For a Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, connect power and HDMI to the dock, place the console in it, then select the TV’s matching HDMI input. Nintendo Switch 2 also uses a dock, but requires Switch 2-compatible power hardware and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode.

Check which Switch model you have

Model TV output Required setup
Nintendo Switch Yes Compatible Switch dock, HAC-002 AC adapter and HDMI cable
Nintendo Switch OLED Model Yes Compatible Switch dock, HAC-002 AC adapter and HDMI cable
Nintendo Switch Lite No It has no supported TV Mode; a generic adapter or dock is not an official workaround
Nintendo Switch 2 Yes Switch 2 dock, Switch 2 AC adapter (NGN-01) and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable

Nintendo’s original Switch connection instructions and accessory compatibility chart distinguish these setups. The standard Switch and OLED connect to the TV through their dock, not directly from the console’s USB-C port. Do not assume a generic USB-C-to-HDMI adapter provides supported TV output.

What you need

Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED

  • The console and a compatible Nintendo Switch dock.
  • The Nintendo Switch AC adapter, model HAC-002.
  • An HDMI cable, a TV or monitor with an HDMI input, and a wall outlet.

Nintendo’s setup guide identifies the dock, adapter and HDMI connection. The original Switch setup does not specify an Ultra High Speed cable; use a known-good HDMI cable rather than assuming an expensive one is necessary.

Nintendo Switch 2

  • A Nintendo Switch 2 console and Switch 2 dock.
  • The Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01.
  • An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, ideally the one supplied with the console, plus an HDMI-equipped TV or monitor and a wall outlet.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 connection instructions specify the cable and dock setup. The original Switch dock and its AC adapter cannot provide TV Mode through a Switch 2 dock, and the original Switch HDMI cable is not compatible for Switch 2 TV Mode. Check Nintendo’s compatibility chart before mixing accessories.

Connect an original Switch or Switch OLED

  1. Open the rear cover of the dock.
  2. Connect the AC adapter to the port marked AC ADAPTER, then plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  3. Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the dock’s HDMI OUT port. Connect the other end directly to an HDMI input on the TV or monitor. Do not use a USB port on the dock for HDMI.
  4. Close the dock cover if you wish, then turn on the TV.
  5. On the TV remote, press Input, Source, or the equivalent button and choose the HDMI input used by the cable. Labels vary by TV.
  6. Wake or power on the console if needed. Insert it into the dock with the screen facing the same direction as the dock’s front panel.
  7. Check that the console screen turns off and the Switch image appears on the selected TV input.

These port labels and connection steps follow Nintendo’s setup instructions.

Connect a Nintendo Switch 2

  1. Open the back cover of the Switch 2 dock.
  2. Connect the Switch 2 AC adapter’s USB-C cable to the dock’s AC adapter port, then plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  3. Connect an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable to the dock’s HDMI port and connect its other end directly to the TV or monitor.
  4. Close the dock cover. If Joy-Con 2 controllers have not been set up for wireless use and you plan to use them wirelessly, remove them from the console as needed.
  5. Insert Switch 2 into its dock with the screen facing the dock’s front panel.
  6. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the dock.
  7. Confirm that the console screen turns off and the Switch 2 image appears. When TV output is active, the dock’s TV output LED should light.

See Nintendo’s Switch 2 setup guide and its TV Mode overview. Wireless controller setup is separate from the HDMI connection; Nintendo notes that controllers not previously attached to the console may need to be attached first to use them wirelessly.

What success looks like

  • The console is fully seated in its compatible dock and its built-in screen turns off.
  • The TV or monitor shows the Switch interface on the HDMI input connected to the dock.
  • For Switch 2, the dock’s TV output LED lights when the TV connection is active.

A monitor can replace a television if it has a compatible HDMI input and can display the console’s output. Whether a specific game supports TV Mode is a separate question: for Switch 2, check the TV Mode compatibility icon on the game packaging or its Nintendo eShop product information, as described in Nintendo’s TV Mode overview.

If the TV says “No Signal”

Check in this order, changing one thing at a time so you can identify the cause:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input physically connected to the dock.
  2. Bypass HDMI switches, splitters, soundbars, AV receivers and video adapters. Connect the dock directly to the TV.
  3. Check that the HDMI cable is fully inserted at both ends and that its dock end is in the dock’s HDMI output, not a USB port.
  4. Check that the dock is connected to power using the correct adapter for your Switch generation.
  5. Remove the console and confirm that it works in handheld mode, then reinsert it with the screen facing the dock’s front. Temporarily remove a protective case if it could prevent the console seating fully.
  6. Try another HDMI input on the TV, then another known-good cable.
  7. If available, test with another TV or monitor, then another compatible dock.
  8. If the problem persists, contact Nintendo support for original Switch video problems or consult its Switch 2 troubleshooting guidance.

Nintendo recommends simplifying the connection during diagnosis; a power strip may be fine in ordinary use, but connect the adapter directly to a wall outlet while troubleshooting. A picture that appears intermittently can point to a loose or damaged cable, a TV port, an intermediary device, or—on Switch 2—an incompatible cable or adapter. Begin with a direct connection and the model-appropriate accessories.

If the console screen stays on while docked

For Switch and Switch OLED, the screen should turn off when the console is docked correctly and the TV connection is active. Check the dock’s power and HDMI connections, confirm the console faces the dock’s front and is fully seated, and remove any case that may obstruct insertion. Also make sure the dock is compatible with the console. Nintendo’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps cover these checks. For Switch 2, Nintendo says a screen that stays on during a no-video problem may mean the dock needs service after basic checks; see its troubleshooting guidance.

If Switch 2 reports an adapter problem

Use the Switch 2 adapter (NGN-01) for docked TV Mode, or an adapter that meets Nintendo’s stated power requirement. Nintendo specifies at least 54 W for an alternative adapter in the relevant setup and troubleshooting guidance; that figure does not guarantee that any third-party charger rated at 54 W will work. Nintendo says the original Switch HAC-002 adapter can charge Switch 2 directly but cannot provide TV Mode through the Switch 2 dock. Follow Nintendo’s Switch 2 troubleshooting steps; its adapter guidance also covers the adapter warning.

If the original Switch dock’s TV output LED flashes

Check the AC adapter and HDMI cable, then disconnect and reconnect both. If available, try another compatible dock. Nintendo’s flashing TV output LED guidance says persistent problems may require dock or console service. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch Lite or Switch 2.

Common connection mistakes

  • Connecting HDMI to the console or a dock USB port instead of the dock’s HDMI output.
  • Leaving the dock without power.
  • Choosing the wrong HDMI input on the TV.
  • Assuming Switch Lite supports TV output.
  • Using original Switch dock or power accessories for Switch 2 TV Mode.
  • Trying to diagnose the connection through a soundbar, receiver or HDMI switch before testing directly to the TV.
