Yes, you can connect AirPods to a Steam Deck without a Bluetooth adapter, cable, or special software. Pair them through the Deck’s built-in Bluetooth, then select them as the audio output if SteamOS does not switch automatically. The steps work on both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models, although menu wording may vary slightly between SteamOS releases.
Before you start
- Charge the AirPods and their case.
- Keep the AirPods close to the Steam Deck.
- Temporarily disconnect them from a nearby iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other Bluetooth device if they automatically reconnect there.
- For regular AirPods and AirPods Pro, leave the earbuds inside the open charging case while entering pairing mode.
- If the AirPods were paired with the Deck before, be ready to forget the old Bluetooth entry and pair them again.
Steam says most Bluetooth audio devices should work with Steam Deck, although some third-party devices can still have compatibility problems. See Valve’s Steam Deck Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
Put your AirPods in pairing mode
The AirPods must show a flashing white status light before the Steam Deck can find them.
| AirPods model | How to enter pairing mode |
|---|---|
| AirPods 1, 2, and 3; AirPods Pro 1 and 2 | Open the case with the earbuds inside. Hold the setup button on the back for about five seconds, until the light flashes white. |
| AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 | Open the case with the earbuds inside. Double-tap the front of the case until the light flashes white. |
| AirPods Max | Press and hold the listening-mode/noise-control button for about five seconds, until the status light indicates pairing mode. |
These model-specific instructions come from Apple’s guide to pairing AirPods with non-Apple devices.

Connect AirPods to Steam Deck
- Turn on the Steam Deck.
- Press the Steam button.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is disabled.
- Put the AirPods into pairing mode and wait for them to appear in the device list.
- Select the AirPods using the touchscreen or the Deck’s controls.
- Wait for the connection confirmation.
- Launch a game or play a system sound to test the connection.
In most cases, the Deck will route audio to the AirPods as soon as they connect. If sound still comes from the speakers, change the output manually.
Make AirPods the active audio output
- Open Steam > Settings > Audio.
- Check the selected output device.
- Select the AirPods, or switch to another output and then back to the AirPods.
- Disconnect other audio devices that could be receiving sound, including USB-C audio devices, other Bluetooth headphones, or headphones plugged into the 3.5-mm jack.
- If you are testing with system sounds, confirm that UI sounds are enabled.
Pairing and audio output are separate checks: the AirPods can show as connected while the Deck continues routing sound elsewhere.
If AirPods do not appear in the Bluetooth list
Work through these steps in order:
1. Check the white flashing light
If the status light is not flashing white, the AirPods are not currently advertising themselves for pairing. Repeat the model-specific pairing procedure above.
2. Enable “Show all devices”
Open Steam > Settings > Bluetooth and enable Show all devices. Valve specifically recommends this when a Bluetooth device is missing from the list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Stop nearby devices from taking the connection
Turn off Bluetooth temporarily on nearby Apple devices, or disconnect the AirPods from them. Automatic reconnection to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac can prevent the AirPods from remaining available for the Deck’s scan.
4. Forget the old AirPods entry
If the AirPods are listed but will not connect, select the existing entry and choose the option to forget or remove it. Put the AirPods back into pairing mode, scan again, and select them as a new device.

5. Restart the Steam Deck
Restart through Steam > Power > Restart, then try the pairing process again. This is preferable to resetting or reimaging the Deck for an ordinary Bluetooth problem.
6. Apply available updates
Valve recommends applying available firmware updates when a Bluetooth device does not pair correctly. AirPods firmware updating may require access to an Apple device; check Apple’s current support guidance for the requirements for your model.

If AirPods connect but there is no sound
- Open Steam > Settings > Audio and select the AirPods as output.
- Check whether another Bluetooth, USB-C, or 3.5-mm audio device is connected.

- Forget the AirPods and pair them again if reconnecting does not help.
- Restart through Steam > Power > Restart.
Can you use AirPods for Steam Deck voice chat?
AirPods support listening and talking with non-Apple devices, according to Apple. Valve also says the Steam Deck’s built-in microphone remains available while a Bluetooth audio device is connected.
That does not guarantee that every game will automatically select the AirPods microphone. For Steam voice chat or in-game chat, check the relevant input and output settings, then make a short test recording or join a test conversation if the software provides one. Microphone behavior can vary with the SteamOS version, game, and Bluetooth audio configuration.
For the most predictable voice-chat experience, a dedicated gaming headset or a wired headset with its own microphone may be a better choice. A 3.5-mm headset has a model-specific limitation: Valve says the Steam Deck LCD’s built-in microphone is unavailable while the 3.5-mm jack is in use, while the OLED’s built-in microphone can be used simultaneously.

Bluetooth audio can introduce noticeable delay, and the amount can vary by device and software configuration. AirPods are convenient for ordinary handheld play, but they should not be treated as a guaranteed zero-latency solution for competitive games.

Try this recovery sequence:
- Disconnect and reconnect the AirPods.
- Forget them in Settings > Bluetooth, then pair them again.
- Test another Bluetooth audio device. If it also lags, the issue may affect the Deck’s Bluetooth audio connection rather than the AirPods specifically.
- If you are comfortable using Desktop Mode, inspect the available Bluetooth audio codec settings. Valve mentions changing to another A2DP codec, such as SBC or aptX Low Latency, but SteamOS does not necessarily expose the same choices on every installation, and AirPods should not be assumed to support aptX Low Latency.
If low latency matters most, use wired 3.5-mm audio, a USB-C audio device, or a gaming headset using a purpose-built wireless protocol. A USB-C accessory occupies the Deck’s USB-C port, which can make charging or docking less convenient.
AirPods features that do not carry over
AirPods work with the Steam Deck as ordinary Bluetooth headphones or a headset, not as a fully integrated Apple accessory. Apple states that Siri is unavailable when AirPods are connected to a non-Apple device. Other Apple-specific features should not be assumed to behave exactly as they do with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
AirPods versus other audio options
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods over Bluetooth | Convenience and using hardware you already own | Possible latency; microphone and chat behavior may need configuration; Apple-only features are unavailable |
| Wired 3.5-mm headphones | Simple setup and avoiding Bluetooth delay | Uses the headphone jack; on Steam Deck LCD, the built-in microphone is unavailable while the jack is used |
| USB-C headset or adapter | Wired audio without using the 3.5-mm jack | Occupies the USB-C port and may complicate charging or docking |
| Dedicated gaming headset | Lower-latency gaming, predictable chat, physical controls, or long sessions | Requires another purchase and may use a different wireless or wired connection |
You do not normally need to buy a Bluetooth dongle: the Steam Deck already supports Bluetooth audio. Buying AirPods specifically for Steam Deck gaming may be poor value if your priority is competitive latency, a gaming-focused microphone, or long battery life.
How to disconnect or forget AirPods
To stop using them temporarily, disconnect the AirPods from the Steam Deck’s Bluetooth settings or return them to their case. To remove the saved pairing, open Steam > Settings > Bluetooth, select the AirPods entry, and choose the forget/remove option. You can pair them again later by repeating the white-light pairing procedure.
SteamOS labels can change slightly in future updates. The menu paths and troubleshooting steps above reflect the official Steam Deck guidance available as of August 18, 2026.
