The correct way to connect an Xbox headset to a PC depends on its connection standard. Use a 3.5 mm cable for a wired headset, Bluetooth for a Bluetooth-capable model, the Xbox Wireless Adapter for compatible Xbox Wireless headsets, or USB-C only when the headset supports USB audio. After connecting, select the headset separately for Windows output and microphone input.
These instructions focus on Windows 11, whose menus may vary slightly by update. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Identify your headset first
“Xbox headset” describes a product family, not one universal wireless standard. Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth are separate technologies, and USB-C may provide charging only on some models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Headset type | Recommended PC connection |
|---|---|
| Xbox Stereo Headset | Compatible 3.5 mm headset jack |
| 3.5 mm Xbox-compatible headset | PC headset jack, or a controller route that works with your setup |
| Xbox Wireless Headset | Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless Adapter, or model-supported USB-C |
| USB-C headset | USB-C only if the model supports USB audio |
| Xbox console-only wireless headset | Check the model’s compatibility documentation; do not assume direct PC support |
Microsoft lists Bluetooth, the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, and USB-C as possible PC connection routes for compatible Xbox headsets. Check the official Xbox headset category and your exact model’s manual.

- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
Before connecting
- Charge the headset or install working batteries.
- Unmute and unfold or extend the microphone.
- Disconnect the headset from an Xbox console, phone, or another PC.
- Confirm that your PC has the required jack, Bluetooth, USB port, or USB-C port.
- Keep the headset close to the PC during pairing.
- Install current Windows, Bluetooth, audio, and PC-manufacturer drivers.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance identifies battery level, pairing mode, range, drivers, and updates as common causes of connection failures.
Connect a wired Xbox headset with 3.5 mm
- Plug the headset fully into a compatible PC headset jack. Laptops commonly use one combined headphone-and-microphone jack.
- If a desktop has separate headphone and microphone ports, use a compatible headset splitter when the headset has one combined four-pole plug.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the headset.
- Under Input, select its microphone.
- Use Windows’ microphone test to confirm that your voice is detected.
The Xbox Stereo Headset is specified for Windows 10/11 devices with a suitable 3.5 mm jack.
Using the headset through an Xbox controller
An Xbox Wireless Controller has a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack and can connect to Windows through Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless. However, a controller’s successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that its headset jack will provide full game audio and microphone support on every PC configuration. USB connection, controller firmware, Windows drivers, and the controller revision can affect the result.

Windows 11
- Turn on the headset and put it into its model-specific Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth, select Add device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Select the headset when it appears.
- After pairing, open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the headset under Output and its microphone under Input.
- Test playback and microphone recording.
See Microsoft’s current Bluetooth pairing instructions if the labels differ on your Windows build.
Windows 10 legacy path
On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, turn on Bluetooth, choose Add Bluetooth or other device, select Bluetooth, and choose the headset. These are legacy instructions because Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.

Bluetooth limitations
Bluetooth is not Xbox Wireless. A headset that connects wirelessly to an Xbox console may require an Xbox Wireless Adapter for its Xbox Wireless connection on PC, even if it also supports Bluetooth.
When the microphone becomes active, some Bluetooth configurations switch to a hands-free audio profile and sound quality may decrease. That behavior does not necessarily indicate a defective headset. A PC without built-in Bluetooth can use a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter. Bluetooth LE Audio is also not universal: Microsoft requires compatible Windows 11 hardware, drivers, codec support, and a compatible headset, and it is not supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 21H2. See Microsoft’s LE Audio requirements.
Connect through the Xbox Wireless Adapter
Use this route when the headset supports Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth is unavailable, unreliable, or lacks the features you need. Do not assume every Xbox headset supports the adapter.
- Plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows into a USB port.
- Allow Windows to detect and configure it.
- Turn on the headset and put it into its Xbox Wireless pairing mode.
- Press the adapter’s pairing button if the adapter requires it.
- Wait for the headset and adapter indicators to confirm pairing.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the headset for both output and input.
- Test game audio and the microphone.
Pairing buttons and indicator behavior vary by adapter and headset. Follow the exact model manuals rather than applying one button sequence to every product.
Connect through USB-C
USB-C is model-specific. On some headsets it carries USB audio; on others it is used only for charging or firmware updates. A charge-only cable will not provide USB audio.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect the headset with a compatible, data-capable USB-C cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect it.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the headset under Output and Input.
- Run the microphone test.
If it does not appear, try another cable and USB port, then check the headset’s specifications for USB-audio support.

Select the headset for sound and chat
- Select the speaker icon on the taskbar.
- Open the available output-device list and choose the Xbox headset.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the headset and check its volume and mute state.
- Under Input, select the headset microphone.
- Run Microphone test.
Windows and a game can use different devices. If the microphone works in Windows but not in a game, open the game’s audio settings, select the headset for voice input and output if available, check push-to-talk and voice-chat mute settings, verify Windows microphone permission, and restart the game after changing devices.
Microsoft’s guidance for Windows sound problems and microphone problems provides additional tests.
What the Xbox Accessories app can and cannot do
The Xbox Accessories app may provide firmware updates, button mapping, and supported headset or accessory customization. The Xbox Stereo Headset product page specifically mentions audio customization through the app on supported Xbox and Windows devices.
The app is not required for every basic headset connection. It cannot add Bluetooth to a PC, make an incompatible wireless headset compatible, or guarantee that every headset model will expose the same features.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Headset is not listed | Low battery, wrong pairing mode, another device connected, Bluetooth disabled | Charge it, disconnect other devices, move closer, restart Bluetooth and the PC, remove the old device entry, and pair again. |
| Connected but no sound | Wrong Windows or game output, muted headset, HDMI or speaker device still selected | Select the headset from the taskbar and Sound settings, check physical volume, select it in the game, and run the Windows audio troubleshooter in Get Help. |
| Microphone is not detected | Muted or retracted microphone, wrong input, permissions, splitter or controller path | Unmute it, select it under Sound > Input, run Microphone test, check permissions, and test a direct PC connection. |
| Bluetooth audio becomes poor during chat | Bluetooth hands-free profile, driver or compatibility limitation | Update drivers, re-pair, try USB-C or wired audio, or use the Xbox Wireless Adapter if the model supports it. |
| Frequent disconnections | Low battery, range, interference, drivers, automatic switching to another device | Charge the headset, keep it near the PC, temporarily remove other Bluetooth connections, move USB 3.0 hubs away from the Bluetooth antenna, update drivers, and pair again. |
| No Bluetooth option on the PC | No Bluetooth hardware or missing driver | Check Device Manager and the PC specification, install the manufacturer driver, add a USB Bluetooth adapter, or use wired, USB-C, or Xbox Wireless Adapter connectivity. |
Which connection method should you choose?
| Method | Advantages | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm directly to PC | Simple and avoids wireless pairing | Reliable everyday game audio and chat |
| 3.5 mm through controller | Convenient while using a controller | Users willing to verify controller-jack support on their PC |
| Bluetooth | No cable or dedicated Xbox adapter | Compatible laptops and casual PC use |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter | Uses the Xbox Wireless route for compatible accessories | Owners of supported Xbox Wireless headsets |
| USB-C audio | Direct wired digital connection where supported | Headsets whose specifications explicitly support USB audio |
For the fewest variables, start with a direct wired connection. Choose Bluetooth for convenience when both devices support it. Choose the Xbox Wireless Adapter for a compatible Xbox Wireless headset when Bluetooth is unsuitable. Treat USB-C as an audio connection only when the model documentation confirms it.
