Connect a PS3’s analog AV cable to the console’s AV MULTI OUT port, then select the matching input on your TV and video output on the console. A yellow/red/white cable is composite and gives standard-definition video; a green/blue/red cable with separate red/white audio is component and can deliver a sharper, higher-resolution analog picture when the TV supports it. Use HDMI when available, especially for protected HD video.

Identify the cable and the PS3 port

All the analog cables below connect to the PS3’s proprietary AV MULTI OUT socket. They do not plug into the console’s HDMI OUT port. Sony’s PS3 quick-start guide identifies the two separate outputs.

Connection Plugs at the TV Typical use
Composite Yellow video, white left audio, red right audio Basic CRT or TV with composite inputs; standard definition
Component Green Y, blue Pb/Cb, red Pr/Cr video, plus white and red audio Best picture from the PS3’s analog output when the display has YPbPr inputs
S-Video or regional SCART/AV cable S-Video or a region-specific connector, usually with separate audio Compatible older or regional equipment; follow the cable and TV labels
HDMI HDMI Digital connection; generally the easiest HD option and suitable for protected HD video

Do not confuse the two red plugs on a component cable: the red plug grouped with green and blue is video (Pr/Cr); the other red plug beside white is right-channel audio. Use the labels on the TV, not color alone, if its inputs are arranged differently.

Connect composite (yellow, white and red)

  1. Turn off the PS3 and TV before connecting the cable.
  2. Insert the cable’s console end into the PS3’s AV MULTI OUT port.
  3. Connect yellow to the TV’s composite video input, usually labeled Video, AV or Composite. Connect white to L audio and red to R audio.
  4. Turn on the TV and select the input matching those sockets. If the sockets are on the side of the TV, the input label may differ from the rear-panel labels.
  5. Turn on the PS3. If there is no picture or the console was last set to HDMI, reset its video output as described below, then choose Settings → Display Settings → Video Output Settings → Composite / S Video.

On NTSC systems, Sony lists composite output as 480i; in PAL regions the corresponding standard-definition mode is 576i. The picture can look soft, jagged or hard to read on a large modern screen. That is a limitation of composite video, not necessarily a faulty cable. See Sony’s PS3 video-output guide for the available modes and setup.

  • Stable & Clear Retro Gaming Performance--Delivers stable composite video signal and crisp stereo sound for PS1/PS2/PS3 classic games, restoring the original retro gaming experience. Tinned copper conductors and durable shielding minimize signal loss and interference for consistent, lag-free performance.
  • Durable Replacement for Original Cords--Ideal for replacing lost, broken or damaged original PlayStation AV cables. The flexible PVC jacket and reinforced connector joints withstand frequent plugging and long-term use, making it a reliable spare for home or travel use.
  • Compatibility Reminder--This is a 3-connector RCA composite AV cable for PS1/PS2/PS3. Please ensure your display has red/yellow/white RCA composite ports before purchase; it is not compatible with 5-port component video inputs. If your device only has an HDMI port, you’ll need an RCA to HDMI converter (not included)!!!

Connect component (green, blue and red video)

  1. With the PS3 and TV off, connect the cable to the PS3’s AV MULTI OUT port.
  2. Connect the three video plugs to the TV’s component inputs: green to Y, blue to Pb/Cb, and the video red to Pr/Cr.
  3. Connect the separate white and red audio plugs to L and R audio inputs. Component video does not carry audio.
  4. Select the TV’s Component or YPbPr input. If the TV uses shared audio sockets for more than one input, follow its labels or manual.
  5. On the PS3, open Settings → Display Settings → Video Output Settings → Component / D-Terminal. Select the resolutions the TV supports, confirm the test display and save.

Sony documents component modes including 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i, and in some NTSC configurations 1080p. That is not a promise that every PS3, game, screen or video will output 1080p: the available choices and actual signal depend on the system, region, content and display. If a test image does not appear, do not confirm an unseen setting; allow the prompt to time out or reset video output.

Set up audio

For TV stereo, connect the cable’s white and red audio plugs to the TV’s matching L/R inputs. If the picture works but there is no sound, check that the TV is on the input associated with those audio sockets, then open Settings → Sound Settings → Audio Output Settings on the PS3 and select the analog AV connection. Sony’s audio-output guide describes assigning output to HDMI, optical digital or AV, as well as Audio Multi-Output.

For an AV receiver, connect red/white for stereo, or use the PS3’s DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) connection and a TOSLINK cable if the receiver supports the formats you need. Set the receiver to the matching input. Audio Multi-Output can send audio through more than one output, but format behavior depends on the connected equipment. Component’s three video plugs never replace the separate audio connection.

If the screen is blank, reset PS3 video output

A common cause of a blank screen is that the PS3 retained a previous HDMI or resolution setting that the analog-connected TV cannot display. To restore a standard video mode:

  1. Turn the PS3 fully off so its power indicator is red.
  2. Press and hold the power button. Keep holding until the second beep, about five seconds, then release.
  3. Wait for the picture, then configure the correct connector and supported resolutions through Settings → Display Settings → Video Output Settings.

Sony’s quick-start guide describes holding the power button until the second beep when no video is displayed.

Troubleshoot the signal

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
TV says “No signal” Confirm the PS3 is on, the TV is set to the connected input, and the cable is fully seated in AV MULTI OUT. If using a receiver, select its matching source. Try a known-working input or display and verify that it accepts the selected resolution.
Sound but no picture Check the yellow plug and video input, or verify that component plugs are in Y/Pb/Pr rather than composite sockets. Reset the PS3 video output, set the correct connector, and test with composite if available.
Green or distorted component picture Recheck Y/Pb/Pr wiring, TV input mode and PS3 output selection. The display or converter may expect another signal format. For HD Retrovision’s direct PS2/PS3 YPbPr cable, its troubleshooting guidance says to select AV MULTI / SCART in PS3 video settings.
Black-and-white picture Check for a loose or damaged video plug, the wrong input type, an incompatible PAL/NTSC signal path or converter settings.
No sound Check the red/white plugs, the TV or receiver input, and the PS3 audio route under Sound Settings → Audio Output Settings.
Receiver shows no picture on its HDMI output Some receivers do not convert incoming composite or component video to HDMI. Sony explains that the TV may need to connect to the receiver’s corresponding analog monitor output instead: Sony receiver video-routing guidance.

If the reset does not help, isolate the fault rather than assuming the console is broken: try a known-working cable and TV input, and use composite as a compatibility baseline. HD Retrovision likewise recommends checking a console and display with composite when troubleshooting component compatibility (manufacturer troubleshooting). A damaged cable, AV MULTI OUT port, TV input or console hardware can all cause failure; a broken HDMI port alone does not establish that analog output is faulty.

Know the resolution and Blu-ray limits

Composite is standard definition

Composite combines the picture signal into one yellow plug. Sony lists 480i for NTSC regions, including the United States, and 576i for PAL regions. It is widely compatible but has the least detail of the common PS3 connections.

Component can carry higher-resolution analog video

YPbPr separates the video signal and generally gives a cleaner picture than composite. It does not upscale the PS3’s output or make a TV accept unsupported modes. Supported resolution depends on the display, settings, region and content; PAL systems use 576-line standard modes where applicable, while NTSC systems use 480-line modes.

Protected video can be restricted

Sony notes that analog high-definition output for Blu-ray content is restricted under AACS on CECH-3000 and CECH-4000 series systems; certain protected video can be limited to 480i over component. Later systems should use HDMI for BD video software. Do not assume games, discs and streaming applications behave identically. HDMI is the appropriate route for protected HD video when available. Details are in Sony’s video-output documentation.

Using a PS3 with a modern HDMI-only TV

If the TV has no analog inputs, use HDMI directly when the PS3’s HDMI output works. If HDMI is damaged, an analog-to-HDMI device can bridge the connection, but it must actively convert in the correct direction: PS3 composite or component input → HDMI output. A passive cable cannot convert analog video into a digital HDMI signal.

  • If you have component output, look for a powered converter or scaler that explicitly accepts YPbPr and the PS3’s interlaced signal modes. This preserves more source detail than starting with composite.
  • If composite is your only option, a basic converter may make the picture visible on an HDMI-only TV, but it cannot recover HD detail absent from the 480i/576i source. Scaling and deinterlacing quality varies.
  • Check direction, supported input modes, output resolution, deinterlacing, power requirements and lag. Some units need USB power.
  • Do not buy a listing that says only “HDMI to AV”: that usually converts in the opposite direction. Avoid “RCA to HDMI” cables without an active converter box.

A receiver may also fail to pass analog video through its HDMI output. Confirm its conversion and routing behavior in the receiver manual before treating it as a converter.

Choose the connection that fits your setup

  • Composite-only CRT or basic setup: use a PS3-compatible AV MULTI composite cable; expect standard definition.
  • CRT or HDTV with YPbPr inputs: use a compatible component cable for the best analog image. A third-party option made for PS2/PS3 YPbPr is described by its manufacturer at HD Retrovision’s product page; confirm cable compatibility and setup before purchase.
  • TV with HDMI and working PS3 HDMI: use HDMI for the simplest HD connection and protected Blu-ray playback.
  • HDMI-only TV with damaged PS3 HDMI: choose an active component-to-HDMI converter if component is available; otherwise use a composite-to-HDMI converter with the expectation of standard-definition source quality.
  • Separate receiver audio: use analog stereo for simple TV sound or optical digital where the receiver and desired audio formats support it.
