To connect a GoDaddy or Namecheap domain to a server, first find the domain’s authoritative nameservers. Those nameservers identify the DNS provider whose control panel you must edit. Then choose either to delegate DNS to your hosting company with its nameservers or keep the current DNS provider and point the domain’s @ A record to your server’s IPv4 address. Add a separate www CNAME or A record, preserve email and verification records, and allow time for DNS caches to update.

What actually connects a domain to a server
A domain registration and a server are separate services. DNS is the directory between them: it tells browsers and other clients which network address belongs to a hostname. An A record maps a hostname to an IPv4 address. In most DNS editors, @ means the bare domain, such as example.com; www represents www.example.com; and a label such as blog represents blog.example.com.

It is which nameservers are currently assigned to the domain. The company listed there is the authoritative DNS provider, and its zone is the one that visitors use. A domain registered at one registrar can therefore have DNS hosted by the other registrar, by a hosting company, or by an independent DNS service.
Find the authoritative DNS provider first
- Open the domain’s nameserver or DNS settings at the registrar.
- Write down every nameserver currently assigned.
- If they belong to GoDaddy, edit the GoDaddy DNS zone. If they belong to Namecheap, use Namecheap Advanced DNS. If they belong to your hosting company or another provider, make the record changes there instead.
- If the registrar’s DNS editor is empty or does not control the records, do not keep adding records there. The active nameservers indicate where the real zone is managed.
This check prevents the most common mistake: changing records in a panel that is not authoritative. Your edits can appear to save successfully while public DNS continues answering from a different provider.

Choose a DNS architecture
There are two valid ways to connect the domain. Select one before changing anything, because switching nameservers can replace the active DNS configuration.

Delegate DNS when the host should own the whole zone
Use the nameserver method when the host supplied nameservers and its setup depends on managing the complete DNS zone. This is convenient for a new site or a domain whose email and verification records are not yet in use. Namecheap’s shared-hosting service, for example, identifies its Web Hosting DNS and lists dns1.namecheaphosting.com and dns2.namecheaphosting.com.

Delegation is not just another way to add an A record. It changes the authority for every hostname under the domain. Before making the switch, inventory A and AAAA records, www and other subdomains, MX records for mail, TXT records for SPF, DKIM, DMARC or ownership verification, and any service-specific records. Recreate everything required in the new DNS zone before or immediately after delegation.
Keep the current nameservers when other services already depend on them
Keep the existing provider when the domain already has working email, authentication, analytics, game-community subdomains or other integrations that you do not want to migrate. Add an A record for the root and configure www according to the host’s instructions. This changes only the hostnames you edit and leaves unrelated records with their current provider.

Prepare the server and DNS change
- Obtain the server’s public IPv4 address from the hosting provider. Use the address assigned to the intended server, not a private address from a local network.
- Confirm which hostname the application expects. A website may need the bare domain,
www, or both. A game control panel or API may use a subdomain such aspanelorapi. - Decide whether the host requires
wwwas a CNAME to the root domain, a CNAME to a provider hostname, or a second A record. Follow the host’s exact target. - Record current DNS values before editing. Include mail-related MX and TXT records and any verification entries.
- Check that the server is configured to answer for the domain. DNS can deliver a request to an IP address, but it does not create a web-server virtual host, install a certificate, open a firewall, or configure an application.
- If the server has a public IPv6 address and the host expects IPv6 traffic, plan an AAAA record as well. Do not add an AAAA record pointing to an address that does not serve the application.
Connect a GoDaddy domain by editing DNS records
These steps apply when the domain’s active nameservers point to GoDaddy and you are keeping GoDaddy as the DNS provider.
- Sign in and open Domain Portfolio.
- Select the domain, open DNS, and choose Add New Record.
- Choose record type A. In the host or name field, enter
@for the root domain. For a subdomain, enter its label, such asblogorshop. - Enter the server’s public IPv4 address in the points-to or value field. Choose an appropriate TTL and save the record.
- Find the existing
wwwentry. Edit it or add one if it is missing. Use a CNAME whenwwwshould follow another hostname, commonly the root domain or a hostname supplied by the host. Use an A record only when the host specifically instructs you to pointwwwdirectly to an IP address. - Review the zone for duplicate or conflicting records for the same hostname. Do not leave an old A record, redirect, or CNAME competing with the new destination.
GoDaddy records that require extra care
An A record is the fundamental record that indicates a domain’s IP address, so changing an existing A record can move a live website immediately. It can also disrupt a service that relies on a particular address. Before replacing one, note its old value and determine whether the record serves a website, an API, a verification workflow or another service.

Connect a Namecheap domain while keeping Namecheap DNS
Use these steps when the domain’s nameservers point to Namecheap and you want Namecheap to remain authoritative.

- Sign in and open Domain List.
- Select Manage beside the domain.
- Open Advanced DNS, locate Host Records, and choose Add New Record.
- Create an A record with
@as the host and your server’s public IPv4 address as the value. Set the TTL according to your change plan and save. - Add or edit the
wwwhost. When the host’s instructions call for it, create a CNAME fromwwwto the root domain or to the provider hostname. If an A record is required instead, point it to the specified IPv4 address. - Remove conflicting URL redirects, A records or CNAME records for the same host. Newly registered domains can contain parking records that must be removed before your own A record works.
Delegate a Namecheap domain to hosting nameservers
If the hosting company gave you nameservers, do not add those nameservers as ordinary A or CNAME records. In the domain’s Nameservers section, choose Custom DNS and enter each nameserver exactly as supplied. If you are using Namecheap shared hosting, choose Namecheap Web Hosting DNS where that option is available. Save the assignment, then manage the zone in the hosting provider’s DNS panel.
Because delegation replaces the source of truth for the entire zone, copy required records before saving. In particular, preserve MX and TXT entries for mail, authentication and verification. A successful nameserver change with an incomplete zone can make the website appear while email or third-party services fail.

Configure the server after DNS points to it
DNS only supplies the destination. Finish the connection on the server itself.
- Add the domain and any required subdomains to the server’s site, reverse proxy or control-panel configuration.
- Configure the application to accept requests for both the bare domain and
wwwif both records resolve there. - Open the network ports required by the service and verify that the server’s firewall and hosting firewall permit them.
- Install or issue an HTTPS certificate for every hostname users will visit. Test the certificate after DNS resolves to the new server.
- For a game server or API, configure the application’s public hostname separately from DNS. A hostname resolving correctly does not prove that the game process is listening, reachable through the firewall, or using the expected port.
How long DNS changes take
Individual record changes often become visible in about 30–60 minutes. Namecheap states that a newly created A record normally takes about 30 minutes to take effect. Nameserver changes are broader and can take up to 24–48 hours worldwide. These are operational estimates, not guarantees: recursive resolvers and local devices may retain cached answers for different periods.

During the transition, two people can receive different answers even when they query the same domain. One network may still use the old address while another has the new one. Avoid repeatedly changing the record during this period; each change can make troubleshooting harder and may extend the time needed for caches to converge.
Verify the connection from more than one network
- After the expected interval, check the root domain from your normal connection and a second network, such as a mobile connection. Confirm that both resolve to the intended server.
- Check
wwwseparately. A working root record does not automatically create a workingwwwrecord. - Open the site over HTTPS and inspect the certificate and final URL. Confirm that the application, not merely a default server page, responds.
- Test any subdomains used by the application, control panel or API.
- Send and receive a test message if the domain provides email. A website test does not validate MX or TXT records.
- If one resolver still reports the old address within the published window, compare results from additional networks before making another edit.
Preview the new server before public propagation
A hosts-file entry can direct only your computer to the new server while public DNS remains unchanged. This is useful for checking a website or application before switching visitors.

- Back up the hosts file on your computer.
- Add one line containing the new server IP followed by the hostname you want to test, for example
<server-ip> example.comand, if needed, a second line forwww.example.com. - Save the file, clear any local DNS or browser cache that is affecting the test, and open the hostname.
- Remove the temporary lines after testing.
This technique does not change the domain’s DNS zone. Other visitors continue to use the old destination until the real record or nameserver change propagates.
Troubleshooting common failures
The domain still shows the old website
Check the authoritative nameservers first. If they point to a hosting provider or another DNS service, your GoDaddy or Namecheap edit is not active. If the nameservers are correct, compare the current A record with the server’s actual public IPv4 address and allow for resolver caching.

The root works but www fails
The root and www are separate hostnames. Add the CNAME or A record required by the host, remove any competing record, and verify www independently. Also configure the web server and HTTPS certificate to accept that hostname.
Changing nameservers broke email
The new DNS provider may not contain the old MX or TXT records. Restore the required records in the new zone, or return to the previous nameservers while you inventory and migrate the complete DNS configuration. Do not assume that a working website means mail records survived.
The DNS editor does not contain the records you expect
Inspect the active nameserver assignment. The domain may use third-party or host-managed nameservers, so records must be edited in that provider’s panel. Adding records at the registrar will have no public effect while another provider is authoritative.
A new A record conflicts with a redirect or parking entry
Remove the old URL redirect, parking A record or CNAME for the same hostname, then leave one deliberate destination. Newly registered Namecheap domains commonly need their parking records removed before a custom A record is used.
DNS resolves but the service is unreachable
Resolution proves only that the hostname maps to an address. Check the server process, application hostname configuration, firewall rules, hosting firewall and required ports. For HTTPS, check that the certificate covers the hostname and that the server routes it to the intended application.
IPv6 users see a different result
An AAAA record can send IPv6-capable clients to a different destination than the A record. Remove an incorrect AAAA record or configure the IPv6 address and service properly before publishing it.
