Open PowerShell and run ssh username@vps-host-or-ip. Replace username with the Linux account and the host value with the VPS public IP address or DNS name. For a non-default SSH port, add -p; for a private key outside the default location, add -i.

What you need before connecting
An SSH connection succeeds only when four pieces match: a working OpenSSH client on Windows, a reachable VPS address, a valid Linux account, and an SSH server listening on the port you use. Your VPS provider may display the address and port in its control panel or console.

- Windows client: PowerShell must be able to find
ssh.exe. Microsoft’s PowerShell remoting documentation covers PowerShell 6 or later and SSH on the participating computers: PowerShell SSH remoting documentation. - Linux account: Use the account name configured on the VPS, such as a distribution-specific administrator account or a user you created. Do not assume that a hosting-panel email address is a Linux username.
- Address and port: Use the VPS’s current public IPv4/IPv6 address or DNS name. The usual SSH port is 22, but an administrator or provider may expose another port.
- Server readiness: The VPS firewall, provider security group, and
sshdservice must allow the selected port. - Authentication: Have either the account password (if password login is enabled) or the matching private key on your Windows computer.
Keep these values together before troubleshooting: host, port, Linux username, and authentication method. A correct key cannot compensate for the wrong account, and a correct account cannot help if the selected port is blocked. If a provider offers a browser console, use it to confirm the Linux username and inspect the server when network SSH is unavailable.
The basic PowerShell SSH command
Start PowerShell and run:
ssh username@vps-host-or-ip
For example, if the account is admin and the VPS address is 203.0.113.20, the command is:

ssh [email protected]
The command opens an encrypted terminal session to the Linux shell. Once connected, commands run on the VPS, not on Windows. Type exit or press Ctrl+D to close the session.
Use the exact Linux account name before the @. A provider login, billing email, or Windows username is not automatically a Linux account. If the VPS image supplied a default administrator name, use that name unless you have created another account and installed its credentials.
Using a non-default SSH port
Put the port number after -p:
ssh -p 2222 username@vps-host-or-ip
The port must be the one on which the remote SSH service is listening. Changing the number in the command cannot bypass a provider firewall or a server that is not listening there. If you do not know the port, check the provider panel, the administrator’s instructions, and the server’s SSH configuration rather than trying random values.
Selecting a particular private key
Use -i when the required private key is not automatically selected from your default SSH directory:
ssh -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
PowerShell expands $HOME to your Windows home directory. Keep the private key on Windows, protect it, and never upload or send it to the VPS. The server receives only the corresponding public key.
When a key path contains spaces, keep the path in quotes. Use the path to the private file, not the file ending in .pub; the public file is installed on Linux, while the private file proves possession from your Windows computer.
First connection: verify the host key
On the first connection to a host, SSH normally prints the server’s host-key fingerprint and asks whether you want to continue. This is a trust decision, not a routine prompt to dismiss.
- Obtain the fingerprint from the VPS provider’s console or from a trusted administrator through a separate channel.
- Compare that fingerprint with the one PowerShell displays.
- Accept the key only when the values match.
After acceptance, SSH stores the host key in your user known-hosts database and checks it on later connections. If a familiar address suddenly reports that its key has changed, stop. A rebuilt VPS, a changed DNS or IP target, or an interception attempt can all produce that warning. Confirm the new fingerprint out of band before replacing the old entry; do not suppress the warning blindly.
Host-key verification is separate from user authentication. You can have the right password or private key and still need to investigate a host-key warning. Conversely, accepting a host key does not grant access to the Linux account; it only records which server identity you trust for that address.
Logging in with a password
If the VPS allows password authentication, run the normal command and wait for the password prompt:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsssh username@vps-host-or-ip
PowerShell does not display characters while you type the password. Press Enter when finished. A rejected password is not always a bad password, so check the account name and server configuration as well.

- Confirm that you are using the VPS’s SSH port, not a web-console or game-service port.
- Check the VPS firewall and provider security-group rules.
- Ask the administrator to verify that
sshdis running and thatPasswordAuthenticationis enabled. Microsoft’s setup example showsPasswordAuthentication yesas the configuration value when password login is allowed: Microsoft SSH remoting setup.
For routine administration, public-key authentication avoids sending a password at each login and is generally the preferred setup. A server can allow keys, passwords, both, or neither, depending on its SSH configuration and account policy; the client cannot enable a method that the server has disabled.
Using an SSH key from PowerShell
1. Create an Ed25519 key pair
In PowerShell, generate a key pair if you do not already have one:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
When prompted for a file, press Enter to accept the default location or provide a dedicated path. A passphrase protects the private key if the Windows file is copied. The generated files have different roles: the file ending in .pub is public; the file without that suffix is private.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use a separate key when an organization or administrator requires it, and record which key belongs to which VPS account. A descriptive filename can make the later -i option unambiguous.
2. Protect the private key
Leave the private key on the Windows computer that initiates the connection. Do not paste its contents into a ticket, chat message, script repository, or VPS. Only the one-line public-key text from the .pub file belongs on the server.
To display the public key for copying, use:
Get-Content "$HOME.sshid_ed25519.pub"
Windows file permissions should prevent other users from reading the private key. Microsoft’s SSH troubleshooting guidance also discusses Windows ACL handling for private keys. A passphrase adds protection if the file is copied, but it does not make it safe to distribute the private key.
3. Install the public key for the Linux account
Open the VPS provider’s console or use an already-working login, then add the complete public-key line to the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. Keep the key on one line; wrapping shown by a terminal does not mean you should insert line breaks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The key must be installed for the same Linux username you place before the @ in the SSH command. Installing it for root does not authenticate a connection made as gameadmin, for example. If you have several keys, each may occupy its own line in authorized_keys.
4. Fix ownership and permissions on Linux
On the VPS, make sure the account owns its SSH directory and authorized-keys file. A common secure baseline is:
chmod 700 ~/.ssh
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
If another user owns either path, or if the files are writable by other users, the SSH server may ignore the key. Microsoft’s SSH troubleshooting guidance covers creating ~/.ssh, appending the public key, Windows private-key ACL handling, and these Unix permissions: Microsoft VS Code SSH troubleshooting.
Apply the permissions to the account that will log in, not merely to the account used to open the provider console. If you administer the VPS, inspect the SSH server logs after a failed key attempt; they often identify ownership, permission, or authorization-file problems.

5. Connect with the private key
ssh -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
If the key is in the default SSH directory and has the conventional filename, ssh username@vps-host-or-ip may select it automatically. Supplying -i removes ambiguity when you maintain separate keys for different VPS accounts.
You can combine a custom port and key:
ssh -p 2222 -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
The private key may still prompt for its passphrase. That prompt protects the local key and is different from a password prompt generated by the Linux account.
Checking the Windows SSH client
If PowerShell says that ssh is not recognized, the OpenSSH client is missing or its installation directory is not on PATH. Install or enable an OpenSSH client using the Windows features or package-management method appropriate for your Windows version, then open a new PowerShell window and try the command again.
You can confirm command discovery with:
Get-Command ssh
A result that points to ssh.exe confirms that PowerShell can locate the client. This check does not prove that the VPS is reachable; it only separates a local installation problem from a network or server problem. Microsoft’s documented SSH workflow assumes PowerShell 6 or later for PowerShell remoting; a normal ssh.exe Linux-shell session is a separate use of the client.

These are related but different workflows. A normal Linux shell needs only the OpenSSH client on Windows and an SSH service on Linux. The Linux VPS does not need PowerShell installed for that use.
| Use case | Command or API | What must run on the VPS | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interactive Linux shell | ssh user@host |
An SSH server such as sshd |
Running Linux commands, viewing logs, managing a game server, or editing configuration interactively |
| PowerShell remoting over SSH | New-PSSession, Enter-PSSession, or Invoke-Command with SSH parameters |
An SSH subsystem that launches PowerShell, such as Subsystem powershell /usr/bin/pwsh -sshs -NoLogo |
Executing PowerShell commands remotely and using PowerShell session semantics |
Microsoft documents the remoting workflow, including the requirement for PowerShell 6 or later and the remote subsystem configuration, at PowerShell remoting over SSH. Installing that subsystem is unnecessary if your goal is simply to obtain a Linux shell with ssh.exe.
Choose the workflow based on the task: direct SSH is the simplest route for native Linux commands, while remoting is useful when both ends are prepared for PowerShell sessions and you want to use remoting cmdlets. They use the same underlying SSH transport but have different server-side requirements.
Testing reachability before troubleshooting authentication
A timeout or refusal occurs before a username or key can be validated. Test the address and port from PowerShell:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTest-NetConnection -ComputerName vps-host-or-ip -Port 22
Replace 22 with the configured SSH port. A failed test points you toward the address, routing, provider firewall, local network, or server listener rather than toward the password or key.
- Timeout: Packets are not receiving a response. Check the public IP or DNS record, provider firewall/security-group rules, local outbound restrictions, and whether the VPS is powered on with
sshdlistening. - Connection refused: The host is reachable, but nothing is accepting connections on that port, or a firewall is actively rejecting them. Verify the port and the SSH service.
- Connection succeeds but login fails: Network transport is working; investigate the Linux account and authentication settings.
Run this test before changing keys or passwords. It divides the problem into a transport stage and an authentication stage, preventing you from debugging credentials when the SSH port is not reachable.
Server-side SSH setup notes
If you manage the VPS, verify that the Linux host has an OpenSSH client and server package appropriate to its distribution, that the SSH daemon configuration contains the intended authentication options, and that the service is enabled and running. Microsoft’s Linux setup example installs openssh-client and openssh-server, edits /etc/ssh/sshd_config, enables the desired authentication methods, and restarts sshd.service. Use the package and service commands required by your distribution rather than copying commands for a different system.

After changing sshd_config, verify the syntax and keep an existing console session available until a new SSH login succeeds. A typo or an incorrect port can lock out remote access. Confirm that the provider firewall and the Linux firewall both allow the same port, and that the daemon is actually listening on it.
For password access, the server setting commonly discussed is PasswordAuthentication yes. For key access, the account’s authorized_keys, ownership, permissions, and the daemon’s public-key settings all matter. Server policy can intentionally disable password authentication even when a password works through a separate provider browser console.
Diagnosing common SSH errors
“ssh is not recognized”
Install or enable the OpenSSH client, ensure its directory is on PATH, start a new PowerShell window, and run Get-Command ssh. If the command remains unavailable, the problem is local to Windows rather than the VPS.
“Permission denied (publickey,password)”
The server was reached but rejected every offered authentication method. Work through these checks in order:
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the Linux username and SSH port.
- Confirm that the private-key path in
-iis the intended file and that the matching public key is installed. - Check that the public-key line was copied completely into the correct account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keys. - On Linux, verify ownership and the
700/600permissions for~/.sshandauthorized_keys. - Verify that the server’s authentication settings permit the method you are attempting. For password login, check
PasswordAuthentication; for key login, inspect the SSH server configuration and logs if you administer the VPS.
The key is ignored
Run verbose diagnostics while explicitly selecting the key:
ssh -vvv -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip
Look for lines showing which identity files are offered and how the server responds. The output can reveal a misspelled path, a key that was never offered, or a server-side rejection. Do not publish verbose output when it contains usernames, hostnames, or other operational details; share it only with a trusted administrator after removing sensitive information.
The host key changed
Do not fix this by automatically deleting the old known-hosts entry. First compare the newly displayed fingerprint with the provider console or a trusted administrator. If the VPS was rebuilt or its address now points to a different machine, update the known-hosts record only after that identity change is confirmed.
Password works in the provider console but not over SSH
A provider’s browser console can use a separate access path and does not prove that network SSH password login is enabled. Check the account name, selected port, firewall rules, sshd status, and the server’s PasswordAuthentication setting. If policy requires keys, install the public key and connect with -i instead of trying to force password authentication.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →No password prompt appears
If SSH immediately reports a key error, the server may be configured for key-only access, or the client may be offering keys before password authentication. Confirm the account policy with the administrator and use the intended private key explicitly. If the connection never reaches a prompt and instead times out, return to the reachability checks; authentication has not started yet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Useful command patterns after the connection works
Keep the transport and the remote command explicit when automating VPS administration:
ssh -p 2222 -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@vps-host-or-ip "sudo systemctl status sshd"
ssh username@vps-host-or-ip "uname -a"
ssh username@vps-host-or-ip "cd /srv/game-server && ./start-server.sh"
The first form combines a custom port and key. The second runs one command and returns to PowerShell. The third changes to a directory and starts a service script without opening an interactive shell. Quote the remote command so PowerShell passes it as one argument; shell expansion inside that quoted text occurs on Linux, not in your local PowerShell session.

For repeatable workflows, keep hostnames, ports, usernames, and key paths documented per VPS. A wrong account or port can look like a broken key, and a correct key cannot compensate for a blocked port. Test a command interactively before putting it into a scheduled script, and avoid embedding passwords or private-key contents in automation.
Security practices for a VPS connection
- Verify the host fingerprint on first use and whenever SSH reports a change.
- Prefer a separate Ed25519 key for each administrative context instead of copying one private key among people or machines.
- Keep private keys off the VPS and protect the Windows file with a passphrase and appropriate Windows permissions.
- Limit the exposed SSH port through the provider firewall and the Linux firewall to the networks that need it, where your operating policy permits.
- Use the least-privileged Linux account that can perform the task; elevate specific commands when necessary rather than working as
rootcontinuously. - Do not paste passwords or private keys into scripts, chat, or issue trackers.
A concise connection checklist
- Find the VPS public IP or DNS name, Linux username, and SSH port.
- Confirm that PowerShell can locate
ssh.exewithGet-Command ssh. - Test the port with
Test-NetConnectionif the host is not clearly reachable. - Connect using
ssh username@host, adding-pfor a custom port or-ifor a specific key. - Verify the first-use fingerprint through a trusted source before accepting it.
- For key authentication, install only the public key, then check Linux ownership and permissions.
- For persistent errors, separate the failure stage: client discovery, network reachability, host-key trust, or account authentication.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the PowerShell command to SSH into a Linux VPS?
Run ssh username@vps-host-or-ip, replacing the username and host with the Linux account and VPS public address. Add -p port for a non-default port or -i path-to-key for a particular private key.
How do I use an SSH key in PowerShell?
Create one with ssh-keygen -t ed25519, place the one-line public-key contents in the Linux account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, and keep the private key on Windows. Connect with ssh -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" username@host.
Why does SSH say “Permission denied (publickey, password)”?
The server was reached but rejected the offered credentials. Check the Linux username, port, private-key path, complete public-key line, ownership and 700/600 permissions, and the server’s authentication settings.
Why does PowerShell report that ssh is not recognized?
The Windows OpenSSH client is missing or unavailable on PATH. Install or enable the client, open a new PowerShell window, and run Get-Command ssh to confirm that it can be found.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What does a connection timeout or refusal mean?
A timeout usually indicates an address, routing, firewall, security-group, power, or listener problem. A refusal means the host responded but no service is accepting connections on that port, or a firewall rejected it. Test with Test-NetConnection -ComputerName host -Port port before changing credentials.
Should I accept an SSH host-key warning?
Only after comparing the displayed fingerprint with the VPS provider’s console or a trusted administrator. A changed key can result from a rebuild or changed DNS/IP target, but it can also indicate interception. Do not delete the old known-hosts entry blindly.
Does a Linux VPS need PowerShell installed for SSH?
No. A normal Linux shell requires an OpenSSH server such as sshd. PowerShell on the VPS is required only for PowerShell remoting over SSH, which uses an SSH subsystem such as Subsystem powershell /usr/bin/pwsh -sshs -NoLogo.
Why does my VPS password work in the browser console but not in SSH?
The browser console may use a separate access path. Confirm the Linux username, SSH port, provider and Linux firewall rules, sshd status, and whether PasswordAuthentication is enabled. If the server requires keys, install the public key and use -i.

The Bottom Line
Use ssh username@host from PowerShell, adding -p for a custom port and -i for a specific Ed25519 key. Verify the host fingerprint, keep private keys on Windows, and troubleshoot in order: client availability, network reachability, host-key trust, then account authentication.
