Super Mario Galaxy returns for the 40th anniversary
The Direct opened with activities connected to the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. The original Japanese release took place on September 13, 1985. At the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto, Nintendo announced a limited-time Mario-themed ticket design, a Mario light display, and an exhibition of Super Mario illustrations and pixel art.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Nintendo also announced The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a new animated film set in the world of Super Mario Bros. Nintendo said the film would begin its worldwide release on April 3, 2026. That is a worldwide release starting date rather than a guarantee that every market will have the same theatrical schedule.
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2
The two Wii-era 3D platformers are coming to Nintendo Switch on October 2, 2025. Nintendo announced a combined physical package, while each game will also be sold separately through the eShop. Nintendo also announced two larger-than-standard amiibo figures: Mario & Luma and Rosalina & Lumas, both scheduled for April 2, 2026. An illustrated hardcover edition of Rosalina’s Storybook, based on the original Super Mario Galaxy art and story, is planned as another physical companion item.

Mario Tennis Fever — February 12, 2026

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond gets its launch date
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches December 4, 2025, alongside the Nintendo Switch version. Nintendo’s footage focused on the planet Viewros, Samus’s psychic abilities, scanning and exploration, weapons, and the Vi-O-La technological bike.
The announcement creates separate buying paths for existing Switch owners and Switch 2 owners: the game is coming to both systems, while the Switch 2 Edition is the version associated with the newer hardware. Hades II – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition supports 120 frames per second in TV mode on Nintendo Switch 2, according to Nintendo’s announcement. It also supports cross-save compatibility between Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The timing is split between formats: the Nintendo Switch digital version was announced for September 25, 2025, and physical versions were scheduled for November 20. A digital launch and a later boxed release are therefore not contradictory dates; they refer to different editions and formats.
Resident Evil Requiem
Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27, 2026. Nintendo described it as a survival-horror game set in a ruined Raccoon City, with combat, investigation, puzzles, and resource management. Players can freely select either a first-person or third-person viewpoint.

Several existing games are receiving enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Editions rather than being replaced by entirely separate sequels. The most notable examples are Super Mario Bros. If you are comparing the platform for its new releases and enhanced editions, the Nintendo Switch 2 is relevant, but the Direct does not imply that every game shown requires the newer console.

The 2026 watchlist is broader: Mario Tennis Fever arrives in February, Resident Evil Requiem follows later that month, Monster Hunter Stories 3 lands in March, and the Galaxy film begins its worldwide release in April. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Pokémon Pokopia, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Super Mario Bros. In short, this was not simply a Mario anniversary Direct. Nintendo said selected Virtual Boy games require Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers plus a dedicated accessory based on the original Virtual Boy hardware. That accessory is not a general-purpose VR headset.
