To copy screenshots and recorded clips, connect the Switch directly to your computer with a data-capable USB cable and use the console’s Data Management menu. To view, record, or stream live gameplay, USB alone is not enough: you normally need a compatible dock, HDMI cable, capture card, and capture software.
First, choose what you want to do

| Copy screenshots | Yes | Data-capable USB cable |
| Copy recorded gameplay clips | Yes | Data-capable USB cable |
| View live gameplay on the computer | No, not by itself | Dock, HDMI cable, capture card |
| Record or stream live gameplay | No, not by itself | Dock, HDMI cable, capture card, software |
| Use a laptop as a simple monitor | Usually no | Capture hardware or a display with video input |
| Transfer installed games or ordinary save files | No | Nintendo does not provide ordinary USB browsing for these files |
| Charge the console | Often possible | Suitable power equipment; this is not a data connection |

Compatible models and requirements
Nintendo supports USB capture transfer on the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch 2. You need:
- A USB cable that supports data transfer, not just charging.
- A direct connection to the console’s USB-C port on the bottom of the system.
- A computer with MTP support. Windows is the clearest officially documented route; support on macOS, Linux, iOS, and other systems depends on their MTP implementation or additional software.
The cable is sold separately, and the dock’s USB ports do not support Nintendo’s documented computer-transfer feature. See Nintendo’s USB-transfer instructions.

Original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED
- Turn on the console and open the HOME Menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Manage Screenshots and Videos.
- Select Copy to a Computer via USB Connection.
- Connect the data-capable cable directly to the console’s bottom USB-C port—not to the dock.
- Connect the other end to the computer.
- When the computer connection is established, select the screenshots and videos you want to copy.
Nintendo does not state a fixed limit on the number of screenshots and videos that can be transferred at one time through this USB feature. The computer may show the console as an MTP or portable device rather than as a normal flash drive, so it may not receive a conventional drive letter. The final selection and copy steps vary by operating system.
Switch 2
- Open Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Manage Screenshots and Videos.
- Select Copy to PC over USB.
- Connect a data-capable USB cable directly to the Switch 2 console.
- Select the screenshots and videos on the computer.
The Switch 2 menu wording is slightly different from the original Switch family. Nintendo documents this process in its Switch 2 USB-transfer guide.
What this connection does—and does not—expose
This is a capture-transfer function, not general storage access. It is intended for screenshots and videos already saved in the console’s Album. Do not expect the computer to browse installed games, game files, ROMs, or ordinary save data as if the Switch were a USB drive. For Nintendo’s capture-management limitations, consult its capture-management support page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConnect live Switch gameplay to a computer
A normal USB cable from the original Switch console to a computer is not a live video connection. The original console has no direct video-out port for this purpose; its normal HDMI output comes from the dock. The standard signal path is:
Switch in dock
→ dock HDMI Out
→ capture card HDMI In
→ capture card USB Out
→ computer
For the original Switch family, Elgato likewise specifies the dock as the HDMI source rather than connecting the console directly by USB or a USB-to-HDMI adapter. See Elgato’s Switch capture setup.

- [Compatibility]: The SiWiQU dock only works with Nintendo Switch/Switch OLED. The switch docking station is not work with Nintendo Switch 2 (2025). (NOTE: Only docking station included, no cable or charger.)
- One-touch Display Switching: Press the TV/Tabletop Mode button at the back of the dock, you can choose Tabletop Mode or TV Output Mode.
- Special Design: The guide notch have a spring buffer function, You don't have to worry about damaging the port over time when docking the console in. The switch fits into the dock tight and secure (NOT compatible with protective cases). The anti-skid pad at the bottom prevents it from sliding around or falling over by accident.
- Charge While Playing: The charging stand allows the Switch system to be charging while in TV or tabletop mode. Built in smart original chip, having Short-circuit Protection, Over Power Protection, Recovery Protection and Overheating Protection.
- Portable and Lightweight: This Switch dock with classic red and blue colour match is only 109g(0.24lb), 7.5 in * 2.3 in * 1.3 in size, which is much more portable and lightweight than official dock. Its work capability is the same as official standard.
Equipment checklist
- A dock-compatible Switch model and its dock. Switch Lite does not support docked TV mode.
- The dock’s power supply.
- An HDMI cable.
- An HDMI capture card with USB output.
- A computer with a suitable USB port.
- Capture software, such as the capture-card maker’s application or compatible streaming software.
Switch 2 also uses its dock’s HDMI output for TV or monitor mode; see Nintendo’s Switch 2 dock and TV setup.
Setup steps
- Place the Switch in its dock and connect the dock to power.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI Out to the capture card’s HDMI In.
- Optionally connect the capture card’s HDMI Out to a television or monitor for pass-through.
- Connect the capture card to the computer with its USB cable.
- Open the capture-card application or streaming software.
- In OBS Studio or similar software, add the capture card as a video-capture source.
- Select the capture card’s audio source if game sound is not included automatically.
- Confirm that the preview shows the Switch image.
Capture devices differ. For example, Elgato’s Game Capture Neo uses HDMI input, HDMI pass-through, and USB-C computer output over USB 3.0. Higher-bandwidth devices such as the 4K X may require an appropriate USB 3.x connection; slower connections can reduce supported capture resolution. Check the device’s official requirements before buying.
Play through HDMI pass-through when possible. The computer preview can have latency, making it unsuitable as the primary gameplay display even when recording works correctly. Elgato describes pass-through as real-time output to a display; the USB feed is intended for computer capture.
Recommended Switch settings
For compatibility troubleshooting, Elgato recommends checking:
- System Settings → TV Settings → TV Resolution: 1080p or 720p.
- TV Sound: Stereo.
- Match TV Power State: Disabled.
These are compatibility recommendations, not universal requirements for every capture card.

Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I connect the USB cable
- Disconnect the cable.
- Open the console’s USB-copy menu first.
- Reconnect directly to the console’s bottom USB-C port.
- Try a known data-capable cable; a charge-only cable will not work.
- Try another computer USB port and remove hubs, adapters, or docking stations.
- If using macOS or Linux, test a Windows computer or verify that the system has reliable MTP support.
- Use a microSD card as a fallback.
Nintendo specifically identifies direct console connection—not the dock’s USB ports—as the supported route.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Switch appears, but there are no files
Plugging in the cable does not necessarily expose the Album. Activate Copy to a Computer via USB Connection on the original Switch family or Copy to PC over USB on Switch 2. Even then, expect access to screenshots and captured videos only, not a general folder containing games or saves.
The capture card says “No Signal”
- Confirm the console is fully seated in the dock.
- Confirm the dock has power.
- Check that the HDMI cable runs from dock HDMI Out to capture-card HDMI In.
- Select the correct capture source in your software.
- Remove unnecessary splitters and adapters.
- Test the dock directly with a TV or monitor.
- Try another HDMI cable and a suitable high-speed USB port.
- Check the capture card’s firmware and software.
- Restart the Switch, capture card, and capture application.
If the dock works directly with a TV but not in capture software, the likely issue is the capture card, USB connection, source selection, firmware, or software—not the console.
Video works but audio does not
- Set TV Sound to Stereo.
- Enable the capture device’s audio source in the software.
- Remove headphones from the original Switch’s headphone jack if HDMI audio is expected.
- On Switch 2, check whether USB-C audio accessories or headphones are diverting sound away from HDMI.
Elgato and AVerMedia both document headphone and USB-C audio routing as possible causes of missing HDMI sound. See Elgato’s audio guidance and AVerMedia’s Switch 2 troubleshooting guidance.
The computer preview is delayed
Some delay is normal in USB capture workflows. Use HDMI pass-through on a TV or monitor for gameplay, and use the computer preview for recording or streaming. Also check the capture device’s USB bandwidth and software settings.

Switch Lite limitations
Switch Lite supports USB transfer of screenshots and videos, but it does not support docked TV mode. Therefore, it is not a straightforward candidate for the conventional dock-to-HDMI-to-capture-card workflow. Do not buy a standard capture setup assuming the Lite can output HDMI like a regular Switch.

microSD card
A microSD card is the practical fallback when USB transfer fails, when MTP support is unreliable, or when you need to move a large archive. Follow Nintendo’s current instructions for exporting captures and card compatibility rather than choosing solely by generic speed claims.
Wireless transfer to a smart device
For the original Switch family, Nintendo supports QR-code-assisted wireless transfer to a smartphone or tablet, limited to up to 10 screenshots and one video capture at a time. It is convenient for a small batch but less suitable for archiving many files. See Nintendo’s wireless-transfer instructions. Switch 2 has additional upload and transfer options, but those are alternatives to—not replacements for—the direct USB computer workflow.
Which option should you choose?
- Occasional screenshots or short clips: Use a data-capable USB cable.
- Large media archives or unreliable MTP: Use a microSD card.
- Live recording, streaming, Discord, webcam overlays, or commentary: Use a capture card with the dock and HDMI.
- Switch Lite live capture: Do not assume the normal docked HDMI method works; its lack of TV mode is the limiting factor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a Switch directly to a laptop with USB?
Yes, for transferring screenshots and recorded videos, using the console’s USB-copy menu and a data-capable cable. No, USB alone does not normally send live Switch gameplay to the laptop.

Does Switch Lite work with a capture card?
Switch Lite supports USB media transfer, but it does not support docked TV mode, so it is not a straightforward fit for the conventional dock-and-HDMI capture workflow.
Is a charge-only USB cable enough?
No. The cable must support data transfer.
Can I play through OBS?
