You can connect a Sony DUALSHOCK 4 to a Windows PC either by pairing it over Bluetooth or by using a compatible micro-USB data cable. Windows usually identifies it as Wireless Controller. Connecting it is only the first step: Steam can handle many games through Steam Input, while some non-Steam games need a single controller mapper such as DS4Windows.
What you need
- A Sony DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller.
- For Bluetooth, a Windows PC with built-in Bluetooth or a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter. Microsoft says a USB adapter can add Bluetooth to a PC that does not have it: Microsoft’s Bluetooth pairing guide.
- For wired play, a micro-USB cable that supports data, not just charging. Sony lists a compatible micro-USB cable as a supported PC connection method: PlayStation’s DUALSHOCK 4 PC guide.
You do not need Sony’s discontinued USB Wireless Adaptor for wireless play if your PC already has Bluetooth or you use a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter.

Connect a PS4 controller by Bluetooth in Windows 11
1. Put the DUALSHOCK 4 into pairing mode
- Turn off the controller. If the light bar is on, hold the PS button until it turns off.
- Disconnect any USB cable from the controller.
- Hold SHARE, then hold PS.
- Keep holding both buttons until the light bar begins flashing.
These are Sony’s Bluetooth pairing steps. A steady light usually means the controller is already connected to another device; pairing mode is indicated by the flashing light bar.
2. Pair it in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Devices, then Add device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Select Wireless Controller.
- Complete any prompt and select Done.
You can also use Quick Settings: select the Network, Sound, or Battery icon beside the clock, select the Manage Bluetooth devices arrow, and choose Wireless Controller under New devices. Microsoft documents both routes in its Bluetooth pairing instructions.

After pairing, pressing the PS button should reconnect the controller when it is nearby and Bluetooth is enabled.
Connect a PS4 controller by Bluetooth in Windows 10
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but the pairing procedure remains available on existing installations.
- Put the controller into pairing mode by holding SHARE + PS until the light bar flashes.
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Select Wireless Controller, then select Done.

Connect the controller with a USB cable
- Turn on the PC.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the PC with a compatible micro-USB data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect the controller.
- Launch the game or controller software.
USB connection does not require Bluetooth pairing. If the controller only charges and does not appear in Windows, the cable is probably power-only, damaged, or not making a proper data connection. Try another micro-USB cable and a different USB port.

Check whether Windows detects the controller
Windows may call the device Wireless Controller instead of “PS4 Controller” or “DUALSHOCK 4.” That name is normal.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select Wireless Controller.
- Select Properties, then open the Test tab.
Move the sticks and press the buttons to confirm that Windows receives input. This test confirms the Windows connection, but it does not guarantee that a particular game supports the controller.
Make the controller work in games
Steam games
Steam includes PlayStation-controller support through Steam Input. Since a 2023 Steam update, PlayStation controllers generally use a game’s native PlayStation support when available and Steam Input when the game needs an input layer; they are not automatically treated identically in every game.

To check the setting for a Steam game:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Controller.
- Use the controller-support option shown there to choose the game’s default behavior, enable Steam Input, or disable it when available.
The exact choices can vary by game and Steam client version. If the controller works in joy.cpl but not in the game, change this setting and restart the game. Valve explains the relevant PlayStation-controller behavior in its Steam client update notes.

Non-Steam games
Many Windows games expect XInput, the input system commonly associated with Xbox controllers. A DUALSHOCK 4 can be visible to Windows but ignored by a game that does not support PlayStation controllers or DirectInput.
For those games, DS4Windows can translate the controller into a virtual Xbox 360 controller. The current project lists Windows 10 or newer, the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime, the Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable, and ViGEmBus among its requirements. Use one input layer for a game. Do not normally run Steam Input and DS4Windows together, because both can create overlapping physical and virtual controller inputs.
Bluetooth limitations
Sony documents feature limitations for DUALSHOCK 4 connections over Bluetooth on devices other than compatible Xperia devices. Depending on the application, these features may be unavailable:

- Rumble
- Motion sensors
- Headset-jack audio
Support varies by game and utility. USB may expose more functions, but no connection method guarantees that every application will support every DUALSHOCK 4 feature.

“Wireless Controller” does not appear
- Turn the controller off before holding SHARE + PS.
- Disconnect the USB cable while pairing.
- Make sure the light bar is flashing.
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on the PC.
- Add a USB Bluetooth adapter if the PC has no Bluetooth hardware.
- Keep the controller close to the PC.
- In Windows 11, try Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Device settings > Bluetooth devices discovery > Advanced. Microsoft lists this and other remedies in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
The controller appears but will not connect
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find the controller and select its More options button.
- Select Remove device > Yes.
- Put the controller back into pairing mode and pair it again.
Microsoft also notes that nearby USB 3.0 devices can interfere with Bluetooth. If you use a USB Bluetooth adapter, move it away from an unshielded USB 3.0 device or connect it through a short extension cable.
It connects, but the game ignores it
Test it first with joy.cpl. If Windows receives input, check the Steam game’s Properties > Controller setting. For an unsupported non-Steam game, use one compatible mapper such as DS4Windows. This is usually a game-support or input-mode issue rather than a Bluetooth pairing failure.

The game receives every input twice
Double input usually means the game sees both the physical DUALSHOCK 4 and a virtual controller created by Steam Input or DS4Windows. Use only one remapping layer. If DS4Windows is creating the virtual controller, its documentation recommends hiding the physical controller so the game sees only the virtual device, and disabling overlapping Steam remapping. The controller keeps reconnecting to the PS4
A DUALSHOCK 4 is paired with one console or device at a time. To use it with a PS4 again, connect it to the console with a compatible USB cable and press the PS button. Sony says the controller must be paired again when used with another console; see Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting guide.
Bluetooth pairing is still stuck
- Turn off and unplug the PS4 console.
- Disconnect the controller from its USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller.
- Press the reset button with an unfolded paper clip for at least five seconds.
- Put the controller into pairing mode and try the PC connection again.

Bluetooth or USB: which should you use?

If Bluetooth pairing fails, USB is the quickest way to confirm that the controller itself works. If Windows sees it but a game does not, focus on the game’s controller support and input configuration rather than repeatedly pairing the device.
