To play a gaming handheld on a TV, first confirm that your exact model supports video output. Then connect it through its compatible dock or adapter to the TV’s HDMI port, provide the required power, select that HDMI input, and pair or plug in a controller. The setup differs between PC-style handhelds and Nintendo Switch consoles—and the Switch Lite cannot output to a TV.
Before you connect anything, check your handheld model
A USB-C port does not automatically mean a handheld can send video to a TV. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact model and use a dock or adapter confirmed to work with it. For a PC-style handheld, the connection usually runs from a video-capable USB-C port through a compatible dock or adapter, then from the dock’s HDMI output to the TV. Valve says Steam Deck works with a variety of USB-C docks or hubs, but does not officially support every display peripheral (Valve Steam Support).
Nintendo Switch consoles use a dock made for the relevant model rather than the generic USB-C dock approach. The Switch Lite does not support TV Mode (Nintendo Support).
Connect the handheld to the TV
- Check video and accessory compatibility. Confirm that the handheld supports external video and identify its compatible dock or adapter. For a Switch-family console, use the dock intended for that model.
- Connect the dock or adapter to the handheld. Follow the device or dock instructions. If using a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, verify compatibility with your model first.
- Connect HDMI to the TV. Run an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI output to a TV HDMI port.
- Connect the required power. Use the handheld’s recommended charger or the dock’s required power supply. Switch 2 has specific requirements: Nintendo recommends its AC adapter, model NGN-01. For dock use with another adapter and cable, Nintendo says the power output must be at least 54 W. The older Switch adapter can power Switch 2 directly but does not provide enough power for the Switch 2 dock (Nintendo Support).
- Select the matching TV input. Use the TV remote to choose the HDMI input connected to the dock.
Model-specific connection notes
Steam Deck
Use a USB-C dock or hub with HDMI output and suitable power for the Deck. Valve describes the Steam Deck as a general-purpose PC and says it works with a variety of USB-C docks or hubs; that does not guarantee every dock and TV combination will work. Check the dock’s compatibility and power requirements before buying.

Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED
Connect the console’s AC adapter and an HDMI cable to the Nintendo dock, place the console in the dock, and select the TV’s HDMI input. A Joy-Con pair that has not previously been attached to the console must first be attached before the controllers can be used wirelessly (Nintendo Support).
Nintendo Switch 2
Use the Switch 2 dock and follow Nintendo’s model-specific power guidance. For troubleshooting a missing picture, Nintendo calls for an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and recommends checking dock power and the TV’s HDMI settings. If a splitter or other device sits between the dock and TV, connect the dock directly to the TV while troubleshooting (Nintendo Support).

Lenovo Legion Go S and Legion Go Gen 2
The Legion Go S guide describes connecting a display cable to its multipurpose USB-C port and connecting the other end to the display. Lenovo lists USB4 with DisplayPort support on Legion Go Gen 2 and identifies the USB4 port for TV mode. Check the specification for your precise model before choosing a dock or adapter (Lenovo Legion Go S user guide; Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 specifications). Lenovo’s listed support for up to three independent displays (the built-in display and two external monitors via USB-C), and USB-C output up to 8K at 30 Hz, are model specifications—not promises that games will render at those resolutions or frame rates.
Pair or connect a controller
You can use a separate wireless controller or, if the dock has a compatible USB port, connect a wired controller to it. For wireless play, pair the controller through the handheld’s supported controller settings and follow the controller’s pairing instructions. Charge the controller first if pairing fails.

Choose a dock or adapter that fits your setup
Before buying accessories for a PC-style handheld, compare the requirements that affect whether the setup will work:
- Video output: Does the exact handheld support video through the port you plan to use?
- Compatibility: Is the dock or adapter confirmed to work with that model?
- Power: Can it provide the charging or dock power the handheld requires?
- Display connection: Does it have the needed HDMI output and cable support for your setup?
- Extra ports: Does it include a USB port if you want to use a wired controller or another peripheral?
For Nintendo Switch-family consoles, follow the instructions for that model’s dock and power setup rather than assuming a generic USB-C dock will work.

Troubleshoot a missing picture or controller connection
The TV shows no picture
- Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the dock.
- Reseat the handheld, dock, HDMI cable, and power connections.
- Check that the handheld supports external video and that the dock or adapter is compatible with the model.
- For Switch 2, follow Nintendo’s guidance to check dock power, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, review the TV’s HDMI settings, and connect the dock directly to the TV if another device is in the signal path (Nintendo Support).
The controller will not pair
- Charge it, enable the correct pairing mode, and follow the pairing steps for the handheld.
- On Steam Deck, check for controller software or firmware updates.
- For Switch Joy-Con, attach them to the console first if they have not previously been attached.
The Switch 2 screen stays on while docked
Nintendo says the Switch 2 screen should go black when the console is docked while the dock is connected to a powered TV. If it remains on after the checks in Nintendo’s support instructions, the dock may need service. This guidance is specific to Switch 2, not a general diagnostic for all handhelds (Nintendo Support).
The picture works, but the game does not look or feel as expected
Connecting a handheld to a 4K TV does not by itself make the handheld render a game at native 4K or at a particular frame rate. The official setup guidance cited here does not establish one best resolution or frame-rate setting for every device. Adjust the game and display settings to suit the handheld, game, and TV.
