Connect an HDMI cable from the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to the monitor’s HDMI input, then select that input on the monitor. The monitor needs an HDMI input for this direct setup; HDMI carries both picture and sound, though the monitor must have audio hardware to play sound.
Connect the PS4 to the monitor
- Find the HDMI OUT port on the back of the PS4.
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the console and the other end to an HDMI input on the monitor. PlayStation’s setup instructions specify the console’s HDMI OUT port: How to set up your new PS4 console.
- Connect the PS4 power cable to the console’s AC IN port and to a power outlet.
- Turn on the monitor and PS4. Open the monitor’s input or source menu and select the HDMI input that the cable is plugged into.
If the monitor has several HDMI inputs, match the selected input to the port in use. Use the HDMI cable you already have if it works; a replacement should be a compatible High Speed HDMI or Premium High Speed HDMI cable, as PlayStation recommends.
If the monitor shows “No signal” or a blank screen
Check the connection in this order, testing the display after each change:
- Make sure both the PS4 and monitor are powered on.
- Push the HDMI connectors firmly into place at both ends, then confirm the monitor is set to the matching HDMI input.
- If the monitor has another HDMI port, move the cable to that port and select its input.
- Try a known-good compatible High Speed HDMI or Premium High Speed HDMI cable, if available.
- Connect the PS4 directly to the monitor. Temporarily remove a soundbar, receiver, capture device, switch, or other equipment between them.
- If there is still no picture, fully power off the console and monitor, unplug their power cables, wait 20 minutes, reconnect them, and check again. PlayStation also advises checking device firmware and the monitor manufacturer’s guidance for resolution or signal settings. See PlayStation’s picture and sound troubleshooting steps.
Intermediary HDMI equipment can be the cause: PlayStation notes that an HDMI-connected device that is not HDCP-compatible can prevent both picture and sound. Testing the direct console-to-monitor connection helps isolate that issue.

If there is picture but no sound
HDMI carries audio, but the monitor must support audio playback. Check that the monitor is not muted and raise its volume. Then check the PS4’s audio output settings and make sure output is set to an HDMI device; PlayStation documents the options in How to change the audio output on PS4. If you are using an intermediary device, test the PS4 connected directly to the monitor.
Resolution and HDR considerations
Resolution
The PS4’s output depends on the console model, connected display, and content. A 2013 North American PlayStation FAQ listed 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p as original PS4 HDMI video standards and said resolution adjusts automatically to the connected display. That historical statement is not a complete current specification for every PS4 model or application. Read the original PS4 FAQ.

HDR
For HDR, the display must support HDR10, and you must use an HDMI input on that display that supports HDR. PlayStation recommends connecting the PS4 directly to the display with a Premium HDMI cable. With PS4 system software 7.0 or later and HDR-capable content, enable the relevant output options at Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings: set HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic. Follow PlayStation’s PS4 HDR setup guidance and check the monitor documentation to identify its HDR-capable input.

The direct setup described here requires an HDMI input on the monitor. Do not assume a generic HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapter will work: compatibility depends on the monitor and signal-conversion direction, and the cited PlayStation setup guidance does not validate adapter combinations. Check the exact monitor model’s documentation before choosing an alternative.
