Owncast and YouTube are separate streaming destinations, so each has its own server URL and stream key. To connect an encoder to Owncast, use Owncast’s RTMP address and key; to send a broadcast to YouTube, use the URL and key shown for that YouTube stream in Live Control Room. One ordinary encoder output set to Owncast will not also send the stream to YouTube.
Understand the two destinations and keys
Owncast is the receiving server for one broadcast destination. YouTube is another destination. Each service supplies its own RTMP server address and stream key, and the credentials are not interchangeable. The encoder sends video to whichever destination its output is configured for.
- Owncast: use the Owncast server address and a key managed in the Owncast admin area.
- YouTube: use the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube stream in Live Control Room.
Owncast’s documented default ingest uses RTMP over TCP port 1935 and the /live path. Its broadcasting guide gives the full URL form as rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/<your-stream-key>; many encoders instead take the base address and key in separate fields. See Owncast’s broadcasting guide.
Configure an encoder to send a broadcast to Owncast
1. Find the Owncast server address and key
- Open the Owncast admin interface.
- Go to Configuration > Server Setup > Stream Keys and copy the key you want to use. Owncast can manage multiple keys.
- Use the publicly reachable hostname or IP address of your Owncast server. Its default RTMP base address is
rtmp://<owncast-host>:1935/live.
Keep the key private. Owncast’s first-stream documentation identifies abc123 as an initial default key and admin password and recommends changing both immediately. Do not use or publish those defaults; see Owncast’s first-stream instructions and stream-key settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Enter the custom RTMP destination in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
- Choose the custom service option.
- Set Server to
rtmp://<owncast-host>:1935/live. - Enter the matching Owncast key in the stream-key field, then apply the settings.
- Start streaming in OBS and check the Owncast page to confirm the broadcast is arriving.
The field names and overall custom server/key workflow are documented in Owncast’s OBS and Streamlabs guide. Owncast notes that RTMP-compatible software is generally compatible, but it has not tested every encoder. Match output quality to your server’s capacity and network: higher resolution or bitrate can increase network demand and the server resources needed for conversion.
3. Check network access to Owncast
If the encoder cannot connect, confirm that the Owncast host is reachable and that its firewall or cloud security group permits inbound TCP on port 1935. Owncast’s installation documentation lists port 1935 for RTMP ingest and port 8080 for the web interface; opening the web port does not by itself enable RTMP ingest. See Owncast installation guidance.

Configure a YouTube stream separately
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live.
- Create or select the broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Enter the YouTube URL in the encoder’s server field and the YouTube key in its key field.
- Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live when you are ready to make it public.
Use the credentials for the particular YouTube stream you intend to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find the URL and key.
Send one program to Owncast and YouTube
Configuring an encoder output for Owncast does not also configure YouTube. To broadcast the same program to both, use a multi-output workflow that your chosen encoder or relay service currently supports. Decide between a direct multi-output setup and a third-party relay based on these practical checks:

- Does the encoder support simultaneous outputs in the version you use?
- Can your computer and internet connection sustain the upload required by both destinations?
- Does the chosen route support the protocol required by each destination?
- Does it add a paid-service requirement or another point of failure?
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected with TLS/SSL and recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. Get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room; YouTube notes that the default displayed URL may be ordinary RTMP. Owncast’s cited connection documentation describes RTMP ingest, so do not substitute YouTube’s RTMPS address for Owncast’s endpoint. Configure each destination with its own supported address and credentials. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Owncast also documents a paid Restream route using a custom RTMP destination. That option requires a paid Restream account, and Owncast port 1935 must be publicly reachable. It is one documented route, not a requirement for every dual-output setup. Details are in Owncast’s Restream instructions.

Troubleshoot connection and preview problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder cannot connect to Owncast | Wrong host, path, port, or blocked inbound traffic | Confirm the Owncast host, /live path, port 1935, and firewall or security-group rule for inbound TCP. |
| Encoder connects but the stream is rejected | Key does not match the selected destination | Copy the key from Owncast’s Stream Keys settings for Owncast, or the selected stream in YouTube Live Control Room for YouTube. Do not swap keys between services. |
| YouTube shows a preview but the broadcast is not live | The scheduled stream is awaiting the operator’s start action | After the encoder preview appears in Live Control Room, click Go live when ready. |
| YouTube connection fails after changing protocol | An RTMPS URL may have been entered where an RTMP URL was expected, or vice versa | Use the address supplied in Live Control Room for YouTube. Configure Owncast separately with its documented RTMP endpoint; do not assume the YouTube RTMPS address works for Owncast. |
| Stream is unstable or Owncast struggles with the output | Network capacity or server resources may be insufficient for the selected output | Reduce output demands as needed and verify that both the upload connection and Owncast server can handle the chosen quality. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a pre-recorded YouTube stream that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow from connecting an encoder to Owncast: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video looping in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
