Quick answer: You can connect a Sony DualSense PS5 controller to a Windows PC or laptop either wirelessly through Bluetooth or with a USB-C cable. Bluetooth is convenient; USB is usually the better choice for the most reliable connection and for some advanced features. Your computer should run Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, and the game itself must support controllers—successful Windows pairing does not guarantee that every PC game will recognize or use the DualSense.
Before you connect the PS5 controller
These instructions apply primarily to the official Sony DualSense wireless controller, not every third-party controller marketed as “PS5-compatible.” Sony identifies Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 as supported operating systems for DualSense Bluetooth and USB connections.
- Charge the controller before pairing or testing it.
- For Bluetooth, make sure the controller is disconnected from USB and turned off.
- Confirm that your PC or laptop has Bluetooth. Most modern Windows devices do, but a desktop or older laptop may not.
- Use a USB-C cable that supports data if you plan to connect by USB. A charging-only cable may power the controller without allowing Windows to detect it.
- Remember that controller compatibility is determined separately by each game or application.
If you do not own the controller yet, the DualSense wireless controller is the device these steps describe. Existing DualSense owners do not need to buy another controller to follow this guide.
Method 1: Connect the PS5 controller to a PC with Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the best option when you want to play without a cable. The controller must be placed into pairing mode before Windows can find it.
- Turn off the controller. If the player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until the controller switches off.
- Disconnect the USB cable. The DualSense should not be connected by USB while you start Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Enter pairing mode. Hold the Create button and the PS button at the same time. Keep holding them until the light bar begins flashing.
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn on Bluetooth. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, then turn Bluetooth on.
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller, or the equivalent DualSense entry, from the list of available devices.
- Wait for Windows to finish pairing. The light bar should blink and the player indicator should illuminate when pairing is complete.
- Open a controller-compatible game or application and test the buttons and analog sticks.
The DualSense has to be paired again when you change devices. Newer Sony support documentation describes registered pairing slots on supported controller versions, but those slots should not be confused with simultaneous active connections to several devices.

If the DualSense does not appear in the Bluetooth list
Start pairing mode again rather than repeatedly clicking the device list. The controller must be switched off, disconnected from USB, and placed into pairing mode by holding Create + PS until the light bar flashes.
If an old or failed DualSense entry is already listed in Windows, remove it first:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 10.
- Find the old controller entry.
- Choose its menu button and select Remove device.
- Turn the controller off, repeat the pairing process, and try again.
Move the controller closer to the computer and temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices while testing. If your PC does not have Bluetooth at all, a USB Bluetooth adapter for PC can add it. This is an optional solution for computers without built-in Bluetooth, not a required accessory for most newer laptops.

Method 2: Connect the PS5 controller to a PC with USB
A wired connection avoids Bluetooth pairing and is often the simplest way to test whether Windows and the controller are working correctly.
- Get a USB-C cable with data-transfer support.
- Plug the USB-C end into the port on the DualSense.
- Plug the other end directly into a USB port on the PC or laptop.
- Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect the controller.
- Launch a compatible game or application and check its controller settings.
You do not normally need to install a generic “PS5 controller driver.” Windows supplies the normal USB connection path, while Sony provides the PlayStation Accessories app for official controller firmware updates.
Why the controller charges but Windows does not detect it
The most common cause is a charging-only USB-C cable. Try another cable known to transfer files or connect another data-capable USB device with it. Also try a different USB port and connect the controller directly to the computer instead of through an unpowered or unreliable USB hub.
If Windows still does not recognize the controller, open Device Manager and look for a device with a yellow warning icon. Open its properties to view the reported error code. That can distinguish a connection problem from a Windows device or driver problem. Restart Windows, reconnect the controller directly, and test again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA USB-C data cable for DualSense can be useful if your current cable only charges, but do not buy one automatically: first check whether the cable you already have supports data.
How to use the DualSense in Steam
Steam officially supports Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, but Steam support does not mean that every Steam game accepts a controller. Check the individual game’s store information and its in-game input settings.

- Open the game’s controller or input settings and confirm that gamepad input is enabled.
- In Steam, review the controller configuration and Steam Input settings for that game.
- Try the game’s recommended Steam Input mode if the default mode does not work.
- Close other remapping utilities or software that may be capturing the controller exclusively.
- Test the DualSense in another known-compatible game or controller-testing application.
If it works elsewhere, the problem is probably specific to the original game’s input support rather than the Bluetooth or USB connection.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and the headset jack work on PC?
Not necessarily. Windows pairing only establishes the connection; the game must also implement support for the DualSense and its advanced features.
| Feature | What to expect on PC |
|---|---|
| Basic buttons and analog sticks | Usually available in games with compatible controller support, but button prompts and layout vary by game. |
| Haptic feedback | Requires support from the game. Sony notes that haptic feedback on PC may require a USB connection. |
| Adaptive triggers | Requires individual game support and may not work over Bluetooth or in unsupported titles. |
| Touchpad | Works only when the game or application recognizes and uses it. |
| Built-in microphone | Availability depends on the game, application, and selected Windows input device. |
| Headset jack | Sony says a wired connection is required for the controller headset jack on PC and Mac. |
For the broadest chance of getting supported haptics or other advanced functions, test with USB first and check the game’s specific DualSense requirements. Do not assume that Bluetooth provides every feature available on a PS5 console.
Update the controller firmware officially
Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app for Windows can update DualSense controller software. Updating is worthwhile when the controller connects inconsistently or a supported feature fails to work.
- Download and install PlayStation Accessories from Sony.
- Connect the DualSense to the PC with a data-capable USB-C cable.
- Open the app and follow its instructions to check for and install a controller update.
- Reconnect or re-pair the controller and test the game again.
Keep Windows and the controller software current, but avoid unverified “driver download” sites and third-party driver-updater tools as a first step. A normal DualSense connection does not require a generic PS5 controller driver.
Complete troubleshooting guide
Bluetooth: Windows cannot find the controller
- Turn Bluetooth on in Windows.
- Turn the DualSense off and disconnect its USB cable.
- Hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes.
- Remove an old DualSense entry from Windows and pair again.
- Move the controller closer to the computer.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth devices to reduce possible interference.
- Use a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter if the computer has no built-in Bluetooth.
USB: Windows does not recognize the controller
- Try a different USB-C cable that is confirmed to support data.
- Try another USB port.
- Connect directly to the PC instead of through a hub.
- Restart Windows and reconnect the controller.
- Check Device Manager for a warning icon and error code.
- Install the official PlayStation Accessories app and check for a firmware update.
The controller connects, but the game does nothing
- Confirm that the game supports controllers at all.
- Check the game’s input settings.
- Review Steam Input and controller configuration if you are using Steam.
- Close remapping or controller-capture software.
- Test another compatible game to determine whether the issue is game-specific.
The controller works, but advanced features do not
This may be normal. Confirm that the game supports the feature, switch from Bluetooth to USB, and check whether the game requires a particular input mode. Haptics, adaptive triggers, the headset jack, microphone behavior, and touchpad functions are not guaranteed across PC games.

Resetting should come after checking pairing mode, cables, ports, game support, and firmware. Sony’s reset procedure is:
- Turn off the PS5 console.
- Locate the small reset button on the back of the DualSense.
- Press the button with a pin or similar tool for several seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Sony states that this reset does not reconfigure the controller or erase its pairing settings. After resetting, try the PC Bluetooth or USB procedure again. If you do not have access to a PS5, prioritize the official firmware and Windows troubleshooting steps instead of repeatedly resetting the controller.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a PS5 controller to a Windows 10 PC?
Yes. Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 as supported operating systems for DualSense Bluetooth and USB connections. The game or application must separately support controller input.
Why is my PS5 controller not showing up on Bluetooth?
Turn the controller off, disconnect the USB cable, then hold Create and PS until the light bar flashes. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled in Windows, remove any old DualSense entry, move the controller closer, and try pairing again.
Can I use any USB-C cable with a PS5 controller on PC?
No. The cable must support data. A charging-only cable can power the controller while preventing Windows from detecting it.
Does every PC game support the DualSense?
No. Some games do not support controllers, and others support only basic input or require Steam Input. Advanced features such as haptics and adaptive triggers depend on the individual game.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pair the DualSense by holding Create + PS until the light flashes, then select it in Windows Bluetooth settings. For a more reliable connection—or for some haptic, headset, and other advanced features—use a data-capable USB-C cable. If the controller connects but a game ignores it, investigate that game’s controller support and Steam Input settings rather than assuming the pairing failed.
