Check the console’s video output and your TV’s inputs first. If they match, connect them directly. If the console outputs an analog signal and the TV has only HDMI, use a compatible video processor that accepts that signal and outputs HDMI. The cable must match both the console and processor, so confirm the exact combination before buying.
1. Identify the console’s output and the TV’s inputs
Look at the console’s AV port and the cable you plan to use, then check the input labels on the TV. Common analog formats include composite, S-Video, component, RGB and SCART, but a console’s connector alone does not always establish which signal its cable carries.
- If the TV has the matching supported input: connect the console directly and select that input on the TV.
- If the TV has HDMI but no matching analog input: use a video processor that accepts the console’s signal and provides digital video over HDMI.
There is no single cable chart that covers every console and revision here. Verify the console model, cable signal and TV inputs rather than relying on a broad description such as “retro AV cable.”
2. Choose the connection path
Connect directly when the inputs match
Use this route if the TV supports the same signal as the console cable. Connect the cable to the console and corresponding TV inputs, then select that input. If the picture does not appear, confirm the selected input and check that the console and cable work before adding an adapter.

Convert composite or S-Video to HDMI
A processor can convert supported analog video for an HDMI display. RetroTINK’s 2X MINI instructions describe connecting a console by composite or S-Video and then connecting the processor to a modern display over HDMI: RetroTINK-2X MINI instructions. RetroTINK also advises checking that the game cartridge, console and AV cable work before purchasing.
Use a processor with broader analog input support
For a console that outputs another format, check that the processor explicitly accepts it. RetroTINK lists composite, S-Video, component, RGB and SCART inputs for the 5X Pro and describes connecting its digital video output to an HDTV: RetroTINK-5X Pro specifications and instructions. This is an example of a multi-format route, not a guarantee that every console, cable or revision is compatible.

3. Match the processor to the signal
Compare the console’s signal and the cable with the processor’s listed inputs, then confirm the processor’s output suits the TV. Manufacturer specifications illustrate why model-by-model checks matter:

4. Check latency claims in context
RetroTINK describes the 2X Pro as having “zero added latency” and says the 5X Pro’s 480i deinterlacing adds no additional lag penalty. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements of the complete setup. Total perceived delay can also involve the display, so these product descriptions do not establish end-to-end latency for your console, processor and TV combination.

5. Troubleshoot before replacing hardware
- No picture: verify the TV is on the input used by the processor or console, and check that each cable is connected to the intended input and output.
- Signal mismatch: confirm that the cable carries a format accepted by the processor. A physical plug that fits does not by itself prove the signal is supported.
- Uncertain console or cable condition: test the console, cable and game media where possible. RetroTINK specifically recommends checking the cartridge, console and AV cable before buying the 2X MINI.
- Still unsure before purchase: compare the exact console model and cable against the processor’s current manufacturer specifications rather than choosing by product category alone.
