Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on October 29, 2024, that it would permanently end Concord and close Firewalk Studios, the game’s developer. Sony also said it would close mobile-focused Neon Koi and discontinue its unreleased mobile action game—but described that as a separate decision tied to a reassessment of its mobile strategy, not as a consequence of Concord.
What Sony announced
Sony said it had decided to permanently sunset Concord and close Firewalk after the game failed to attract enough players and meet its targets. In the same October 29 announcement, Sony said Neon Koi would also close and its mobile action game would not move forward. The company gave the studios different explanations: Concord’s performance for Firewalk, and a broader review of Sony’s early mobile strategy for Neon Koi. Sony’s announcement said it would seek placements for some affected employees within its global studio network where possible.

- Firewalk Studios: closed.
- Concord: permanently sunset.
- Neon Koi: closed.
- Neon Koi’s mobile action game: discontinued before release.
This was not a case of Sony canceling two released games. Concord had launched; Neon Koi’s game had not.
How quickly Concord went from launch to shutdown
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| August 23, 2024 | Concord launched worldwide on PS5 and PC as a 5v5 character-driven multiplayer shooter. Sony’s launch post presented it as the start of an evolving multiplayer service. |
| September 3, 2024 | Sony announced that the game would go offline, stopped sales, and said purchasers on PS5 and PC would receive full refunds. The shutdown announcement said Sony would explore options to reach more players, but did not promise a relaunch or a free-to-play version. |
| September 6, 2024 | The game was taken offline. |
| October 29, 2024 | Sony confirmed that Concord would not return and announced Firewalk’s closure. |
The game was on sale for less than two weeks before Sony announced it was taking it offline. Nearly two months later, the company ended the possibility of a return.

Why did Sony close Firewalk?
Sony’s public explanation was that Concord had some successful qualities but did not attract enough players, and the game missed its targets. Sony said it considered options before concluding that permanently ending the game and closing Firewalk was the best course. That is the confirmed explanation; Sony did not publish a detailed postmortem naming particular design, marketing, or management failures.
Firewalk was more than an outside studio briefly contracted to make the game. Sony and ProbablyMonsters announced a publishing partnership for Firewalk’s original multiplayer project in 2021. Sony later said Firewalk had been formed in 2018; in April 2023, Sony announced it would acquire the studio from ProbablyMonsters. The acquisition announcement described Firewalk as having nearly 150 employees at that time and as PlayStation Studios’ 20th studio. Sony framed the deal as an investment in live-service games, with Firewalk continuing work on an original PS5 and PC multiplayer title. That title became Concord. Sony’s acquisition announcement

Why was Neon Koi shut down?
Sony described Neon Koi’s closure as part of a separate decision about mobile games. It said mobile remained a growth priority, but that its early-stage effort needed to focus on projects that fit the PlayStation Studios brand and could reach a larger global audience. Neon Koi’s unreleased mobile action game did not proceed under that strategy.

The studios’ closures were announced together, but Sony did not say that Concord caused Neon Koi’s closure. The company had previously presented mobile as an area for expansion beyond consoles; its 2022 announcement welcoming Savage Game Studios, for example, described an effort to build mobile experiences. Live-service games
Sony’s decision shows that it was prepared to end a live-service project and close its developer when a game did not meet expectations. It does not show that Sony abandoned live-service games. In the closure announcement, the company said it would take lessons from Concord and continue building its live-service capabilities. The more supportable reading is that Sony remained interested in the category while becoming more selective about which projects it continued to fund.

Mobile games
Sony likewise did not announce a complete withdrawal from mobile. It said mobile remained a priority but that its strategy would refocus on projects better aligned with PlayStation Studios and capable of reaching more players worldwide. That is a narrowing of priorities, not proof that all mobile development ended.
What Sony has not disclosed
Sony’s public statements do not provide Concord’s sales, player-count targets, development budget, marketing spend, break-even point, or refund total. They also do not give a final employee count for either studio, a placement rate, or severance details. The nearly 150 Firewalk employees cited by Sony was a figure from the April 2023 acquisition announcement, not a confirmed headcount when the studio closed. Without those figures, claims about Sony’s total loss or the precise scale of the layoffs cannot be established from the company’s announcements.
