Check the ports on the back of your Xbox 360 and TV before choosing a cable. If both have HDMI, use HDMI. If the console has no HDMI but the TV has red, green and blue component inputs, use an Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable. VGA is another option for a display with a VGA input. If the TV has HDMI only and the console does not, you need an active converter—not just a cable that changes plug shapes.

Choose a connection that matches both devices

Your Xbox 360 and TV Connection to use What to know
Both have HDMI HDMI One cable carries video and audio.
Xbox 360 has no HDMI; TV has component inputs Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable Use the red, green and blue inputs for video, plus red and white for stereo audio.
Xbox 360 has no HDMI; display has VGA Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable VGA carries video only, so connect audio separately.
Xbox 360 has no HDMI; TV has HDMI only Active component-to-HDMI converter, or active VGA-to-HDMI converter if using VGA Match the converter’s input to the console cable’s output; conversion quality and lag vary.
TV has only yellow, red and white RCA inputs Composite AV Fallback standard-definition video, not HD.

Microsoft’s component instructions distinguish component video (red, green and blue) from composite video (yellow) and identify 480p, 720p and 1080i as example HDTV settings for component: Xbox 360 component and composite connection instructions. A TV must still support the selected mode.

Identify the ports on your console and TV

Do not rely on the console’s color or the seller’s model description. Inspect the rear panel. Original Xbox 360 models vary: some have HDMI and some early units do not. Xbox 360 S and E models generally include HDMI, but confirm the actual port on your unit. The proprietary Xbox 360 AV port is separate from HDMI and accepts compatible AV cables.

  • HDMI: A flat, tapered port, usually labeled HDMI.
  • Xbox 360 AV: The wider proprietary port used by compatible component, composite and VGA cables.
  • TV component input: Three video jacks labeled Y/Pb/Pr or colored green, blue and red, often beside red/white audio jacks.
  • TV composite input: A yellow video jack with red/white audio.
  • VGA input: A 15-pin connector, often labeled VGA or PC.

For an Xbox 360 E-specific connection reference, see Xbox Support’s Xbox 360 E TV connection page. Check the exact cable connector and console port before buying an older accessory; not every cable or revision should be assumed compatible.

Connect by HDMI

Use HDMI when the console and television both have HDMI. It is usually the simplest setup because one cable carries digital video and audio.

  1. Turn off the Xbox 360.
  2. Connect an HDMI cable from the console’s HDMI port to an HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Turn on the TV and use its remote to select that exact HDMI input. TV labels vary; they may say HDMI 1, HDMI 2 or a source number.
  4. Turn on the console. If the picture is missing or the TV reports an unsupported mode, use the display-reset procedure below, then choose a supported resolution.

For initial diagnosis, connect directly to the TV rather than through a receiver, switch or converter. Microsoft’s HDMI accessory manual warns against connecting HDMI and an ordinary second AV cable to the console at the same time; a purpose-designed audio adapter is a specific exception, not a reason to attach any AV cable alongside HDMI: Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable manual.

HDMI transports the console’s signal; it does not make games render at a higher resolution. The resolution selected in the dashboard, a game’s internal rendering resolution, and any scaling done by the TV are different things. A 4K television may upscale the picture, but the Xbox 360 does not natively output 4K or HDR.

Connect with component video

Use a compatible Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable when the console lacks HDMI and the TV has component inputs. The cable has three video plugs—red, green and blue—and red/white stereo audio plugs. There are two red plugs: one belongs with the three video plugs, and the other belongs with the white audio plug. Follow the cable grouping and TV labels rather than identifying plugs by red color alone.

  1. Turn off the Xbox 360 and TV.
  2. Insert the cable’s console connector into the Xbox 360 AV port.
  3. If the cable has a TV/HDTV switch, set it to HDTV.
  4. Connect the red, green and blue video plugs to the TV’s matching component inputs.
  5. Connect the red and white audio plugs to the audio inputs associated with that component input.
  6. Turn on the TV and select Component, Component Video, or the equivalent source, then turn on the console.
  7. Choose a resolution supported by the TV in the Xbox 360 display settings.

Do not put the component cable’s yellow plug (if present) into the TV’s yellow composite input and expect HD. Component is red/green/blue video; composite uses yellow video and is standard definition. Microsoft’s connection instructions specify the HDTV switch position and component inputs for an HDTV connection.

If the TV has component video but no matching red/white audio jacks, connect video to the TV and route audio separately to compatible speakers or a receiver. Some Xbox 360 AV cables also have an optical S/PDIF output.

Connect with VGA

VGA can work with a VGA-equipped HDTV or computer monitor, particularly when the Xbox 360 has no HDMI and component inputs are unavailable. Use an Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable; generic VGA leads may not have the console-side connector or audio breakout.

  1. Turn off the console and display.
  2. Connect the cable’s Xbox 360 AV connector to the console and its VGA plug to the display’s VGA input.
  3. Connect the cable’s red and white audio plugs to the display’s associated audio input, powered speakers or receiver. If supported by the cable and receiver, optical S/PDIF is another option.
  4. Turn on the display, select VGA or PC as its source, then turn on the console.
  5. Set a resolution supported by the display.

VGA carries video, not audio. Microsoft’s VGA HD AV Cable manual describes use with VGA displays and separate audio. A VGA-to-HDMI setup also requires an active VGA-to-HDMI converter for this signal direction. Many products sold as VGA/HDMI cables work only in the reverse direction or need power.

Use composite only as a standard-definition fallback

Composite is appropriate if the TV has yellow, red and white RCA inputs and no more suitable connection is available. It produces standard-definition video, even when used with an HDTV.

  1. Turn off the console.
  2. Connect the AV cable to the Xbox 360. If it has a TV/HDTV switch, set it to TV.
  3. Connect yellow to yellow for video and red/white to the matching audio inputs.
  4. Select the TV’s AV, Composite, Video or equivalent source, then turn on the console.

Text and menus will generally appear softer on a large HDTV than with HDMI or component. A plug adapter cannot turn composite into genuine HD.

Set a compatible display resolution

On the legacy Xbox 360 dashboard, display options are commonly found under System Settings → Console Settings → Display; labels and menu placement can differ by dashboard version and region. Microsoft’s archived instructions place display and HDTV settings in the System area: Xbox 360 display settings guidance.

  1. Start with the TV’s native or recommended resolution if the Xbox 360 offers it.
  2. If the TV says “mode not supported,” select a lower mode it accepts. Try 720p if 1080i or 1080p fails.
  3. Change one setting at a time, and make sure the TV remains on the correct input.
  4. Compare the clarity of text and the responsiveness of the image; keep the mode that works best with your display.

There is no universally best setting. Component documentation lists 480p, 720p and 1080i as examples, while selectable modes depend on the console, cable and display. HDMI, component and VGA can expose different options. 1080i is interlaced, so 720p may look cleaner on some flat panels. A game’s internal rendering resolution may differ from the console’s output setting, and PAL-region equipment can have 50/60 Hz compatibility differences.

Route audio to the TV, receiver or soundbar

HDMI audio

HDMI carries audio with video. If picture works but sound does not, check mute and volume, whether the TV is routing sound to an external system, and whether an AV receiver’s input assignment is correct. Bypass the receiver and connect directly to the TV to isolate the cause.

Analog stereo

With component, composite or VGA, the red and white RCA plugs carry left and right audio. Connect them to the audio input paired with the selected video input; a TV may have separate audio jacks for component or VGA. Microsoft’s component cable troubleshooting manual emphasizes matching audio and video connections to the same TV input group.

Optical S/PDIF

If the Xbox 360 AV cable has an optical output, connect it to an optical input on a compatible receiver, soundbar or DAC, then select that input on the receiving device. On the Xbox 360, open System → Console Settings → Audio; labels vary, but this legacy path contains digital audio choices. Microsoft documents Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 options and states that Xbox 360 does not support DTS output: Xbox 360 audio configuration instructions. Use Dolby Digital 5.1 only when the receiver and full signal path support it. Optical audio requires a separate cable and cannot help a soundbar or TV that lacks an optical input.

Reset the display if the screen is blank or unsupported

The low-resolution display reset changes video settings; it is not a factory reset and does not erase profiles, games or saved data. Microsoft’s accessory manuals document this button sequence: Component cable manual and HDMI cable manual.

  1. Remove any disc and turn off the console.
  2. With the player-one controller, press and hold the Xbox Guide button.
  3. While continuing to hold Guide, turn on the console.
  4. During startup, press and hold Y while pulling the right trigger.
  5. After the display returns to its default settings, select the correct TV input and choose a supported resolution.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No picture

  1. Confirm the TV is on the exact input used by the console. TV source names vary; Microsoft lists labels such as Input, Source, AUX, Line In, Video 1 and EXT in its connection guide.
  2. Reseat both ends of the cable. For component, confirm HDTV mode and red/green/blue plugs in component inputs—not yellow composite.
  3. For HDMI, try another TV HDMI input and a known-good cable.
  4. Connect directly to the TV, bypassing a receiver, switch or converter, and perform the display reset if necessary.
  5. If the image still fails, check whether the TV accepts the selected resolution and refresh rate before suspecting console hardware.

Picture but no sound

  • For analog connections, put red/white plugs in the audio jacks associated with the selected video input.
  • For HDMI, check mute, audio routing and receiver input assignment; test direct to TV.
  • For optical, select the right input on the sound system and test Digital Stereo before configuring surround.
  • A converter may not pass audio even when it converts video; check its audio input and output requirements.

Sound but no picture

  • Check the TV input and any component cable switch.
  • Verify the video plug group: component uses red/green/blue; composite uses yellow.
  • Try the display reset if the TV rejects the selected mode.
  • For a converter, check that it accepts the console’s signal type and that conversion runs in the correct direction.

Black-and-white picture

First check for a component/composite mismatch. Composite should run yellow-to-yellow with the cable in TV mode; component should use red/green/blue with HDTV mode. A regional 50/60 Hz or PAL/NTSC compatibility issue is another possibility if the connection is correct.

“Mode not supported”

Reset the display settings, then choose 720p or another mode the TV explicitly supports. Connect directly to the TV and disable unusual scaling modes on an intervening receiver or converter. If the display still rejects the signal, test another supported connection or display.

Intermittent HDMI or lag

For signal dropouts, use a short known-good cable, try a different HDMI input, connect directly and power-cycle the TV and console; turning the TV on before the console can help isolate a handshake issue. For lag or a processed-looking picture, enable the TV’s Game Mode and disable motion smoothing or unnecessary processing. A converter or scaler can add delay, so remove it during diagnosis.

Choose cables and converters without buying the wrong thing

  • HDMI-equipped console: an ordinary reliable HDMI cable of suitable length is enough; a premium “gaming” cable does not improve the console’s rendered image.
  • No HDMI, component-equipped TV: choose a compatible Xbox 360 component AV cable. Verify the proprietary console connector, red/green/blue video, audio plugs and switch. Used cables should have a return option if possible.
  • HDMI-only TV and non-HDMI console: select an active converter with the correct analog input—component YPbPr or VGA—and HDMI output. Confirm resolution support, audio handling, power needs and return terms. Performance and latency vary.
  • Optical sound system: check that the particular AV cable has an optical port and add a standard TOSLINK cable only if needed.

A passive RCA-to-HDMI adapter generally cannot convert analog video to digital HDMI. Likewise, do not confuse an HDMI-to-VGA converter with the reverse direction required to send Xbox 360 VGA output into an HDMI television. Avoid buying based only on a “4K” label: a TV or scaler may upscale an incoming picture, but that is not native Xbox 360 4K output.
