In the games, Ciri will become the main protagonist of The Witcher 4, which CD PROJEKT RED says is planned for 2028. Geralt’s story is not ending first: he is set to return in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, a new expansion scheduled for 2027. The 2028 window is a plan, not a confirmed release date.
Is Ciri replacing Geralt in The Witcher 4?
Yes—in the sense that Ciri, not Geralt, will lead the next main Witcher game. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 update identifies her as the main protagonist of The Witcher 4. That is a change in the games’ player-character focus; it does not mean Geralt’s story is being erased or that every Witcher adaptation is making the same change. CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement puts the new game’s planned release window in 2028.
The studio had announced a new Witcher saga in 2022 without giving a release window. Its later 2026 update adds the 2028 plan and names Ciri as the lead. Neither announcement establishes an exact day or month, so 2028 should be treated as a target window rather than a guaranteed launch date.
What is Geralt’s next game story?
Songs of the Past is a Witcher 3 expansion
CD PROJEKT RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past as a third expansion for The Witcher 3, with Geralt returning for the adventure. The company schedules it for 2027, but its announcement does not give an exact release date, price, or full platform list. It is an expansion to the existing game—not The Witcher 4.

How the 2027 and 2028 releases fit together
| Release | Format and focus | Timing stated by CD PROJEKT RED |
|---|---|---|
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past | Third The Witcher 3 expansion; Geralt returns | Scheduled for 2027; no exact date stated |
| The Witcher 4 | Next main game; Ciri is the main protagonist | Planned for 2028; no exact date stated |
The sequence is therefore a bridge, not an abrupt handoff: a new Geralt adventure is announced for 2027, before the planned Ciri-led main game. The dates come from the studio’s 2026 corporate update and could change.
Does Netflix replace Geralt too?
Netflix’s casting change is separate from the games’ shift to Ciri. Liam Hemsworth plays Geralt in the television adaptation’s final two seasons; Netflix has described Season 5 as the final season. Hemsworth is a new actor playing the same character, not a new protagonist taking Geralt’s place. Netflix Tudum reported in 2025 that all eight episodes of Season 4 are streaming. Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 update covers Hemsworth’s role and the series’ next steps.

Netflix also said Seasons 4 and 5 would adapt the remaining named novels in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher Saga, including Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. Netflix describes the adaptation as based on Sapkowski’s saga and has identified him as a creative consultant. The books, television adaptation, and games are distinct versions of the Witcher story; a show casting decision does not determine the games’ protagonist.
What is confirmed—and what is still unknown?
- Confirmed by CD PROJEKT RED: Ciri is the main protagonist of The Witcher 4, planned for 2028, and Geralt returns in a The Witcher 3 expansion scheduled for 2027.
- Not established in the cited announcement: exact launch dates for either game, the expansion’s price, and its complete platform list. The 2028 window is a plan, not a promise.
- Confirmed by Netflix: Liam Hemsworth plays Geralt in Seasons 4 and 5, and Season 5 is the planned final season. The cited announcements do not establish Season 5’s release date.
How large is the Witcher game series?
CD PROJEKT RED reported in its 2026 update that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had sold over 65 million copies and the game series had sold over 90 million copies. Those are company-reported sales totals, not independent estimates.
