads.
- If there is no response, try another cable and adapter.
Wired play avoids Bluetooth pairing and can be more consistent, but it restricts movement and does not solve game compatibility. Some phones may not provide enough power for unusual or illuminated controllers. Google’s Android support guidance covers wired controller compatibility and USB connections.

Connect a controller to Windows by Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller and hold its pairing button until its status light flashes.
- In Windows 11, open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on, select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the controller.
- Wait for Windows to show it as connected, then test it in the target game.
Microsoft’s controller instructions use this path for Xbox controllers. Microsoft lists Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later for Bluetooth connection of Xbox controllers. Keep the controller nearby, charge it and update its firmware if pairing remains unreliable.
Connect by USB on Windows
Connect the controller with a data-capable USB cable. Windows will normally load the required input driver automatically. If it repeatedly disconnects, try another cable, USB port or computer and temporarily remove hubs. Test Windows recognition before changing settings inside the game.
Pairing instructions by controller
Xbox Wireless Controller
Turn on the controller with the Xbox button, then hold the small Pair button for about three seconds until the Xbox button flashes. On Android, select it from Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device. On Windows, use Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
Compatible Xbox controllers can also connect by USB. For firmware updates and configuration on Windows, Microsoft directs users to the Xbox Accessories app; connect the controller by USB when using that app. Not every Xbox controller has Bluetooth: older models and Xbox 360 controllers use different connection methods. Bluetooth is also distinct from the proprietary Xbox Wireless protocol and its optional PC adapter. See Microsoft’s official setup and troubleshooting guide and Xbox’s mobile controller guidance.

PlayStation DualSense and DualSense Edge
Turn off the controller and hold Create plus PS until the light bar flashes. Select DualSense Wireless Controller in Android or Windows Bluetooth settings. Sony lists Android 12 and later, Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 among compatible platforms for Bluetooth and USB connections; check the specific model and current support page for exceptions. Sony’s pairing instructions are on its DualSense support page.
On Windows, the PlayStation Accessories app can update firmware and configure supported settings. Advanced features are game-specific: adaptive triggers are not supported on Android, and supported PC games may require USB for haptic feedback and, in some cases, adaptive triggers.
DUALSHOCK 4
Turn the controller off and disconnect its USB cable. Hold Share, then press and hold PS until the light bar flashes. Select the controller in Bluetooth settings. Sony lists Android 10 and later as compatible. On Windows, use Bluetooth, a compatible micro-USB data cable or Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor. The complete procedure is in Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 support article.
On non-Xperia devices, Bluetooth may not provide the touchpad, rumble, motion sensor or headphone-jack audio. Connection therefore does not imply that every controller feature will work.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Turn on Bluetooth pairing and press the small sync button near the USB-C port, then select the controller on Android or Windows. Steam officially supports the Switch Pro Controller through Steam Input, but non-Steam Windows games may need configuration or another input layer. Nintendo’s physical A/B and X/Y labels differ from the Xbox layout, so prompts may appear reversed. Steam’s supported-device documentation explains its controller support.
Third-party controllers
Many third-party controllers offer XInput, Android, DirectInput, Switch or iOS modes. Use the exact startup combination in the controller’s manual; there is no universal third-party pairing shortcut.
- Windows: prefer XInput mode when available.
- Android: use the manufacturer’s Android or standard Bluetooth gamepad mode.
- Steam: try the native mode first, then enable Steam Input if necessary.
- Cloud gaming: check the service’s verified-controller list.
Make the controller work in games
Windows games commonly target XInput, the input standard associated with Xbox controllers. PlayStation and Switch controllers may use DirectInput or their own native support, so behavior varies:
- Some games recognize them directly.
- Some need Steam Input.
- Some non-Steam games need a compatible remapping layer.
- A game may work while displaying Xbox button prompts.
- A controller may work in menus but not during gameplay.
For Steam, connect the controller before launching the game, open Steam’s controller settings to confirm button activity, and check the game’s controller options. Enable the appropriate Steam Input support when the game does not detect the controller. If a game has native PlayStation support, compare native support with Steam Input rather than running both unnecessarily. Avoid using multiple remapping programs at once because they can create duplicate virtual controllers or conflicts.

Test the connection at three levels
- Device level: Android or Windows shows the controller as paired, or USB produces a connection notification or device entry.
- Input level: Android controller settings, Windows game-input tools or Steam show button and stick activity.
- Game level: A known controller-compatible game responds to movement, face buttons, shoulders, triggers and stick-clicks.
Only the third test proves that a particular game supports the controller.
Cloud gaming and Remote Play
Xbox says supported mobile devices can use Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers and other verified controllers for mobile gaming. Xbox Cloud Gaming availability varies by device, region, plan, game and platform. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 20 Mbps or higher for mobile cloud gaming, but that recommendation does not guarantee low latency. Check the current Xbox mobile and cloud-gaming information before subscribing or troubleshooting.
For PlayStation Remote Play, Sony supports compatible DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers on supported devices. Check the current PS Remote Play page and controller requirements for your device and game. Cloud and Remote Play services can impose their own controller restrictions even when Android or Windows recognizes the device.

| Symptom | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Controller is missing from Bluetooth | It is not in pairing mode or is connected elsewhere | Turn it off, disconnect USB, re-enter pairing mode, and disconnect it from the console or previous device |
| It pairs but does nothing in a game | The game lacks support, expects XInput, or needs Steam Input | Test another game, connect before launching, then try XInput mode or Steam Input |
| Buttons or prompts are wrong | Different physical layouts or virtual Xbox mapping | Change the game’s prompt setting or remap once; labels may still differ |
| Connection keeps dropping | Low battery, interference, distance or outdated firmware | Charge it, move closer, update firmware and try USB |
| USB does nothing | Charge-only cable, incompatible OTG adapter or missing USB host support | Use a known data cable and compatible OTG adapter; try another port |
| Works in Steam but not elsewhere | The other game expects XInput | Use native support or one remapping layer, not several at once |
If Bluetooth pairing still fails
- Remove old or duplicate controller entries.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again.
- Restart the phone or PC.
- Charge the controller and keep it close.
- Ensure it is not reconnecting to a console or tablet.
- Update its firmware using the manufacturer’s official app where available.
- Try a USB connection.
For a PlayStation controller that keeps returning to a console, forget and re-pair it. Sony documents reconnecting a DUALSHOCK 4 to a console with a USB cable and the PS button.

If Android recognizes it but the game does not
Confirm that the game advertises controller support, test another known-compatible game, check the game’s Android requirements and try USB if Bluetooth input is inconsistent. Android recognition alone cannot make an unsupported mobile game accept a gamepad.
Which connection or controller should you use?
- Best general Windows compatibility: an Xbox controller in native XInput mode.
- If you already own a PlayStation controller: use native support where available or Steam Input on Steam; use USB when supported DualSense features matter.
- Best no-software approach: a controller with native XInput support on Windows.
- Best phone setup: Bluetooth for flexibility, or a dedicated USB-C mobile controller if you want an integrated handheld design and your phone, case and port are compatible.
- Cheapest troubleshooting purchase: a known data cable or the correct Android OTG adapter before replacing a working controller.
Do not assume that vibration, motion controls, touchpads, haptics, adaptive triggers, headset audio or microphones will work merely because the controller connects. Those features depend on the controller, operating system, connection method and individual game.
Microsoft’s mobile-app documentation also notes that Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore have not been available in the Microsoft Store since March 5, 2025. Do not rely on outdated Android-on-Windows setup guides as a general controller solution; use the native Windows game, Steam, cloud service or current app support instead.
