A gaming handheld combines a screen and game controls in a compact device you can play without a desk. A gaming laptop is a clamshell PC with a built-in keyboard, trackpad and larger display, and it can accommodate more powerful components in many configurations. The choice comes down to whether you prioritize play-anywhere convenience or gaming performance and broader computer use; compare specific models, not just categories.
How the form factor changes the way you play
Gaming handhelds put controls in your hands
A handheld gaming PC integrates its screen and gamepad controls into one body. That makes it easy to pick up and play while seated, reclining or traveling, without setting up a desk or packing a separate controller. ASUS describes its ROG Ally family in these terms: a touchscreen and built-in gamepad in a compact device. ASUS’s guide to gaming handhelds and laptops is manufacturer-authored, so treat it as product positioning rather than an independent comparison.
The trade-off is the smaller screen and the fact that handheld controls are not a keyboard and mouse. Text entry and desktop navigation can be awkward, especially for games or applications designed around those inputs.
Gaming laptops are built around a keyboard and display
A gaming laptop has a built-in keyboard and trackpad, plus a larger screen than a handheld. It is more natural for keyboard-and-mouse games, typing, school or work, browsing and multitasking. It is generally less convenient to use while standing or reclining, and carrying it usually means bringing a separate mouse or controller if a game calls for one.

Performance, screen size and cooling
Gaming laptops have room in many configurations for discrete graphics processors and larger cooling systems. That can support higher graphical settings and more demanding games, though performance varies by laptop model and configuration. A handheld’s compact size limits the room available for cooling and power delivery. Neither category label nor GPU naming alone tells you how a particular device will perform: check the exact model, game, resolution and settings.
For a current laptop example, PC Gamer’s 2026 guide lists high-performance configurations with discrete GPUs and a 16-inch, 1600p display. It reports a weight of 2.72 kg for the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 configuration it describes, and notes weak gaming battery life for that machine. Those details illustrate one model’s performance-and-portability trade-off, not a benchmark for all gaming laptops. PC Gamer’s 2026 gaming-laptop guide also reflects configurations and availability that may change.

Portability and battery life are different questions
A handheld is easier to carry and use without a surface, keyboard or separate controller. That convenience does not mean every handheld lasts longer on battery than every laptop. Runtime depends on the device, game and workload; compare battery performance for the way you expect to play, rather than assuming one category wins.
For a concrete example of how features differ by model, Lenovo’s September 2023 announcement for the original Legion Go described a Windows 11 handheld with an 8.8-inch display, a battery rated up to 49.2 Wh, detachable controllers, a microSD slot, and USB-C ports supporting DisplayPort and Power Delivery. These are launch details for that original model, not specifications for every handheld or a guarantee of current availability. Lenovo’s original Legion Go announcement quotes vice president and general manager Jun Ouyang saying the company designed it “to empower gamers around the world to game their way”; that describes Lenovo’s intention, not independent evidence of product quality.

Can you use a handheld as a regular computer?
Some Windows handhelds can run computer applications, but using one for work or other desktop tasks is less convenient without peripherals. A compatible dock can connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse, making a handheld more useful at a desk. Before buying a dock, verify that the exact device supports the needed USB-C display output and power delivery, and that it works with the dock. Lenovo’s original Legion Go announcement, for example, lists DisplayPort and Power Delivery support on its USB-C ports; do not assume another handheld has the same connections.
A laptop is the more straightforward choice if typing, multitasking and general computer use are regular needs. A docked handheld can make sense when compact gaming is the priority and desk use is occasional, but it takes extra accessories and setup.

Upgrades and model-by-model differences
Upgradeability depends on the model. ASUS says certain 2025 Intel-based ROG Strix laptops offer tool-less access to SSD and RAM; that does not apply to all laptops, and it is not evidence that a handheld’s RAM can be upgraded. Check the manufacturer’s service documentation for the exact device before treating an upgrade as an option. ASUS’s guide also notes that handhelds and laptops vary in portability, performance and configuration.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose a handheld if portable play and integrated controls matter most, and you are comfortable with a smaller screen and model-specific performance limits.
- Choose a gaming laptop if you want a larger display, keyboard-and-mouse play, higher graphical settings in a suitable configuration, or one device for gaming and general computer use.
- Consider a docked handheld if you mainly want compact play but sometimes need a monitor, keyboard and mouse; confirm compatibility for the exact device and dock.
No category-wide, directly comparable statistic establishes a universal winner for performance or battery life. Make the decision against the games, settings and tasks you actually plan to use.
