How to connect a mini PC to a TV and use it for gaming

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect the mini PC’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV, select that input, and use Windows+P to choose Second screen only. Then open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a resolution and refresh rate supported by the mini PC, cable or adapter path, and television. HDMI carries sound as well as the picture, so set the TV or your chosen audio device as Windows’ output.

This gets the living-room display working; it does not guarantee console-level performance. Gaming results depend on the exact mini PC’s graphics hardware, memory, cooling, the game, and the settings you choose. The connection procedure is broadly consistent, but ports, supported modes, HDR capability, and controller compatibility must be checked for your specific equipment.

The simplest setup: HDMI from the mini PC to the TV

HDMI is the first choice when the mini PC has an HDMI output and the television has an HDMI input. Microsoft describes HDMI as an audio-and-video interface and notes that external-display capability depends on the device model and the cables or adapters in the path. That principle applies here: a plug that fits is not proof that every resolution, refresh rate, or HDR mode will work. See Microsoft’s external-display guidance when checking compatibility.

Check the ports before buying anything

  • Find the mini PC’s video output. It may be HDMI, USB-C with display support, DisplayPort, or another connector. Read the manufacturer’s specification for the exact model rather than assuming every USB-C socket outputs video.
  • Find an unused HDMI input on the TV. Note its label, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2, because you will select that same input after connecting the cable.
  • Check the display mode you want to use. Resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio support all depend on the PC, the cable or adapter, and the TV working together.
  • Place the mini PC where its vents are not blocked. A TV setup often puts the computer in a cabinet or behind the screen, where restricted airflow can affect sustained gaming performance.

Connect and select the source

  1. Shut down or sleep the mini PC if you prefer, although many HDMI connections can be made while both devices are on.
  2. Plug one end of the appropriate HDMI cable into the mini PC and the other into the TV input you identified.
  3. Turn on the TV and open its Input, Source, or similar control. Choose the HDMI number used by the cable. Control names vary by manufacturer, so consult the television manual if the label is different.
  4. Start or wake Windows. If the TV remains blank, wait briefly for Windows to detect it, then continue with the display checks below.

Choose which screen Windows uses

Press Windows+P to open Windows’ projection choices. Select Second screen only when the TV should be the sole screen. This turns off the built-in monitor or another connected display and leaves the TV as the active desktop. Choose Duplicate when the same image should appear on both screens, or Extend when you want separate desktops. Microsoft documents these modes in its multiple-monitor instructions.

For couch gaming, Second screen only usually avoids a window opening on the wrong monitor and removes the need to move the mouse between displays. Duplicate is useful while configuring the system with a nearby monitor. Extend is useful if you want a guide, chat window, or launcher on a second screen, but games may open on whichever display Windows or the game has selected.

Set resolution and refresh rate correctly

Open Settings > System > Display. Select the TV if more than one display is shown, then open Advanced display. Windows lists the resolution and refresh-rate combinations it believes are available through the current connection. Pick a mode that the mini PC, cable or adapter, and TV all support. Microsoft’s display guidance explains where these choices are exposed: Windows display and monitor settings.

What to verify in Advanced display

  • Resolution: Start with the TV’s native or recommended resolution when Windows offers it. A lower resolution can be appropriate if a particular game is too demanding, but change it deliberately and check how the TV scales the image.
  • Refresh rate: Choose only a rate listed as supported for the active connection. A TV may advertise different rates at different resolutions or through different HDMI inputs.
  • Signal path: If a desired mode is missing, the limitation may be the mini PC output, the adapter, the cable, the selected TV input, or the TV’s settings rather than Windows itself.
  • Orientation and scaling: Leave orientation on landscape for a conventional television. Windows scaling changes desktop text size; it does not create extra gaming performance.

Do not infer a guaranteed frame rate from the refresh-rate menu. A 120 Hz option means the display path can accept that mode; it does not mean a given game or mini PC will render 120 frames per second. Actual performance must be checked against the exact graphics hardware, game requirements, and in-game settings.

Make sure sound goes to the TV

Because HDMI can carry audio as well as video, the TV may appear as a Windows playback device after the connection is detected. Open the taskbar sound control and select the TV or HDMI audio device, or go to Settings > System > Sound and choose it as the output. Raise the TV volume and verify that it is not muted.

If you want headphones, speakers, or a soundbar connected to the mini PC instead, select that device in the same Windows sound panel. Some televisions also pass audio to a receiver or soundbar through their own audio settings; those controls are model-specific. A picture with no sound usually means Windows is still using the mini PC’s internal output, the TV input is muted, or the HDMI connection has not fully negotiated audio.

Using USB-C, DisplayPort, or another output

USB-C is a connector, not a guaranteed video output

A USB-C socket can support charging and data without supporting video. For a USB-C-to-HDMI setup, the mini PC’s specific port must support a display alternate mode, and the cable or adapter must support the desired signal. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance explains why port capabilities and accessories matter: Fix USB-C problems in Windows.

  1. Read the mini PC manufacturer’s specification for the exact USB-C port. Look for explicit display-output or alternate-mode support, not merely the words USB-C.
  2. Choose an adapter or cable that accepts that output and converts it to the TV’s HDMI input.
  3. Connect the adapter, select the matching HDMI input on the TV, and use Windows+P and Advanced display as described above.
  4. If no picture appears, test the mini PC’s native HDMI output if it has one. This separates a USB-C capability or adapter problem from a Windows display-setting problem.

DisplayPort and other digital outputs

If the mini PC exposes DisplayPort, mini DisplayPort, or another digital video connector, use an adapter that is specified for that connector-to-HDMI conversion and for the resolution and refresh rate you intend to run. The same rule applies as with HDMI: the connector shape alone does not establish support for every mode. Confirm the mini PC output specification, adapter specification, and TV input capability as a set.

Wireless display: possible, but not automatically ideal for games

A compatible wireless display adapter can plug into the TV’s HDMI input. Microsoft’s instructions call for powering the adapter’s USB connection as directed and using Windows+K in Windows to connect: Use the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter.

  1. Attach the wireless display adapter to an available HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Provide USB power according to the adapter’s instructions.
  3. Select that HDMI input on the TV.
  4. On the mini PC, press Windows+K and select the compatible wireless display target.

Wireless display is useful when running a cable is impractical, but the cited Microsoft instructions do not establish latency or image-quality results for gaming. Network conditions, the adapter, the mini PC, and the TV all influence responsiveness. For timing-sensitive games, a direct wired connection is the safer starting point; use wireless only after confirming that its responsiveness is acceptable for the games you play.

HDR: requirements and Windows settings

HDR is not enabled simply because a television has an HDR label. The mini PC, display connection, TV, and game must all support the relevant HDR path. Microsoft states that Windows HDR requires compatible hardware on both the PC and display, and its documentation explains how to enable it in Settings > System > Display: HDR settings in Windows and What is HDR in Windows?.

  1. Connect the TV and select it as the active display.
  2. Open Settings > System > Display and select the TV.
  3. Look for the HDR option. If Windows does not show it, the hardware or current connection may not support HDR, or the TV’s own setting may need to be enabled.
  4. Turn on HDR only after confirming that the resulting desktop and game image look correct. Some games have a separate HDR toggle or calibration screen.

HDR can change brightness, color, and tone mapping. If the desktop looks washed out or a game appears incorrect, compare the result with HDR disabled and check the TV’s picture mode and the game’s HDR settings. Do not treat the presence of an HDR switch as proof that every game will render HDR or that the mini PC has enough graphics performance for a particular HDR resolution and refresh rate.

Can a mini PC actually run your games?

Yes, a mini PC can be used as a TV gaming computer, but “mini PC” describes a size category, not a performance level. Two systems with the same form factor can have very different processors, integrated or discrete graphics, memory configurations, cooling limits, and supported outputs. No frame rate, resolution, latency, or console-equivalence claim is valid without the exact model, game, and settings.

Check the hardware before installing large games

  • Graphics hardware: Identify the integrated or discrete GPU and compare it with the game’s published minimum and recommended requirements.
  • Memory: Check installed RAM and whether the graphics system shares it. The amount available to games can differ from the headline capacity.
  • Cooling and power: Verify that vents remain clear during long sessions. A system that can run a short benchmark may reduce clock speeds when heat builds up.
  • Storage: Confirm enough free space for the operating system, game files, updates, and shader caches.
  • Display support: Match the game’s intended resolution and refresh rate to the modes available in Advanced display.

Tune a game without guessing

  1. Start at the TV’s recommended resolution and the game’s default or detected graphics preset.
  2. Play a representative section for several minutes rather than judging only the menu.
  3. If the image is too slow or uneven, reduce demanding settings in the game, such as resolution scale, shadows, reflections, or effects, before changing Windows’ desktop settings.
  4. Use the game’s own frame-rate display or performance overlay when available. Treat the result as specific to that game, scene, driver, and setting combination.
  5. If the game is stable, increase one setting at a time and retest. This identifies which option exceeds the mini PC’s practical limit.

A TV’s high refresh-rate capability can still be useful for desktop smoothness or games that the mini PC can render quickly, but it does not raise the computer’s rendering ability. Conversely, a modest refresh rate does not prevent a game from being enjoyable if its frame pacing and controls are responsive.

Controllers, keyboard, and couch controls

A PC-compatible game controller can make a TV setup more comfortable than a desk keyboard and mouse. Compatibility is not universal: verify that the controller works with your Windows version and with the specific games you intend to play. The available Microsoft display guidance does not document a particular controller-pairing procedure or certify a specific model.

Plan the control layout

  • Keep a keyboard and mouse available for Windows sign-in, launchers, driver dialogs, and games that require them.
  • For a wireless controller, check its connection method, range, battery state, and whether the mini PC has the required wireless hardware or receiver.
  • For USB controllers, leave enough cable length to play safely from the seating position and avoid routing the cable where it can be pulled.
  • Open the game’s input settings after connecting the controller. Some games select a controller automatically; others require choosing a device or changing button prompts.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The TV says No signal

  1. Confirm the HDMI cable is fully seated at both ends.
  2. Use the TV’s source control to select the exact HDMI input used.
  3. Press Windows+P and choose Duplicate or Second screen only.
  4. Open Settings > System > Display and check whether Windows detects the TV.
  5. Try another TV HDMI input or the mini PC’s native HDMI output, if available. If an adapter is in use, reseat it and verify that the mini PC port supports video.

If another monitor works but the TV does not, compare the TV’s supported modes with the mode Windows is attempting. A mode that exceeds the TV or adapter capability can prevent an image until Windows falls back to a supported setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The picture appears, but it is blurry, cropped, or the wrong size

Return to Settings > System > Display and select the TV’s recommended resolution. Check the TV’s picture-size or overscan control; names differ by manufacturer. Avoid assuming that lowering Windows scaling will fix overscan, because scaling changes desktop dimensions while the TV may still be cropping the signal.

The refresh-rate option you want is missing

Open Advanced display and confirm that the TV, rather than another monitor, is selected. Then check the entire signal path: mini PC output, adapter, cable, chosen TV input, and the TV’s own input settings. The available Microsoft documentation does not specify one universally suitable cable tier for every mini PC and TV, so select accessories based on the actual mode and port specifications.

There is no sound

  • In Windows sound settings, select the TV or HDMI audio device as output.
  • Check the TV’s volume and mute state.
  • Disconnect other audio devices temporarily so Windows does not keep sending sound elsewhere.
  • Reconnect the HDMI cable and recheck the selected display and audio device.

HDR is unavailable or looks wrong

Confirm that HDR is enabled in the TV’s relevant picture or input settings and that the PC, connection, and game support HDR. In Windows, select the TV under Settings > System > Display and inspect the HDR controls. If the image is washed out or excessively dim, compare HDR on and off and use the game’s calibration controls where provided.

The game launches on the wrong screen

Press Windows+P and select Second screen only, or set the TV as the main display in Windows display settings. Some games retain their own monitor selection, so check the game’s video or display menu after Windows is configured. Extend mode can leave the game on the original monitor even though the TV is connected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game stutters or runs slowly

First separate display problems from rendering limits. Confirm the selected resolution and refresh rate, then compare the game’s graphics settings with the mini PC’s GPU, memory, cooling, and published game requirements. Reduce demanding in-game settings one at a time and retest. Keep vents clear and avoid placing the system in a confined space. Without the exact mini PC and game, a universal frame-rate or latency diagnosis would be unreliable.

A practical pre-game checklist

  • Mini PC video output and TV HDMI input have been identified.
  • The cable or adapter supports the intended connection and display mode.
  • The TV is set to the HDMI input carrying the mini PC signal.
  • Windows+P is set to Second screen only, Duplicate, or Extend intentionally.
  • Resolution and refresh rate are selected under Advanced display.
  • Windows audio output is the TV or the intended headset or speakers.
  • HDR is enabled only when the PC, connection, TV, and game support it.
  • The mini PC’s GPU, memory, cooling, storage, and game requirements have been checked.
  • A controller is confirmed compatible, while a keyboard and mouse remain available for setup.
  • Vents and cables are clear of obstructions and trip hazards.

What to expect from the finished setup

Once the wired connection, Windows display mode, audio output, and game settings are configured, the TV functions as the mini PC’s monitor. The setup can be as simple as HDMI, input selection, and Second screen only. More advanced choices—USB-C adapters, wireless display, high refresh rates, or HDR—require checking the exact specifications of every component. Treat the mini PC’s model and the game’s requirements as the deciding factors for performance, not the computer’s small size or the television’s advertised capabilities.
