To join a Rust server directly, start Rust, press F1 to open the console, select the CONSOLE tab, and enter client.connect IP:port with no spaces around the colon. For example: client.connect 57.128.211.192:28015. Use the server’s game port, not its query or RCON port. If the server is password-protected, enter the password when prompted or use the password syntax supplied by the owner.

What you need before connecting
Direct IP joining requires three pieces of information from the server owner or hosting panel:

- The server’s public IP address or hostname.
- The game port used for player connections.
- The password, if the server is protected.
An address must include the port when you use client.connect. An address such as 57.128.211.192 is incomplete for this command; the client needs the complete form 57.128.211.192:28015. Do not add spaces before or after the colon.
If the owner supplied a hostname instead of a numeric IP, use the same format, such as client.connect example.server.net:28015. The owner-provided address is authoritative because server ports can be changed from their common defaults.

Step-by-step: connect from Rust’s F1 console
1. Open the console
- Launch Rust through Steam.
- Press F1. The key works from the main menu as well as after you have loaded into the game.
- Confirm that the CONSOLE tab is selected. If another tab is active, typed text will not be sent as a console command and the game may show no error.
2. Enter the direct-connect command
Type the following, replacing the example address with the server’s details:
client.connect IP:portFor a server using game port 28015, the finished command looks like this:
client.connect 57.128.211.192:28015Press Enter once. Rust should begin connecting. Keep the address, colon and port together; client.connect 57.128.211.192 : 28015 is not the same syntax.
3. Wait for the connection result
Rust will either begin loading the server or display an error in the console or connection screen. Read the exact message rather than repeatedly sending the command. The message usually tells you whether the address is unreachable, the server is unavailable, or the client cannot complete authentication.
4. Handle a server password
For a password-protected server, the client may ask for the password after the connection starts. Enter it exactly as supplied, including capitalization if the owner uses one.

An alternative command format documented by hosting guides is:
client.connect [IP]:[Port]; password [YourPassword]Replace every bracketed item with the real value; do not type the brackets. Ask the owner which method their server expects if the prompt does not appear.
Which port belongs in the command?
Rust servers can expose several ports, and confusing them is the most common reason an otherwise correct command fails. For a direct console connection, use the game port. The query port is used for discovery by the server browser and Steam favourites, while an RCON port is intended for remote administration.

Common game-port value
Several hosting guides use 28015/UDP as the default game port. Treat that as a common example, not a guarantee. Owners can configure another port, and the connection card or control panel should override any default you find elsewhere.
Why query-port numbers appear to conflict
Published guides do not agree on a universal query-port default. Shattered, citing the Facepunch wiki, describes a default based on the higher of the game or RCON port plus one; in a common setup that produces 28017/UDP. An EU Game Host guide published in 2025 and other hosting references list 27015/UDP or a different offset. These figures describe discovery, not the direct game connection, and they cannot identify the correct port for a particular server.

When you are joining, copy the game port shown by the owner. When you are hosting, check the startup output or control panel instead of assuming a default. One documented explicit configuration is +server.port 28015 +server.queryport 28017; use it only when those are the ports you intend to expose.
What happens if you use the query port?
The server may disappear from the community list when its query port is blocked, yet still accept a direct connection on the game port. Conversely, entering the query port after the IP can send your client to a service that is not listening for game sessions. If an address fails, verify which port the host labels as the game or connection port before changing anything else.
Direct IP join versus the server browser
Choose the method based on the information you have and whether discovery is working.

Direct connection bypasses the discovery step. That is why it can work while a server is missing from the browser. It does not bypass a wrong address, a closed game port, an offline server, or an incompatible client version.

Finding the server IP and port
Ask the owner or read the hosting panel
The server owner can provide the public address, game port and password. Hosting dashboards commonly show these values on a connection card. Copy the game address exactly; do not substitute a query or RCON port simply because it is displayed nearby.

Read the address after you have joined
If you are already connected, press F1 and look shortly after joining for a line formatted like “Connecting: IP:port”. Several hosting guides describe this way to identify an address, but console wording can vary by client build, so treat the owner or control panel as the primary source.
When an address has changed
Restarting or moving a server can change its public IP or assigned port. A previously saved address can therefore fail even when the server is online. Request a fresh connection address before troubleshooting your installation.

F1 does nothing
If pressing F1 does not open the console, close Rust and enable the console launch option in Steam:
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click Rust and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General page.
- Find Launch Options and enter
-console. - Close the Properties window and restart Rust.
After restarting, press F1 again. Remove the launch option later if you no longer need it; the important diagnostic is whether the console opens and accepts input.
The command produces no response
- Look at the tab label: the CONSOLE tab must be active.
- Check that the line begins with
client.connectand that the address contains one colon separating host and port. - Make sure you pressed Enter after typing.
- Paste the address again without quotation marks, brackets or extra spaces.
Typing into another F1 tab can appear to do nothing because that tab is not the command console.

The server is not found or the connection times out
Check the following in order:
- Confirm that the server is currently online. A powered-off or restarting server cannot accept a direct connection.
- Compare every digit of the IP or hostname and game port with the owner’s current listing.
- Verify that you used the game port rather than the query or RCON port.
- Confirm that your Rust client and the server are on compatible versions.
- Check that Steam is reachable and signed in.
- Temporarily investigate whether a firewall or antivirus product is blocking Rust or Steam network traffic, following the security policy of your device and network.
Do not infer that a missing browser listing proves the server is offline. A blocked query port can hide a live server while its game port remains reachable through client.connect.

You can reach the server but cannot authenticate
Re-enter the password exactly as supplied and check for accidental leading or trailing spaces. If the owner recently changed it, obtain the new value. A successful network connection followed by a password rejection points to credentials or server-side access rules rather than the IP syntax.
The command worked before but fails now
Recheck the current address, port and server status. Also check for a client/server version mismatch after a game update. If the owner has changed hosting providers or startup settings, an old bookmark or copied command may point to the previous endpoint.
What server owners must configure
For players to connect directly, the owner must expose and forward the game port over UDP. To make the server discoverable in the browser or Steam favourites, the owner must also expose and forward the configured query port over UDP. The two functions are separate: direct joining needs the game port, while listing and discovery depend on the query port.
- Publish the current public IP or hostname and game port to players.
- Confirm that the game port is forwarded to the machine running the Rust server.
- Forward the query port as well if browser visibility is required.
- Use the startup output or host panel to verify the actual configured ports.
- Check firewall rules on both the host machine and the network gateway.
Because hosting guides disagree about query-port defaults, the owner’s configuration is the only reliable value for a particular installation. Do not tell players to use a query-port number merely because it is common in another guide.

- Rust is running and F1 opens the console.
- The CONSOLE tab is selected.
- You have the current public IP or hostname.
- You are using the game port, not query or RCON.
- The command has no spaces around the colon.
- You pressed Enter after typing it.
- The server is online and your client version is compatible.
- Steam is reachable and local firewall or antivirus rules are not blocking the connection.
- You have the current password if the server requires one.
Examples of correctly formatted commands
These examples show syntax only; replace the values with the address supplied by the server owner.
- Numeric IPv4 address:
client.connect 57.128.211.192:28015 - Hostname:
client.connect example.server.net:28015 - Password supplied in the same console entry:
client.connect 57.128.211.192:28015; password YourPassword
The port in each example is illustrative. If the owner lists another game port, use that value exactly.
