To connect a YouTube channel to Switchboard Live, first enable live streaming on that YouTube channel. Then, in Switchboard on a desktop, open the relevant Stream Group, choose Add Destinations > Connect More > YouTube, authorize the Google account that has access to the channel, and attach the channel to the group. When you are ready to broadcast, send your encoder feed to Switchboard, confirm its preview and green receiving indicator, select the YouTube destination, and press Go Live.
Before connecting: enable YouTube live streaming
YouTube live streaming must be enabled on the channel before Switchboard can authorize it as a destination. Switchboard’s How to Enable Live Streaming on YouTube guide describes verifying the channel by phone and waiting for activation. Switchboard says the process can take up to 24 hours; that is its operational guidance, not a guaranteed YouTube activation deadline. The help article was updated April 24, 2025.
Connect and authorize the channel
- Sign in to Switchboard on a desktop. Open the Stream Group you want to use and click Add Destinations. If you are creating a new group, continue to Connect More during setup.
- Choose YouTube. In the destination connection options, select YouTube.
- Select the right Google account and channel. Choose the account that owns or can access the intended YouTube channel, click Continue, and complete the authorization flow. Close the success screen when it appears. Switchboard’s Connecting YouTube to Switchboard Connect guide notes that multiple channels available through the same Google login can be added by repeating the authorization steps.
- Attach the channel to the Stream Group. Authorization makes the destination available to use; it does not necessarily add it to every group. In the group for this broadcast, select Add Destinations, find the channel, turn on its toggle, and submit the change.
Send the broadcast to YouTube
Connecting the YouTube destination is separate from sending video into Switchboard. Your streaming encoder or compatible streaming application sends the feed to the Switchboard workflow; Switchboard then sends it to the selected destination. Switchboard’s Initial Setup guide describes this Stream Group and encoder workflow.
- Start the encoder feed to Switchboard using the credentials for your Switchboard workflow.
- Check the confidence monitor: the video preview should be visible, and the receiving indicator should be green.
- Select the connected YouTube destination and click Go Live.
Do not treat an authorized channel as proof that video is reaching it. Check the incoming feed in Switchboard before starting the destination broadcast.

Choose the right connection route
| Route | Use it when | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube authorization | You want a reusable channel destination in one or more Stream Groups. | Select YouTube in Switchboard and authorize the Google account with access to the channel; then enable that destination in the group you will use. |
| Custom RTMP | You are setting up a specific scheduled YouTube event using that event’s stream credentials. | Copy the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key from YouTube Studio, then enter them in a Switchboard Custom RTMP destination. |
Set up a scheduled YouTube event with Custom RTMP
- In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy that event’s Stream URL and Stream Key.
- In the relevant Switchboard Stream Group, choose Add Destinations > Connect More > Custom RTMP.
- Enter the Stream URL and Stream Key in their corresponding fields, and give the destination a recognizable name.
- Start the encoder feed to Switchboard, select the RTMP destination, and go live when ready.
This event-specific method is an alternative to authorizing a reusable YouTube channel destination; it is not required for ordinary channel authorization. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not publish it or expose it in screenshots. See Switchboard’s scheduled YouTube Event instructions and Add Destinations overview.
Troubleshoot a missing channel or failed broadcast
- YouTube does not appear in the authorization flow: Confirm live streaming is enabled on the YouTube channel. If you have just completed verification, allow for the activation period Switchboard describes, which can take up to 24 hours.
- The wrong channel appears or gets connected: Check which Google account you selected and whether it has access to the intended channel. Repeat the authorization steps with the correct account or channel selection.
- The channel is connected but unavailable in the broadcast group: Open that Stream Group’s Add Destinations settings, find the channel, turn on its toggle, and submit the change.
- YouTube shows no incoming picture after the encoder starts: Check the two legs separately. First confirm a preview is visible in Switchboard and the receiving indicator is green. Then confirm the YouTube destination is selected and that you pressed Go Live.
These checks address the setup issues covered in Switchboard’s guides; they do not identify a single cause for every authorization or delivery failure.
