Most newer Xbox Wireless Controllers connect to a Chromebook by Bluetooth. Older Xbox One models may not have Bluetooth, and Xbox 360 controllers generally need a wired connection or a compatible receiver. If wireless pairing is unavailable or unreliable, connect the controller with a USB data cable. Pairing only establishes the Chromebook connection; the game, app, browser, or cloud service must also support gamepad input.
Before you start: check compatibility
- Controller: Xbox Series X|S controllers and Xbox One S or later revisions generally support Bluetooth. Some earlier Xbox One controllers use Xbox Wireless only and do not. Xbox 360 controllers generally require a wired connection or a compatible receiver; do not assume every wireless Xbox 360 adapter works with ChromeOS.
- Chromebook: Select the time in the bottom-right corner. If a Bluetooth control appears, the Chromebook has Bluetooth. Google lists gaming controllers among supported Chromebook peripherals, but support can vary by model, cable, application, and ChromeOS version (Google’s supported-peripherals guidance).
- Power: Charge the controller or install fresh batteries.
- Availability: Disconnect the controller from an Xbox console, phone, tablet, or another computer before pairing.
- Software: Install available ChromeOS updates. School- or work-managed Chromebooks can restrict Bluetooth, Android apps, Linux, or gaming services; contact the administrator if settings are unavailable.
- Wired option: Have a data-capable USB-C, USB-A-to-USB-C, or micro-USB cable, plus an adapter if the Chromebook lacks the required port.
Method 1: connect the Xbox controller by Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller. Press the Xbox button. If it does not illuminate, replace or recharge the batteries.
- Enter pairing mode. Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds. Release it when the Xbox button flashes rapidly. On most current controllers, the button is on the upper edge near the USB port, although placement varies by model.
- Open Chromebook Bluetooth. Select the time in the bottom-right corner, select Bluetooth, and turn Bluetooth on.
- Start pairing. Select + Pair new device, wait for the scan, then choose Xbox Wireless Controller. Follow any on-screen instructions. This is the current ChromeOS path described by Google’s Bluetooth instructions.
- Confirm the link. Reopen the Bluetooth panel and check that the controller is under Currently connected. The Xbox button should stop flashing and remain lit.
Paired means ChromeOS remembers the controller; connected means it is linked now; working in a game means that particular application is receiving and interpreting its inputs.
Method 2: connect by USB
- Turn on the Chromebook.
- Connect the controller directly to a Chromebook USB port with a compatible data cable. Use USB-C to USB-C, USB-A to USB-C, or micro-USB as required by the controller.
- Wait several seconds for ChromeOS to detect it, then open the target game or service and test the controls.
- A charge-only cable can power the controller without carrying input data.
- Try another cable if the controller only charges; internal damage can leave charging functional while data transfer fails.
- During setup, bypass a USB hub or dock and connect directly to the Chromebook. Try another port if available.
- USB-C ports and adapters can have different capabilities, so the cable and adapter affect detection.
- Do not assume every Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is supported by ChromeOS.
Test the controller in a game or service
- Connect the controller before launching the game when possible.
- Open a controller-supported browser game, Android game, Linux game, Steam title, or cloud-gaming service.
- Move both analog sticks and the directional pad.
- Press A, B, X, and Y, then test the triggers and shoulder buttons.
- Check that the game’s on-screen prompts respond. If the game has an input or controller menu, select the controller there.
If it works in one game but not another, pairing is probably successful and the difference is application compatibility or configuration. A browser-based gamepad tester can indicate whether the browser receives input, but it is not an official ChromeOS diagnostic.
Use an Xbox controller with Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox’s official cloud-gaming page lists a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB, Google Chrome as a supported browser, a high-speed internet connection, a supported device, applicable account or subscription access, and a cloud-playable game.

- Start a controller-supported game.
- If there is no response, close and reopen the game after connecting the controller.
- Try a second cloud game to determine whether the problem is specific to one title.
A connected controller cannot prevent streaming latency or failures caused by Wi-Fi quality, browser problems, account access, or service availability. Xbox’s catalog and access rules can change, so check the current official page rather than relying on a fixed game count or plan name.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Confirm it is powered on.
- Hold the Pair button again until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
- Move it close to the Chromebook.
- Disconnect it from nearby consoles and other devices.
- Turn Chromebook Bluetooth off and on, then restart the Chromebook.
- Install available ChromeOS updates.
- Check whether that controller revision actually supports Bluetooth.
- Remove old controller entries and pair again.
Google also recommends checking charge and support, reducing interference, and restarting Bluetooth; see its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

It appears but will not connect
- Select it under previously connected devices and choose Connect.
- Use Forget or Unpair, power-cycle the controller, restart the Chromebook, and repeat pairing.
- Ensure it is not still connected to another nearby device.
- If ChromeOS requests an unexpected PIN, do not invent one; contact the controller manufacturer.
It connects but buttons do nothing
- The game may not support controllers or may expect keyboard and mouse input.
- Close and reopen the game after connecting the controller.
- Check the game’s controller settings and layout.
- Test another controller-supported title, then try USB.
- Browser games, Android apps, Linux applications, Steam, and cloud services expose controllers differently. A controller can work in one environment and fail in another.
It keeps disconnecting
- Charge or replace batteries.
- Keep the devices nearby and reduce wireless interference.
- Close unnecessary tabs and apps.
- Toggle Bluetooth, restart the Chromebook, or forget and re-pair the controller.
- Use USB to avoid wireless dropouts.
USB is not recognized
- Try a different known data cable.
- Try another Chromebook port.
- Remove the hub or dock and connect directly.
- Restart the Chromebook with the controller connected.
- Test the controller on another compatible device.
If it only charges and never appears or produces input, the cable, port, or controller model is the likely fault; this is not proof that the controller itself is defective.
Bluetooth or USB: which should you use?
| Connection | Advantages | Trade-offs | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | No cable; convenient for cloud gaming; leaves USB ports free. | Uses controller battery; can suffer interference, dropouts, or pairing conflicts; unavailable on some older Xbox One controllers. | Newer Bluetooth-capable controllers and cable-free play. |
| USB | No pairing; usually easier to diagnose; avoids wireless interference; cable can supply power. | Requires a suitable data cable; connector, port, hub, and cable quality matter. | Older controllers, troubleshooting, and players who prefer a direct connection. |
When replacing hardware makes sense
You may not need to buy anything if the controller already works by USB. If it lacks Bluetooth or remains unreliable, consider a newer Xbox Wireless Controller or a wired controller whose manufacturer explicitly documents Chromebook or ChromeOS support. A verified data cable is usually the simplest inexpensive fallback. Do not assume that a controller advertised for Xbox or Windows exposes identical features on ChromeOS; vibration, headset audio, paddles, profiles, and remapping can depend on the exact model and application. Wireless dongles should be avoided unless the manufacturer specifically confirms ChromeOS support.
