High CPU usage in Warzone is not automatically a fault: an uncapped game can use most of a processor while delivering smooth, stable gameplay. Troubleshoot it when it comes with stutter, poor or inconsistent FPS, delayed input, overheating, or a GPU that is sitting underused. Start by letting shader preloading finish, then measure CPU, GPU, temperatures, clocks, and frame rate in the same gameplay situation before changing settings.
Check whether Warzone is actually CPU-bound
Total CPU usage alone cannot tell you what is limiting performance. A heavily loaded game thread can restrict FPS even when overall CPU usage looks moderate; conversely, high total usage with stable frame times and safe temperatures may simply mean the game is using the available processor capacity.
- Enter a repeatable practice area or similar gameplay situation. Compare like with like: menu readings are not directly comparable to a Battle Royale match, where the game may be processing more players, objects, vehicles, and world activity.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or use a monitoring tool you already trust. Observe total and per-core CPU usage, GPU utilization, temperatures, CPU clock speed, RAM use, FPS, and—if available—1% lows or a frame-time graph.
- Repeat the same scene at a lower resolution or with a lower graphics preset. If FPS barely changes and the GPU remains underused, the system is probably CPU-limited. If GPU utilization is near maximum and lower resolution materially improves FPS, the GPU is more likely the limit. This is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee: a scene can shift between CPU and GPU limits.
- Close one suspected background application and repeat the comparison. If performance changes, that process may be contributing to the load or conflict.
High CPU and high GPU use together can be normal under a demanding, uncapped workload. The goal is consistent performance at the FPS you want, not a particular CPU percentage.

Let shader preloading complete
Activision says shader preloading is an important part of Warzone’s first boot and that leaving the main menu interrupts it, which can cause performance problems. After an update, driver change, or graphics reset, allow the process to finish before starting a match.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
- Launch Warzone and stay on the main menu while shader preloading runs.
- Do not enter a match, repeatedly switch menus, or close the game during preloading.
- When it finishes, restart the game if performance remains inconsistent.
If preloading repeatedly restarts or never finishes, restart the PC, update Windows and the graphics driver, temporarily close overlays and monitoring utilities, and repair the game files. Avoid clearing shader caches as an early fix: that can force another lengthy compilation cycle. See Activision’s Warzone PC troubleshooting guidance.
Cap FPS to a rate your system can sustain
An uncapped frame rate makes the CPU keep preparing frames as quickly as possible, particularly in menus or less demanding scenes. In Warzone’s current graphics or display settings, find the FPS limit option; its exact label or location can change between updates. Test a cap at your monitor’s refresh rate, or a lower target your PC can hold consistently—such as 120, 100, 90, or 60 FPS. With variable-refresh-rate displays, some players prefer a cap a few frames below the refresh rate. There is no universally best number: balance latency, smoothness, hardware, resolution, and display capability.
Compare frame pacing as well as the displayed average. A stable cap can be more useful than a higher but erratic frame rate that keeps the CPU saturated.
Close unnecessary background apps and overlays
For a controlled test, close browsers with many tabs, recording or streaming software, cloud-sync apps, launchers downloading updates, RGB and peripheral utilities, and overlays from Discord, Xbox Game Bar, Steam, Battle.net, NVIDIA, or AMD. Third-party antivirus scans can also compete for resources.
Recommended Free Tools
Activision identifies NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts, and recommends updating Razer Synapse where applicable. That does not mean these programs conflict on every PC: close them temporarily rather than uninstalling them, then re-enable features one at a time if performance improves. Activision also recommends closing interfering applications in its PC troubleshooting guide.

Restart the PC and check laptop power
A restart clears lingering processes and is a useful first step after installing updates. If you play on a laptop, connect its charger and use the manufacturer’s performance profile. Battery operation or a quiet mode can limit sustained CPU performance; a more aggressive mode can also increase heat and trigger throttling, so check temperatures while testing.
Update Warzone, Windows, and the graphics driver
Install available Windows updates, then obtain the graphics driver from AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel—not from an unofficial driver-download site. Reboot and let Warzone preload shaders again if prompted. A newer driver is not guaranteed to improve performance; if the problem began immediately after a driver update, trying the previous stable driver from the hardware maker may be reasonable.
Activision’s troubleshooting and requirements pages displayed the following driver versions on March 11, 2026. They are dated references, not permanent recommendations; check the current official pages before installing:

Activision currently lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 for Warzone, but game compatibility is different from operating-system support: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Moving to Windows 11 is not a guaranteed CPU-usage fix, but users should account for Windows 10’s support and security status. See Microsoft’s Windows startup settings and support information.

Adjust settings that may affect CPU workload
Change one or two options at a time and compare the same scene. Menu names vary across Warzone updates, and no setting below is a guaranteed CPU fix.
- View distance and environment detail: Test reducing these first if available. More visible world detail and objects can increase the work involved in preparing a scene.
- Shadows, lighting, particles, and volumetric effects: These can affect rendering workload and frame times, often substantially on the GPU. Test them if the measurements point to a GPU limit or busy-scene frame-time spikes; do not assume every reduction will free CPU capacity.
- Field of view: A higher FOV shows more of the scene and may add workload. Lower it as a comparison, but weigh any performance change against visibility and comfort.
- Texture quality: This primarily affects graphics memory and GPU-side resources, so lowering it alone is unlikely to resolve a CPU bottleneck.
- Render resolution and upscaling: These are generally more useful when the GPU is the limit. If lowering resolution barely changes FPS while GPU use stays low, keep image quality where you prefer it.
Setting everything to Low can make the game look worse without improving performance when the CPU is already the constraint. Restore any setting that produces no meaningful change in your repeatable comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTest texture streaming only when it fits the symptoms
Activision documents On-Demand High-Quality Streaming under Menu → Manage Files → Graphics. Its options include Optimized, which uses more internet bandwidth for higher-fidelity content, and Minimal, which uses less bandwidth with reduced graphical quality. Labels and paths can differ by build, platform, and language; see Activision’s content-management documentation.
This is not a universal CPU-usage fix. If hitching coincides with unstable internet, bandwidth contention, disk activity, or asset streaming, test Minimal and compare the same situation. The trade-off can include lower visual quality or more texture pop-in. Activision’s known-issues page discusses texture-streaming and allocated-cache settings in connection with some hitching reports, including an example for PlayStation 5; that is not proof that the setting fixes every PC problem.
Repair or verify the game installation
Damaged or missing files can cause problems, but a file check cannot make an inherently CPU-limited system faster. Activision recommends the relevant launcher’s repair tool:

Battle.net
- Open Battle.net and select Warzone.
- Open the game’s options menu and choose Scan and Repair.
- Let the scan and any download finish without interrupting it, then restart the launcher and test the game.
Steam
- Open your Steam Library and right-click Warzone.
- Select Properties → Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and allow the process to complete.
Verification may redownload files and use substantial bandwidth and disk space. Activision’s current PC configurations specify SSD storage; if Warzone is installed on a hard drive, storage can contribute to loading or streaming problems. Check the current requirements for the listed storage details.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check antivirus interference safely
Activision suggests adding the Warzone game folder to an antivirus exception list when antivirus software is interfering. If you test this, exclude only the legitimate game directory, use the narrowest available exception, and remove it if it does not help. Do not turn off antivirus protection globally or exclude unfamiliar downloaded executables.
Check CPU temperatures, clocks, and Windows power mode
A CPU can report high usage while delivering poor FPS if heat or power limits force it to reduce clock speed. During sustained gameplay, check CPU temperature, package power, effective clock speed, per-core load, and GPU utilization. Also check that fans work, the cooler is functioning, and dust is not blocking filters or heatsinks. Safe temperature limits vary by processor and firmware; consult the CPU maker’s specifications rather than relying on a universal cutoff.
On Windows 11, Microsoft documents Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → Best performance. On a desktop, testing it may help if the CPU is not maintaining expected boost clocks. It raises power use and can increase heat; on a thermally constrained laptop, that heat can cause throttling and make performance worse. Microsoft also recommends reviewing resource-heavy processes and unnecessary startup apps in its Windows performance guidance.
If the PC has integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that Warzone is using the intended GPU. Windows 11’s documented path is Settings → System → Display → Graphics → select the game → Options → High performance → Save; restart the game afterward. This does not directly lower CPU usage, but it can prevent poor performance and misleading bottleneck readings on hybrid-graphics systems. See Microsoft’s graphics settings guidance.

Check RAM and system requirements before buying parts
Activision’s requirements page lists these CPU and memory categories. They are configuration targets, not promises of a particular FPS in every mode, map, or update:
| Activision configuration category | CPU listed | RAM listed |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | 8 GB |
| Recommended for 60 FPS/high settings | AMD Ryzen 5 1600X or Intel Core i7-6700K | 12 GB |
| Competitive/Ultra 4K | AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or Intel Core i7-10700K | 16 GB |
The same requirements page lists an SSD with 116 GB available at launch; updates may require additional space. Check the page for current requirements, since they can change: Activision’s Warzone PC system requirements.
- Check whether memory use is near capacity and whether Windows is paging heavily to disk.
- Confirm RAM is running in dual-channel mode where the platform supports it; a single-channel configuration can restrict performance.
- Close memory-heavy apps and ensure the system drive has enough free space.
- Do not buy RAM just because CPU usage is high. Add or reconfigure memory when capacity, paging, or channel configuration points to a memory constraint.
If CPU usage remains high, GPU utilization remains low, lowering resolution does little, and temperatures and clocks are healthy, the processor or Warzone’s current workload may be the limit. A CPU upgrade makes more sense than a GPU upgrade in that pattern; verify motherboard and memory compatibility, since a platform change may require more than a new processor. If GPU use is consistently near maximum and lower resolution materially improves FPS, investigate the GPU instead. Consider cooling only when measurements show thermal throttling.
Use a clean boot to isolate software conflicts
If closing obvious background apps has not identified the cause, a Windows clean boot can help test whether a background service or startup program is involved. Follow Microsoft’s current steps; some functionality is temporarily unavailable during the test.
- Sign in as an administrator, search for msconfig, and open System Configuration.
- Open Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open Startup and select Open Task Manager.
- In Task Manager, disable enabled startup items, then restart Windows and test Warzone.
- If performance changes, re-enable services and startup items systematically, restarting as needed, until you identify the conflict.
To restore normal operation, open msconfig, select Normal startup, re-enable services you disabled, restore startup items in Task Manager, and restart. Microsoft’s full instructions are at How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
What to avoid—and how to recover if troubleshooting causes a new problem
- Avoid registry “FPS boost” edits, third-party optimizer utilities, and random process-priority or CPU-affinity changes. They are not a substitute for identifying the limit and can create instability.
- Do not disable security features globally or change BIOS power limits and overclocks before establishing a stable baseline.
- Treat Game Mode, hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, and individual overlays as system-specific A/B tests, not universal fixes. Change one item at a time and restore it if it does not help.
- If the game stops launching after a clean boot, restore normal startup and re-enable the services and startup items you disabled. Remove antivirus exclusions that did not help.
- If security settings were changed, restore their defaults. Activision specifically advises re-enabling ASLR if it was disabled; then repair files through Battle.net or Steam if needed.
If hitching began after a Warzone update and local checks do not explain it, consult Activision’s maintained known-issues list. A documented game issue is not necessarily a fault with your PC.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
| What you observe | What to test next |
|---|---|
| High CPU, low GPU, and poor or unstable FPS | Cap FPS; check per-core load, background processes, RAM paging, CPU clocks, and temperatures. Compare FPS at lower resolution. |
| High CPU and high GPU, but stable gameplay | The system may simply be working hard. Keep the desired image quality or cap FPS if you want steadier frame pacing or less unnecessary load. |
| Stutter or usage spikes after an update or driver change | Finish shader preloading, reboot, check drivers and game files, temporarily close overlays, then review Activision’s known issues. |
| High temperature with unexpectedly low CPU clocks | Check cooling, dust, fan operation, laptop power profile, and throttling. Do not raise power limits as a first response. |
| Problem improves when one overlay or utility is closed | Re-enable features one at a time to isolate the conflict; keep only the change that addresses the problem. |
| Problem appears only in Battle Royale, not menus or smaller modes | Compare the same type of gameplay and account for the heavier scene workload; menu readings alone are not a useful match benchmark. |
