You can connect a modern Xbox Wireless Controller to a Windows PC in three ways: with a USB cable, Bluetooth, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter. Use USB first for the quickest and most reliable setup, Bluetooth for convenient wireless play, and the Xbox Wireless Adapter when Bluetooth is unavailable or unsuitable.
These instructions are intended for current Xbox Wireless Controllers on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Older Xbox One, Xbox 360, Elite, and third-party controllers may support different connection methods.
Choose the right connection method
| Method | Best for | What you need | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB | Fast setup, troubleshooting, and reliable play | A compatible data-capable USB cable | A charging-only cable will not transmit controller data |
| Bluetooth | Wireless play without a receiver | A Bluetooth-enabled PC and a Bluetooth-compatible controller | Some features, including certain headset functions, may not work identically over Bluetooth |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter | Desktop PCs without suitable Bluetooth or users who want Xbox Wireless | An Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows | It is different from a generic Bluetooth adapter |
Microsoft lists the current Xbox Wireless Controller as compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11, with Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, and USB-C connectivity. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the preferable actively supported platform.
Before you start
- Turn on the PC and install available Windows updates.
- Charge the controller or install fresh batteries. The current controller uses AA batteries or a compatible rechargeable pack.
- Identify your controller. Not every Xbox One controller has Bluetooth, and an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller does not pair through ordinary Bluetooth.
- Have either a known-good data USB cable, built-in Bluetooth or a USB Bluetooth adapter, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
- Keep the controller near the PC during wireless setup.
Method 1: Connect the controller with USB
- Turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button.
- Connect it directly to the PC with a compatible USB-C data cable. Avoid an unpowered hub while troubleshooting.
- Wait several seconds while Windows detects and configures the controller.
- Open a game and check its controller settings.
USB is the best first diagnostic method because it eliminates Bluetooth pairing, radio interference, and wireless-driver problems. If the controller powers on but Windows does not detect it, try another cable: some USB-C cables provide power only and cannot carry data.

A wired connection does not require Bluetooth. For supported models, the Xbox Accessories app may also require a compatible USB-C data cable for detection and updates.
Method 2: Pair through Bluetooth
Windows 11
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
- Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button starts flashing.
- On the PC, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose the Xbox controller when it appears, then select Done.
Windows should list the controller as connected, and the Xbox button should stop flashing. You can also open the network, sound, or battery controls near the clock, select the Bluetooth control, and choose Manage Bluetooth devices.
Windows 10
Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. Put the controller into pairing mode with its Pair button, then select it from the list.
If your desktop has no Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add it. That adapter uses standard Bluetooth; it is not an Xbox Wireless Adapter.

Method 3: Use an Xbox Wireless Adapter
- Plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows into a USB port.
- Allow Windows to install its driver.
- Press the adapter’s Pair button.
- Turn on the controller and hold its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Wait for the adapter and controller lights to stop flashing.
- Test the connection in a game or with
joy.cpl.
The Xbox Wireless Adapter is a proprietary Xbox Wireless receiver. A generic Bluetooth dongle is not an interchangeable substitute. If the adapter is not recognized, try another USB port, avoid an unpowered hub, restart the PC, install Windows updates, and check Device Manager. Microsoft has also distributed Xbox Wireless Adapter reliability updates through Windows Update.
Check whether Windows recognizes the controller
Use the Game Controllers panel
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the Xbox controller and choose Properties.
- Test the buttons, triggers, sticks, and D-pad.
If the controls respond here, Windows is receiving input. A game that still fails may have its own controller setting, launcher conflict, remapping layer, or compatibility problem.
You can also confirm the device under Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then test it inside the game’s input menu.
Update firmware with Xbox Accessories
Firmware updates are not required before every connection, but they can resolve compatibility or stability problems. Install or open the Xbox Accessories app in Windows, then:

- Keep the controller connected until the update finishes.
- Reconnect or restart the controller afterward.
Do not disconnect the controller during an update. The app can also provide button mapping and profiles for supported devices, but it is not required for ordinary USB or Bluetooth gameplay. Features vary by controller model and connection method.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Confirm that the PC has Bluetooth enabled or that a USB Bluetooth adapter is installed.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again.
- Turn the controller off and back on.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Move the controller closer to the PC.
- Charge the controller or replace its batteries.
- Remove old Xbox controller entries from Bluetooth settings.
- Restart the PC and update the Bluetooth driver.
- Try USB to determine whether the issue is wireless-specific.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth pairing guide also recommends checking pairing mode, range, battery level, Windows updates, and drivers.
The controller appears but will not connect
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, find the controller, select the … menu, choose Remove device, restart Bluetooth or the PC, and pair it again. Removing and re-adding a stuck Bluetooth device is a recommended Windows recovery step.
The controller keeps disconnecting
- Replace or recharge the batteries.
- Move the controller closer and reduce obstructions.
- Update Bluetooth and controller firmware.
- Temporarily disconnect other nearby wireless devices.
- If using a USB Bluetooth adapter, move it away from USB 3.0 ports with an extension cable. Unshielded USB 3.0 devices can interfere with Bluetooth.
- Remove and re-pair the controller.
- Test with USB.
See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance for driver and interference checks.

Windows sees it, but a game does not
- Connect the controller before starting or restarting the game.
- Test it with
joy.cpl. - Check the game’s controller or input menu.
- Check Steam Input or the relevant launcher’s controller settings.
- Temporarily disable duplicate remapping programs and virtual controllers.
- Disconnect other gamepads, racing wheels, and flight sticks.
- Confirm that the game supports controller input.
- Try USB to rule out a wireless problem.
Steam, the Xbox app, the Microsoft Store, Epic Games, and individual games can handle controller input differently. A controller recognized by Windows is not guaranteed to work with every game or to display Xbox button prompts.
The game shows PlayStation prompts
This usually indicates how the game or launcher identifies the input device, not a failed connection. A remapping layer may make an Xbox controller appear as a generic or different gamepad. Check native controller support and launcher input settings before changing the physical connection.
The headset does not work through Bluetooth
Do not assume that every controller feature works identically over Bluetooth. Depending on the controller, PC, and Windows version, headset functionality may be limited. Try USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for more predictable behavior, then choose the correct input and output devices under Settings > System > Sound.
The Xbox button keeps flashing
A flashing Xbox button normally means the controller is searching for a connection. Confirm that Bluetooth pairing mode or adapter pairing mode is active, keep the controller close to the PC, and remove the old device entry before pairing again. USB should connect it without wireless pairing.

- Use USB for the fastest setup, competitive play, firmware maintenance, or troubleshooting.
- Use Bluetooth if your controller supports it and your PC already has Bluetooth. It avoids a receiver and is convenient for casual wireless play.
- Use an Xbox Wireless Adapter if the PC lacks suitable Bluetooth or you specifically want Xbox Wireless rather than standard Bluetooth.
- Use an Xbox 360 receiver for an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller. It cannot be paired through ordinary Bluetooth.
Current Xbox Wireless Controllers support Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless, but Bluetooth support varies among older Xbox One revisions. Elite controllers and third-party Xbox-licensed controllers also vary by exact model. Check the model’s documentation before assuming a wireless method will work.
For the least uncertainty, connect by USB first and verify the controls with joy.cpl. Once Windows recognizes the controller, switch to Bluetooth or an Xbox Wireless Adapter if you prefer wireless play.
