You can connect a Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2) to a Windows PC with a USB cable using Meta Quest Link, wirelessly with Air Link, or wirelessly with Steam Link for SteamVR. Start with USB Link if you want the most dependable setup to diagnose: install Meta’s current PC software, connect a high-speed USB 3 cable, deny the headset’s data-access prompt, then enable Link.
Connecting the headset can mean different things: streaming PC VR games, playing SteamVR titles, viewing a PC environment, transferring files, or charging. These are not interchangeable. Plugging in a cable may charge the headset or expose its storage without starting PC VR; PC VR also requires a suitable computer and the right connection method.
What you need before connecting
For any PC VR connection
- A Quest 2 that has completed its initial setup and is signed in to a Meta account.
- A Windows PC capable of running the PC VR games you want to play. A gaming desktop or laptop with a discrete GPU is a much better candidate than a thin laptop or integrated graphics system, but there is no single GPU requirement for every Link game. Compatibility and performance depend on the software and game.
- Current headset software and the current Meta PC installer from Meta’s Quest setup page. Meta branding and menu labels can change, so use the installer offered there rather than an old Oculus download.
For USB Link
Use a high-speed USB 3-capable data cable, connected directly to the PC. The USB-C shape alone says nothing about speed: some cables are charge-only or USB 2, and a cable that works for file transfer may still be unsuitable for stable PC VR. Meta’s official Link cable is one option, not a requirement. Avoid hubs, splitters, and extensions while setting up or troubleshooting.
For wireless streaming
Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet when possible, and connect the headset to the same local network on 5-GHz Wi-Fi. A Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router can provide more capacity, but it does not guarantee low latency. Distance, walls, channel congestion, mesh-node routing, client isolation, and other network traffic all matter. Steam’s guidance specifically recommends a wired PC and at least 5-GHz Wi-Fi for the headset (Steam Link announcement).

For SteamVR
Install Steam and SteamVR on the PC if you intend to play Steam VR titles. A regular flat-screen Steam game does not become a VR game just because the headset is connected; the game itself must support VR.
Method 1: Connect with a USB cable using Meta Quest Link
- Install the PC software. Download the current Meta Quest software from Meta’s setup page, install it, and sign in with the Meta account associated with the headset. Let any software or driver updates finish; restart the PC if the installer requests it.
- Connect the headset. Turn on the Quest 2. Plug a USB 3-capable cable into a high-speed PC USB port and then into the headset’s USB-C port. On a desktop, use a direct rear motherboard port if detection is unreliable.
- Answer the data prompt correctly. If the headset asks whether the connected computer may access data, choose Deny for PC VR Link. This data-access prompt is separate from the Link launch prompt. If you choose Allow by mistake, disconnect the cable and reconnect it.
- Launch Link. In the headset, open Quick Settings or the system menu and select the Link or Quest Link panel. Choose the connected PC and select Launch or Enable when prompted. Menu names can vary with headset software.
- Start a game. Launch a Meta PC VR title from the Meta PC library. For a SteamVR title, open Steam on the PC and launch the game; if SteamVR does not start automatically, open SteamVR first.
If the PC is missing from the headset’s list, check that the Meta PC app is open and signed in, the headset is awake, and the cable is connected directly. Disable Air Link while testing the wired connection, then restart both devices if needed.

Method 2: Connect wirelessly with Air Link
- Prepare the network. Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet if possible. Connect the headset to the same local network, using 5 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz. For initial pairing, avoid guest Wi-Fi and temporarily disable a VPN.
- Enable Air Link on the PC. Open the Meta PC software and enable Air Link in its device or Link settings. The exact settings path can change between software versions.
- Pair from the headset. Open Quick Settings or the system menu, select the Link or Quest Link panel, and turn on Air Link. Select the detected PC, confirm a pairing code if one appears, and launch the wireless Link environment.
- Adjust for smooth play. If the image stutters or looks compressed, bring the headset closer to the access point, reduce competing network traffic, and lower Link render resolution or refresh rate before raising settings. Test a less demanding game to help distinguish network trouble from PC rendering limits.
Both devices need to be visible on the same local network; internet access on both is not enough if a guest network, VLAN, mesh configuration, or client-isolation setting prevents them from discovering each other. Air Link frees you from a cable, but its latency and image quality can vary with wireless conditions.
Method 3: Use Steam Link for wireless SteamVR
Steam Link is a separate Steam-focused streaming route, not another name for Air Link. Steam’s support documentation lists Windows 10 or newer, Steam and SteamVR, a compatible GPU, a wired PC-to-router connection, a 5-GHz-or-better wireless router, and Quest 2 among supported headsets. Its GPU guidance includes NVIDIA GTX 970 or better and AMD RX 570 or better, with exceptions for RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT due to hardware-encoding limitations. Requirements may change, so check Steam’s current support guidance for the latest details.

Steam Link is a sensible choice if your main goal is wireless SteamVR and your PC and network meet Steam’s requirements. It is less suitable if you need Meta’s broader PC Link environment, have weak or segmented Wi-Fi, or need the most consistent image and latency you can get; begin with wired Link in those cases.
Choose the connection that fits your use
| Method | Cable required? | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB Quest Link | Yes | Consistent PC VR and a straightforward baseline for troubleshooting | Restricts movement; cable and USB port quality matter |
| Air Link | No | Wireless access to Meta PC VR | Depends on local Wi-Fi quality and network setup |
| Steam Link | No | Wireless SteamVR gaming | Steam-focused; still requires compatible PC hardware and a strong local network |
| Virtual Desktop | No | Users who want a separate paid wireless desktop and PC VR app with extensive streaming controls | Separate workflow and paid app; wireless results still depend on the network. Official site: Virtual Desktop |
No wireless method is universally best. The headset software version, PC’s GPU encoder, router, distance, channel congestion, game, and bitrate settings can all affect results.

Fix common connection problems
The PC does not detect the Quest 2
- Close the Meta PC app and disconnect the cable at both ends.
- Restart the PC and headset, then reconnect directly to another USB 3 port.
- Remove any hub, splitter, or extension. Inspect the cable and connectors for damage or looseness.
- Reopen the Meta PC app and reconnect the headset before launching Link.
- Try another known-good high-speed cable or another PC. If necessary, update the PC’s USB drivers.
Meta support guidance also recommends trying another USB 3 port, checking drivers and the cable, removing extensions, and restarting devices (Meta support discussion). If security software may be blocking the runtime, temporarily check its firewall or antivirus rules rather than leaving protection disabled.
The headset says USB 3 is required, or the cable test is slow
The cable may be USB 2, charge-only, damaged, or limited by a USB 2 port, hub, or extension. Try a direct rear motherboard port and a different cable with clearly specified USB 3 data support. USB-C is only the connector shape; it does not guarantee a high-speed Link connection.

You allowed computer access to data
For PC VR, the data-access choice is not the Link choice. Disconnect and reconnect the cable, choose Deny on the data prompt, then choose Enable Meta Quest Link or its current equivalent. Meta support describes this distinction in its Link troubleshooting guidance.
Air Link cannot find the PC
- Confirm both devices are on the same local network, not a guest network or isolated mesh segment.
- Check that Air Link is enabled in both the Meta PC app and headset.
- Temporarily disable a VPN and check Windows network discovery or firewall rules.
- Confirm the Meta PC app and runtime are running; client isolation on the router can prevent discovery.
- Restart the PC and headset. If the problem persists, Meta support guidance suggests checking or restarting the Oculus VR Runtime Service.
Black screen, three dots, or endless loading
- Exit Link and restart the headset and PC.
- For a cable test, turn off Air Link, reconnect directly to another USB port, and try another cable.
- Update the Meta PC software, headset software, GPU driver, and SteamVR.
- Close overlays or other VR software that may conflict, then reduce render resolution and refresh rate.
- Test the Meta PC environment before starting SteamVR. If only SteamVR fails, troubleshoot SteamVR rather than repeatedly reinstalling headset software.
A factory reset is not a sensible first step: it will not fix a weak cable, blocked runtime, unsupported GPU, or network segmentation.
Stuttering, pixelation, or high latency
- Wired stutter: Check USB port and cable, USB controller drivers, GPU load, and render settings.
- Air Link stutter: Check Wi-Fi signal and congestion, mesh routing, router placement, and bitrate.
- Steam Link stutter: Check the local network path, SteamVR rendering load, and hardware encoding.
- Low frame rate: Reduce game graphics settings or resolution; a connection cannot make an underpowered PC render faster.
- Pixelation: Wireless bitrate or available bandwidth may be limiting image quality.
Connection quality and PC rendering performance are separate problems: a strong network cannot compensate for a GPU that cannot render the game, and a powerful GPU cannot remove wireless interference.
The headset loses battery during Link
USB Link may charge slowly, maintain charge, or still lose charge during a demanding session. The result depends on the PC port’s power, cable, headset load, and power management, so a Link cable is not a guarantee of a full battery throughout play.

Check that Steam and SteamVR are installed and running on the PC, that the title supports VR, and that the selected streaming method is connected before launching it. If Link itself works but SteamVR does not, focus troubleshooting on SteamVR and the game rather than the headset cable or wireless pairing.
Quick Recap
Disconnect safely
- Exit the Link environment from the headset.
- Close SteamVR before disconnecting when practical.
- For USB Link, unplug the cable after leaving Link; avoid yanking the connector or sharply bending a fiber-optic cable.
